CCS373 VISUAL EFFECTS

UNIT I ANIMATION BASICS


VFX production pipeline, Principles of animation, Techniques: Keyframe, kinematics, Full
animation, limited animation, Rotoscoping, stop motion, object animation, pixilation, rigging,
shape keys, motion paths.
VFX production pipeline,:
 The visual effects pipeline refers to the various stages of post production where
VFX and CGI are required in a film or television series. The pipeline helps to
organize each department so that VFX artists know their role, and a production can
move along within the allocated timeline.

The pipeline consists of several stages:


I.Pre-Production:
The visual effect workflow in pre-production is planning-related, which helps keep crews
informed while preparing for any technical requirements or potential execution issues. VFX
artists in the planning stage can download VFX shot list templates to save time when
planning which shots and scenes need visual effects.
1. Research & Development (R&D)
 R&D on a video project primarily involves Technical Directors (TDs) who work with
VFX supervisors to plan the technical approach and determine which shots and effects
are technically feasible. Extremely VFX-heavy projects may also involve outside
scientists, engineers, or mathematicians for further guidance.
 TDs must ensure that all software and files used throughout the VFX pipeline are
compatible and sometimes create custom software and plug-ins to improve VFX
pipeline efficiency.

1. Storyboarding and Animatics


 Storyboarding is where the VFX artist team creates visual representations of all the
actions within the script. Character motions and story settings are analyzed and basic
drawings are created to illustrate the desired framing on a shot-by-shot basis.

3. Pre-Visualization
i. Also known as previs, pre-visualization uses storyboards to create low-poly 3D
models, wireframes, and scene representations to function as stand-ins for the visual
effects to come.
ii. Previs typically takes place alongside other members of the creative team to
determine camera angles, determine shoot locations, and plan complex scenes.
II.Production:

i. This is when the VFX workflow really gets cracking because it’s when most of the
shooting takes place, raw video files are created, and VFX dailies are submitted. But
plenty of VFX tasks can be done in tandem with the production process.

4. 3D Modeling :
I. 3D modeling takes place throughout all three production phases, but in the production
phase, artists transform storyboard art or low-poly 3D models into lifelike
representations. Most 3D modeling is devoted to creating assets such as vehicles or
buildings that either aren’t practical or cost-effective to bring on set, but 3D models
are also used to create characters (to illustrate non-humans or stand in as digital
doubles) and other props.

5. Matte Painting:
Matte painting is one of the oldest VFX techniques in existence and involves creating visual
backgrounds that don’t exist. These days such backgrounds are often created digitally using
LED panels and game engines, often as entire 3D sets for virtual production, or by chroma
keying using a green or blue screen.
6. Reference Photography
Throughout the entire production phase members of the VFX team hang out on set to take
reference photos of actors, scenes, props, and anything else important. These photos are then
used to rig, animate, and add texture to 3D models.
II. Post-Production
 Post-production brings all the elements of a video production together — VFX,
footage, music, and sound — into the finished product. While, as we’ve seen, the
VFX team is busy throughout the production cycle, the VFX post-production
workflow is the busiest phase of the entire process for the VFX team.

7. Rigging and Animating


 Imagine what happens when a puppeteer pulls the strings on a marionette, and you’ve
already got a pretty good idea of what rigging and animating are all about — only at a
digital level. Rigging and animation breathe life into 3D models by building a system
of controls that animators can use to manipulate these objects.

8. FX and Simulation
 FX artists are responsible for creating concepts and scenes that move and react
according to the laws of physics, such as a long shot of a raging battle at sea or in
space — complete with fiery explosions, which in reality can’t exist in space, but
whatever — they look cool. FX artists often work with elements such as fire, smoke,
liquids, and even particles.

9. Motion Tracking/Match Moving


 Motion tracking, also known as match moving, allows VFX artists (in this context,
referred to as matchmove artists) to insert effects into moving scenes and live-action
footage without the entire thing looking bad.
 After all, inserting VFX elements into a static shot is relatively easy, all things
considered — but adding the same elements to a camera move involves many more
variables. That’s why motion tracking accounts for the positioning, orientation, scale,
and how the object moves within the shot, including replicating physical camera
moves using virtual cameras in their motion tracking software.
10. Texturing
 The texturing process is pretty much as it sounds: It adds textures to the surfaces of
3D models. Texture can include anything from surface color to scaly skin on a reptile,
to reflections in water, to a metallic shine or scratches on a car door. This ensures
models look as realistic as possible.
11. Rotoscoping and Masking
 Rotoscoping involves artists drawing around and cutting out objects or characters
from frames in the original footage, to use the cutout images against a different
background or context.
 Rotoscoping has typically been a relatively painful and manual process, especially in
the days before computerized VFX.
12. Lighting and Rendering
 Lighting is typically dealt with once the texture artists have done their thing. It’s the
last element applied before the effect or computer-generated image (CGI) is complete.
Adding and adjusting virtual lighting and shadows to match either static or live-action
computer-generated scenes or characters, like texturing, helps make them look more
realistic while enhancing aspects of the original shot such as color and intensity.

