DOWNLOAD AND CONNECT

Getting started with Android Auto™ is easy — simply download the Android Auto app on your Android™ device,
connect to your Mazda vehicle and go!

BASIC REQUIREMENTS
• To use Android Auto, you’ll need an Android phone running 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher
• For best performance, Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or higher is recommended
• You’ll need a high-quality, certified USB cable for the in-vehicle connection
• Your Android device must be paired via Bluetooth® to use Android Auto

• On your compatible Android mobile device, download • Make sure your vehicle is in Park. The parking brake
and install the free Android Auto app from the Google MUST be engaged before getting started with setup

Android Auto™
ACCESS

Once a compatible Android™ device is connected to the USB port and connected via Bluetooth®, Android Auto will launch
automatically. There are also two user-friendly ways to access and get started using Android Auto from the Mazda Connect™
home screen.

CO M M A N D E R CO N T R O L
Once connected, the easiest way to quickly access Android Auto from the Mazda Connect screen is to press and HOLD
the Home button until the Android Auto screen appears.

Once connected, slide the Commander control to the right when on the Mazda Connect home screen and the Android
Auto icon is present.

HOME SCREEN (“APP LAUNCHER”)

Android Auto’s home screen (aka “App Launcher” view) features three distinct sections for information – a sidebar (left), App
Launcher (middle) and an Adaptive Task Bar (right) – displaying the most relevant content in an intuitive layout.

SIDEBAR
1 Home Button Icon
• When the Home button is highlighted, a long press of the Commander control will take you to the Mazda Connect™
menu. Another long press of the Commander control returns to the Android Auto App Launcher view
2 App Icon – Displays the app icon for the app that was most recently used. Selecting this icon opens the app

3 Notification Bell – Allows you to view your recent notifications for text messages and phone calls

4 Google Assistant Microphone – Using the Commander control, select the Google Assistant Microphone to activate
Google Assistant

APP LAUNCHER
5 Most Recent Apps – The first four apps (across the top) are the most recent apps; the first app is the most recent
navigation app used; the second and third apps are the most recent media apps used; the fourth app is the phone app

6 Google Assistant Icon – Indicates that you can select that app for more information (e.g., select the Calendar app and
Google Assistant will read aloud your scheduled appointments for the day)

ADAPTIVE TASK BAR


7 Date and Time – Always displays the current date and time

8 Current App Controls – Provides controls for an app functioning in the background (e.g., when Spotify is active, this
area provides media controls such as Pause and Skip. When Google Maps is active, navigation directions are displayed in
this area)

COMMANDER CONTROL

All Android Auto functions can be performed using Mazda’s multi-function Commander control, which is designed to make
interacting with Android Auto’s features and functions easy and intuitive.

1 SIDEBAR – To access the sidebar, slide the Commander control to the left

2 APP LAUNCHER – The middle of the Android Auto home screen is the default Commander control focus area
• Rotate the Commander control left or right to move up and down through the list of available app tiles
• With an app highlighted, press the Commander control to select it and view additional information
• Slide the Commander control up, down, left or right to access different parts of the home screen (i.e., sidebar, App
Launcher, Adaptive Task Bar)

3 ADAPTIVE TASK BAR – To access additional apps and features, slide the Commander control to the right
• Rotate the Commander control left or right to highlight the desired content, then press down to launch

COMMANDER CONTROL

The shortcut buttons on the Commander control, located right at the driver’s fingertips, give quick access to a variety of
Android Auto™ features.

COMMANDER CONTROL
• Rotate the Commander control to scroll up/down to view all available apps
• Slide the Commander control to the right or left to access the Adaptive Task Bar and the sidebar

HOME BUTTON
• Press and HOLD the Home button to toggle between Android Auto and Mazda Connect™ screens (when a
compatible Android device is connected)
• Press the Home button to quickly return to the Android Auto home screen from inside Android Auto apps

ENTERTAINMENT BUTTON
• When listening to music from an app that is compatible with Android Auto, press the Entertainment button
to pull up the Now Playing screen
• When listening to music via Android Auto, the Entertainment button will open the Now Playing screen, even
while using Mazda Connect

MAP BUTTON
• If you’ve recently used Google Maps™ or another third-party navigation app, press the Map button to
quickly access the map screen or current route guidance
• If a route is set using Android Auto, the Map button will open the Android Auto Maps, even while using
Mazda Connect

BACK BUTTON
• When using a certain feature (e.g., Google Maps), press the Back button to highlight the menu icon in the
left sidebar. Then, press the Commander control down to return to the main menu
• If you are in a submenu of a certain feature (e.g., searching for a destination within Google Maps), press the
Back button to return to the previous screen

VOICE COMMANDS

Google Assistant™ replaces the Mazda Connect™ voice recognition system when a compatible Android™ device is connected
via USB. Google Assistant can be used to access many of your phone’s functions while driving. Use it to enter a destination,
send messages and make calls — all without having to pick up your smartphone.

