Computer Networks - Detailed Notes

Definition: A computer network is a group of interconnected computers that share resources and

data.

1. Types of Networks:

- LAN (Local Area Network): Covers a small geographic area like a home or office.

- MAN (Metropolitan Area Network): Covers a city-sized area.

- WAN (Wide Area Network): Covers large geographical areas, often connecting multiple cities or

countries.

2. Network Topologies:

- Bus, Star, Ring, Mesh, and Hybrid.

- Each topology has its advantages and disadvantages in terms of cost, performance, and fault

tolerance.

3. OSI Model (7 Layers):

- Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, Application.

- Helps standardize communication functions.

4. Protocols:

- TCP/IP, HTTP, FTP, SMTP, DNS, DHCP.

- Protocols define rules for data transmission.

5. Devices:

- Routers, Switches, Hubs, Modems, Firewalls.

6. Applications:

- Internet browsing, email, video conferencing, cloud storage, online gaming.

7. Security Concepts:

- Encryption, Firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS, Secure Socket Layer (SSL).

Conclusion: Computer networks are fundamental to modern communication, enabling connectivity

and resource sharing across the globe.