13. Compositing
 Compositing, sometimes called stitching, is the final step of the post-production VFX
workflow. While it is the final step in the VFX roadmap, it is also the most
important because it integrates all the various VFX elements with real-life footage to
create a finalized shot or scene.

Principles Of Animation:

Animation is defined as a series of images rapidly changing to create an illusion of


movement. We replace the previous image with a new image which is a little bit shifted.
Animation Industry is having a huge market nowadays.

Principle of Animation:

There are 12 major principles for an effective and easy to communicate animation.

1. Squash and Stretch:


This principle works over the physical properties that are expected to change in
any process. Ensuring proper squash and stretch makes our animation more
convincing.

For Example: When we drop a ball from height, there is a change in its physical
property. When the ball touches the surface, it bends slightly which should be
depicted in animation properly.

2. Anticipation:
Anticipation works on action.Animation has broadly divided into 3 phases:

1. Preparation phase
2. Movement phase
3. Finish

In Anticipation, we make our audience prepare for action. It helps to make our
animation look more realistic.

For Example: Before hitting the ball through the bat, the actions of batsman
comes under anticipation. This are those actions in which the batsman prepares
for hitting the ball.

2. Arcs:
In Reality, humans and animals move in arcs. Introducing the concept of arcs
will increase the realism. This principle of animation helps us to implement the
realism through projectile motion also.

For Example, The movement of the hand of bowler comes under projectile
motion while doing bowling.

3. Slow in-Slow out:


While performing animation, one should always keep in mind that in reality
object takes time to accelerate and slow down. To make our animation look
realistic, we should always focus on its slow in and slow out proportion.

For Example, It takes time for a vehicle to accelerate when it is started and
similarly when it stops it takes time.

4. Appeal:
Animation should be appealing to the audience and must be easy to understand.
The syntax or font style used should be easily understood and appealing to the
audience. Lack of symmetry and complicated design of character should be
avoided.
5. Timing:

Velocity with which object is moving effects animation a lot. The speed should be handled
with care in case of animation.

For Example, An fast-moving object can show an energetic person while a slow-moving
object can symbolize a lethargic person. The number of frames used in a slowly moving
object is less as compared to the fast-moving object.

1. 3D Effect:
By giving 3D effects we can make our animation more convincing and effective.
In 3D Effect, we convert our object in a 3-dimensional plane i.e., X-Y-Z plane
which improves the realism of the object.

For Example, a square can give a 2D effect but cube can give a 3D effect which
appears more realistic.

2. 8. Exaggeration:
Exaggeration deals with the physical features and emotions. In Animation, we
represent emotions and feeling in exaggerated form to make it more realistic. If
there is more than one element in a scene then it is necessary to make a balance
between various exaggerated elements to avoid conflicts.

3. Stagging:
Stagging is defined as the presentation of the primary idea, mood or action. It
should always be in presentable and easy to manner. The purpose of defining
principle is to avoid unnecessary details and focus on important features only.
The primary idea should always be clear and unambiguous.

4. Secondary Action:
Secondary actions are more important than primary action as they represent the
animation as a whole. Secondary actions support the primary or main idea.

For Example, A person drinking a hot tea, then his facial expressions, movement
of hands, etc comes under the secondary actions.

5. Follow Through:
It refers to the action which continues to move even after the completion of
action. This type of action helps in the generation of more idealistic animations.

For Example: Even after throwing a ball, the movement of hands continues.

6. Overlap:
It deals with the nature in which before ending the first action, the second action
starts.

For Example: Consider a situation when we are drinking Tea from the right hand
and holding a sandwich in the left hand. While drinking a tea, our left-hand start
showing movement towards the mouth which shows the interference of the
second action before the end of the first action.

Animation Techniques

Basic Animation Techniques

Keyframing

 Animation is made of numerous frames; when those frames are showed at a certain
speed; we perceive the individual frames as moving images. Keyframes are the
important frames which contain information of a start/end point of an action.
 A keyframe tells you about two things; first, it tells you what the action of your frame
is at a certain point of time; second, it tells you what time that action occurs.
In AE, you can pretty much keyframe everything from the attributes on layers to effects
control;
In this demonstration, we will show you how to keyframe a still image;
1. Import OnionHead.psd and drag it to a new comp; move your play head to the beginning
and click on the stop watch icon beside Position; now a keyframe has been added.