Say "Ok Google" while on any screen (if the feature is
enabled on your device).

After Google Assistant is activated, the Google Assistant bar will pop
up on your Android Auto screen, and you will be prompted to say a
command. Speak your command clearly.

MAPS AND NAVIGATION

With Android Auto™, you can navigate using Google Maps™ or compatible third-party navigation apps such as Waze™.

• The Google Maps screen automatically launches when an Android device is connected and Android Auto is activated
• To access navigation apps from the App Launcher screen, rotate the Commander control until the desired map/navigation
app is selected, then press the Commander control to launch the app

• Rotate the Commander control to access menu options
• Rotate the Commander control to select and use the toggle (+/-) on the right side of the screen to zoom in and out

MAPS AND NAVIGATION

Navigating to a destination using Android Auto™ is similar to using your Android™ smartphone.

• Press the “Talk” button on the steering wheel to activate Google Assistant, then say, “Navigate to,” followed by your
destination
• You can also use the Commander control to select the microphone icon in the sidebar and activate Google Assistant

S E A R C H I N G F O R A D E S T I N AT I O N
• Press the “Talk” button on the steering wheel or the microphone icon in the sidebar to activate Google Assistant, then ask
Google Assistant to find a nearby point of interest (e.g., “Find a nearby gas station”)
• Rotate the Commander control to select from the list of search results
• You can also highlight and select the search bar on the Google Maps screen to view a list of previous destinations

Note: Android Auto turn-by-turn route guidance is not available on Mazda’s Active Driving Display.

CALLS AND CONTACTS

Making calls with Android Auto™ is as simple as using your smartphone.

PHONE APP OPTIONS

From the App Launcher view, select the Phone icon to access the app and select more options to access including
favorites, call history, contacts, keypad and voicemail.

MAKING CALLS VIA PHONE APP


• With the Phone app open, rotate the Commander control to highlight “Favorites” or “Contacts”
• Rotate the Commander control to highlight a contact and press down on the Commander control to place a call

Note: When an Android device is connected to the USB port, the “Communication” screen in Mazda Connect™ is disabled. All actions, such as making calls and
reviewing contact information, can be completed via Android Auto.

CALLS AND CONTACTS

Hands-free calling via Google Assistant™ helps keep you connected while maintaining focus on the road.

• Press the “Talk” button on the steering wheel or select the microphone icon
in the sidebar and use the Commander control to activate Google Assistant™
• Then, say “Call,” followed by a name from your contacts
• If you have multiple numbers stored for a single contact, Google Assistant will
prompt you to choose the appropriate number for dialing

ANSWERING AND ENDING CALLS


• To answer an incoming call, press the “Talk” button on the steering wheel or rotate the Commander control to highlight
and select the Answer icon on screen
• To end a call, press the “End” button on the steering wheel or rotate the Commander control to highlight and select the
End icon on screen

Note: When an Android device is connected to the USB port, the “Communication” screen in Mazda Connect™ is disabled. All actions, such as making calls and
reviewing contact information, can be completed via Android Auto.

MUSIC AND AUDIO

With Android Auto™, you can access audio entertainment through Google Play™ Music or compatible third-party music
and media apps such as Spotify® and Pandora®.

• Stop on the desired song, artist, album or playlist and press down on the Commander control to play

Press the “Talk” button on the steering wheel to activate Google Assistant™, then
say, “Play,” followed by your desired music choice (e.g., song, title, album name,
artist name).

VOLUME KNOB
• While driving, the Volume knob is the simplest way to skip tracks, adjust the
volume and pause/play an audio track
• While listening to audio, twist the Volume knob to turn the volume up/down
• Slide the Volume knob to the left or right to skip tracks
• Press the Volume knob down to pause/play a track

MESSAGES

While driving, Google Assistant™ will help you send and read text messages and messages from third-party apps (e.g.,
Skype™) without the need to take your eyes off the road.

• All incoming messages are briefly displayed as banner notifications on the Android Auto screen
• Rotate the Commander control and select Play. Google Assistant will begin reading the message
• If you want to preview the message (in text form), select Preview

• An icon will also be displayed next to the new notification bell on the Adaptive Task Bar
• Slide the Commander control left and select the notification bell to see your available messages
• Use the Commander control to select a message and choose to play or preview the message content

MESSAGES

Just like using your Android™ smartphone, keeping in contact is easy with Android Auto™.

SENDING MESSAGES
• Press the “Talk” button on the steering wheel to activate Google Assistant, then
say “Text,” followed by the contact’s name (e.g., “Text Jennifer Parker”)

• You can also use the Commander control to send a message via Google
Assistant. On any Android Auto screen, slide the Commander control to the
left and rotate to select the microphone icon in the sidebar, then say “Text,”
followed by a name from your contacts

• Google Assistant will prompt you to dictate and confirm your message
