World Book Day Assembly
Books vs. Gadgets: The Magical Debate!”
Narrator
Student (technology-loving student)
Grandma (optional; represents wisdom/tradition)
Alice (Alice in Wonderland)
Harry Potter (Harry Potter series)
Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock Holmes)
Matilda (Matilda by Roald Dahl)
[Scene opens in a bedroom or library corner. Student is scrolling on a phone. Grandma watches,
shaking her head.]
Narrator:
It’s World Book Day. But meet Aryan, a student who thinks phones are way better than boring old books.
Student (scrolling):
Why read when I can just Google stuff? Books are sooo last century. Look! I can play games, watch videos,
and even ask my AI assistant anything!
Grandma:
But dear, books have stories that live forever — magic that gadgets can’t give.
Student:
Magic? Please, Granny. Books can’t even glow in the dark!
Grandma (chuckles):
Alright. But remember — the best magic sometimes hides between the pages.
[Grandma exits. Student picks up a book reluctantly and flips it open.]
Student (muttering):
Let me prove Granny wrong. What magic could possibly be in here?
[Suddenly, sound effect! Alice pops out from behind a bookshelf or curtain.]
Alice:
Oh! Another strange world. But this one has… Wi-Fi?
Student (shocked):
What the—Wait… You’re Alice? As in, Wonderland Alice?
Alice (grinning):
Of course! I fell down a rabbit hole, then through a few pages… and here I am.
Student (still stunned):
But… you're from a book. How…?
Alice:
Books are portals, silly! You think only apps can transport you?
[Harry Potter appears with a magical flash.]
Harry:
Blimey! This isn’t the Forbidden Forest… but I smell… Muggle confusion.
Student:
H-Harry Potter?!
Harry (laughs):
You don’t need a screen to experience magic. Just turn a page.
Alice:
Books don't need charging, passwords, or Wi-Fi.
[Sherlock Holmes enters, polishing his magnifying glass.]
Sherlock:
Hmm. Another curious case. A boy who thinks phones are more magical than books?
Student:
I mean… they can do everything!
Sherlock:
Really? Can they make you imagine? Feel? Solve? Grow?
[Matilda enters quietly, holding a book.]
Matilda:
Books made me powerful. They gave me strength when no one else did.
Student (pausing, genuinely curious):
But… phones are easy. Quick.
Matilda:
Books are slow… but deep. They don’t rush. They stay with you.
Alice:
Would you rather play a game... or become part of an adventure?
Harry:
Would you rather scroll endlessly… or fly on a broomstick?
Sherlock:
Would you rather watch a mystery unfold… or solve it yourself?
Student (thinking):
I never thought of it like that.
Matilda:
Books make your brain glow brighter than any screen.
Alice:
And they never run out of battery.
Narrator (smiling):
And just like that, Aryan realized… gadgets can entertain, but books? Books transform you.
[Student picks up a book eagerly now.]
Student:
Alright, I’m ready. Time to unlock some real magic.

Stories come the gadget way.
Books are slow, they make me yawn,
But my phone is never gone!

Of course! Didn’t anyone tell you? Books are portals. Like magic rabbit holes!

🎵 Song 2: "Books Have Magic Too" (All Characters)
(To the tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know It”)
🎶
If you open up a book, you’ll start to fly — (flap arms)
To a land of magic far beyond the sky. — (point up)
From the wizarding halls,
To the Wonderland calls,
Books are dreams you simply cannot buy! — (clap clap)
🎶
[Sherlock Holmes enters, inspecting the room.]
Sherlock:
Hmm… subject has been hypnotized… by screens. Case solved: He’s forgotten the joy of words!
Student (slowly getting curious):
But… books can’t show me videos or give me games…
Matilda enters quietly, holding a glowing book. She speaks softly but confidently.
Matilda:
They give you something better — power. Imagination. Peace.
🎬 Scene 3: The Realization
Student (slowly smiling):
So you're telling me… a book can be more powerful than all this?
Alice:
You’re not just watching — you're inside the story.
Harry:
You’re the hero. The explorer. The wizard.
Sherlock:
The detective. The thinker. The seeker of truth.
Matilda:
The quiet reader… who changes everything.
[Music starts softly: uplifting tune]