2. Move the play head to another point on the timeline(where you want the action to end), go
to the composition canvas and drag the onion head away from the original position; now you
will see a dotted line is created. This dotted line indicates the motion path of the onion head.
3. You add more keyframe on the timeline in the same way you just did and do not afraid to
play with the path on the canvas;

4. Also, you can move the keyframe around on the timeline in case you want to adjust the
speed of movement.

Bezier Curve

When you click on the rectangular shape box on the motion path, you will find that a little
handle appear, you can use this handle to adjust Bezier Curve to smoothen out the animation.
Keyframe Assistant

When you have an object constantly moving in the same speed, it is not very exciting or
realistic. There are acceleration and inertia in the real world. Fortunately, AE provides us
with options to simulate all those realistic physical quality( motion blur is one of the great
options).
1. Here we can select a keyframe which marks the begin of the movement and right-click.
Then go to Keyframe Assistant>>Easy Ease Out(speed up)

2. Next we go to the keyframe which marks the end of the movement and set it to Easy Ease
In(slow down)
3. If you find the acceleration is not fast enough you can go to Keyframe Velocity and
increase the Influence value to make it speed even more.

4. Once you change the velocity you find your keyframe turn from a diamond shape to a
hourglass shape; you can also apply Easy Ease to the middle frame to achieve the same
effects since Easy Ease slow down as the object approaching and speed up as it moving
away.

Keyframe Interpolation

Keyframe Interpolation allows you to change the types of motion path;


If you set the keyframe Interpolation to Linear, you will find the path will be made of straight
lines and sharpe corners.

Graphic Editor

Graphic Edistor is also a very good way to adjust your keyframing;


1. Click on chart icon at the right corner of the layer panel to activate graphic editor;

2. In the timeline, you will see the motion/speed being represented in Bezier Curve;
Time Remapping

Time Remapping is a very popular technique in music video; it allows you to control the
playback speed and direction(move forward/rewind) of your animation;
In this demostration we will be using walking.mov
1. Import the mov and drag it to a new comp; right-click on the walking.mov layer, go to
Time>>Enable Time Remapping

2. Turn on the graphic editor;

3. Next, move your playhead around the timeline and insert a few keyframes; then you can
adjust the curve shape to control the time remapping;
Uprising curve line represents moving forward in time.
Descending curve line represents moving backward in time.
Sequencing Layers

Sequencing is a function that AE automatically spreading multple footages along the


timeline;
1. Drag the JumpingDog comp to a new comp and duplicate the layers several times; now we
can see all the dog are jumping at the same time; what if we want everytime only one dog is
jumping; we can achieve that through sequencing.

2. Select all the layer, then go to Keyframe Assistant >> Sequencing Layers

3. Click on overlap and set duration to 5 frames;

4. Now AE has arranged all the layer accordingly on the timeline;


5. Here you can see one dog appearing as another appearing;

Parenting Elements

Parenting is when you have a sequence of layers, you can have one master layer moving and
the other layer will follow; this is very useful if you are animating a person walking, you can
have the limbs moving and parent them to the body layer, then if you want to move your
character around, you do not have to animate every single limb.
1. To activate the parent option, right-click on the column of layer panel and select
Columns>>Parent;
2. Now you have the parent column; you can use the drop down menu to select which layer
you want the current layer to parent to.

Applying Effects

Applying effects to your layer is exactly the same as applying presets to your text, just go to
Effects&Presets panel, select an effects and drag to your layer; then the effect will be applied.
1. when I type "trans" into the search box, you can see all the effects which contain the letters
of "trans" are filtered out, so if you ever want to find a specific effect for your animation; you
can try to type in a word in the search box; it might get you to the effects much faster than
looking through lists of effects one by one.
2. Here we drag Transform effects to the text layer;

3. Go to layer panel and you will see that an "effects" option has been added into the layer properties. Finally you

can animate the level of the effects using keyframing.


KINEMATICS:

What is Kinematics?

o Kinematics is the study of motion in its simplest form.


Kinematics is a branch of mathematics that deals with
the motion of any object. The study of moving objects
and their interactions is known as kinematics.
Kinematics is also a branch of classical mechanics that
describes and explains the motion of points, objects,
and systems of bodies.

The kinematic formulas are a collection of equations that


connect the five kinematic variables: Displacement , time
interval (t), Initial Velocity (v 0), Final Velocity (v), Constant
Acceleration (a).

The kinematic formulas are only accurate if the acceleration


remains constant across the time frame in question; we must be
careful not to apply them when the acceleration changes. The
kinematic formulas also imply that all variables correspond to the
same direction: horizontal , vertical , and so on.

Kinematic Formulas

The kinematics formulas deal with displacement, velocity, time,


and acceleration. In addition, the following are the four kinematic
formulas:

Note that, One of the five kinematic variables in each kinematic


formula is missing.
Derivation of Kinematic Formulas

Here is the derivation of the four kinematics formula mentioned


above:
Derivation of First Kinematic Formula
We have,
Acceleration = Velocity / Time
or
a = Δv / Δt
We can now use the definition of velocity change v-v 0 to replace Δv.
a = (v-v0)/ Δt
v = v0 + aΔt
This becomes the first kinematic formula if we agree to just use t
for Δt.

Derivation of Second Kinematic Formula


The displacement Δx can be found under any velocity graph. The
object’s displacement Δx will be represented by the region beneath
this velocity graph.
Δx is a total area, This region can be divided into a blue rectangle
and a red triangle for ease of use.
The blue rectangle’s area is v 0t since its height is v0 and its width is
t. And The red triangle area is

since its base is t and its height is v-v 0.


The sum of the areas of the blue rectangle and the red triangle will
be the entire area,
Finally, to obtain the second kinematic formula,

Derivation of Third Kinematic Formula


From Second Kinematic Formula,

Full animation, limited animation:

Limited animation:

 Limited animation makes use of special techniques to limit


the effort involved in producing the full animation so that not
every frame has to be drawn individually.
 When producing anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours of
animated film at 12-24 (or even 36!) frames per second , that
can stack up to thousands or even millions of individual
drawings. Even with a full animation team in a large-scale
production company, this can be almost impossibly labor-
intensive.

 So animators will make use of limited animation techniques,


which involve reusing all or parts of existing animated frames
while drawing new frames only when necessary.
Examples of Limited Animation

One of the easiest examples of limited animation is reusing


walk cycles. If your character is walking toward something
and you've created a standard 8-frame walk cycle, there's no
need to redraw the walk cycle for every step.

Instead just replay the same walk cycle over and over again,
either changing the position of the character or the
background to show movement progressing across the
screen.

Another example

Is when characters are speaking, but not moving any of the


other visible parts of their bodies. Instead of redrawing the
entire frame, animators will use one cel with the base body,
and another with the mouth or even the entire face animated
on top of it so that it blends in seamlessly with the layered
cels. They may just change the mouth movements or may
change the facial expression or even the entire head. This
can count for things like arms swinging on static bodies,
machine parts, etc.—anything where only part of the object is
moving. What matters most is that it blends in seamlessly.

Stock Footage

1.Some animated shows make use of stock footage—animated


sequences that are reused in almost every episode, generally
for some hallmark moment that's a key part of the show. At
times footage will also be reused in mirror image, or with various
changes in zoom and pan to just use part of the animated
sequence but with enough of a variation to make it seem
unique.

2.Flash, in particular, makes limited animation techniques


extremely simple and commonplace, often reusing base
character shapes and animation sequences even without the
extensive use of tweens to substitute for frame by frame
animation. Other programs such as Toon Boom Studio and
DigiCel Flipbook also enhance this process and make it easy to
recycle footage and character art.

Rotoscoping:
Definition

An animation technique where animators trace over motion picture footage


frame by frame.

Origin

Developed by Austrian-American animator Max Fleischer, originally done by


projecting live-action movie images onto a glass panel and traced onto paper.

Modern Method

 Initially done using the rotoscope device, the technique has evolved with
technology and is now performed using computers.
Rotoscoping is an animation technique where animators trace over motion
picture footage frame by frame to create realistic action. Initially, live-
action images were traced onto paper using a device called a rotoscope,
invented by Max Fleischer. Although computers have replaced the original
equipment, the process is still referred to as rotoscoping. This technique is
commonly used in the visual effects industry to manually create mattes
for elements in live-action scenes, providing a high level of accuracy
compared to Chroma keying. Rotoscoping is particularly useful when
subjects are not in front of a green or blue screen or for specific practical
reasons
Rotoscoping has been a valuable tool for visual effects in movies, aiding in creating
silhouettes (mattes) that allow objects to be extracted from scenes. While blue- and green-
screen techniques have simplified layering subjects, rotoscoping remains essential for visual
effects production. In the digital realm, motion-tracking and onion-skinning software
enhance the rotoscoping process, often used in preparing garbage mattes for other matte-
pulling procedures. Additionally, rotoscoping can be employed to generate special visual
effects guided by the matte or rotoscoped line.

Some examples of movies that use rotoscoping include:

 "The Case of Hana & Alice" (2015), an anime film entirely animated with
rotoscoping and well-received by critics

 "Undone" (2019–), an Amazon Prime original series created using


rotoscoping
The Spine of Night" (2021), a feature-length fantasy film directed by Philip
Gelatt and Morgan Galen King that was rotoscope animated

These examples showcase the diverse application of rotoscoping in both films


and series, highlighting its continued relevance in modern visual storytelling.

There are several software options commonly used for rotoscoping:

1. Adobe After Effects: This is a widely used software for creating motion
graphics in films, videos, and DVDs. It offers a range of features for re-
creating motion images and smooth transitions, with the ability to import
from Photoshop. You can try Adobe After Effects CS3 for free with a 7-day
trial version.
2. Nuke by Foundry: Nuke is a widely used software for television and film
post-production, including rotoscoping. It offers user-friendly editing and
customization options and is compatible with Windows OS
.3.Fusion 360: Regarded as one of the most effective software for
rotoscoping, Fusion 360 boasts over three decades of experience in the
VFX software industry. It comes packed with over 40 exceptional new
features as Delta Keyer, camera tracking, planar tracking, and GPU
acceleration
4.Blender: This is an open-source and free 3D VFX software that offers a
comprehensive set of tools for animation, modeling, rendering, video
editing, and more. It is widely used for creating 3D animations, video
games, interactive applications, and even 3D printed models
5.Mocha Pro: This is a professional visual effects and post-production
plugin by Boris FX. It offers sophisticated rotoscoping tools like planar
tracking and seamless integration with popular video editing software like
DaVinci Resolve, After Effects, Premiere Pro, and Vegas Pro.

6.Silhouette FX: This is a free rotoscoping software that is equipped


with useful features like variable per-point edge softening and magnetic
reshaping. It allows you to create attractive masks using Bézier, B-Spline,
X-Spline, or Magnetic Freehand shapes
These software options provide a range of features and capabilities for
rotoscoping, allowing you to bring your 3D animation projects to life and
create stunning visual effects.

STOP MOTION:
Definition

A filmmaking technique where objects are physically manipulated in small


increments and photographed frame-by-frame to appear as if they are moving
independently when played back.

Common Materials

Typically involves the use of puppets with movable joints (puppet animation),
plasticine figures (clay animation or claymation), or models and clay figures built
around an armature (model animation).

Other Forms

 Stop motion can also employ live actors (known as pixilation) or use flat materials
like paper, fabrics, or photographs (referred to as cutout animation).
 Stop motion is an animated filmmaking technique in which objects are physically
manipulated in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating
the illusion of movement when the frames are played in sequence.
 This technique can be applied to various objects, including puppets, models, clay
figures, flat materials like paper or fabrics, and even live actors Stop motion is often
spelled with a hyphen as "stop-motion"
 The technique has been used in films such as "The Nightmare Before Christmas,"
"Coraline," and "Kubo and the Two Strings," as well as in TV shows and
commercials Stop motion is appreciated for its ability to accurately display real-life
textures, which can be challenging to replicate with computer-generated imagery
(CGI)
 Stop motion can be created using software like Stop Motion Studio, which allows
users to capture frames, edit animations, add sound effects and music, and export the
final product as a movie, animated GIF, or printable flipbook
 Stop motion animation has a rich history, with early examples dating back to the late 19th
century, such as "The Humpty Dumpty Circus" (1898) and "Hôtel électrique" (1908)
 The technique gained popularity in the 20th century, with notable animators like
Lotte Reiniger, who created more than 70 silhouette animation films retelling old folk
tales

OBJECT ANIMATION:


Object animation refers to the process of animating inanimate
objects to make them appear as though they are moving and
behaving as if they were alive. This type of animation can be
achieved through various techniques, including traditional hand-
drawn animation, stop motion animation, computer-generated
imagery (CGI), and even a combination of these methods.

1. Traditional Hand-Drawn Animation: This involves drawing each


frame of the animation by hand. This method requires considerable
skill and time but can produce beautifully fluid and expressive
movements.
2. Stop Motion Animation: Stop motion animation involves
physically manipulating real-world objects, capturing them one
frame at a time, and then playing them back in sequence to create
the illusion of movement. This can be done with puppets, clay
figures (claymation), or everyday objects.
3. Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI): CGI allows animators to
create and manipulate objects entirely in a digital environment.
Objects can be modeled, textured, and animated using specialized
software, providing a high level of control over the movement and
appearance of the objects.
4. Motion Graphics: Motion graphics involve animating graphical
elements such as shapes, text, and images to convey information or
create visual effects. This type of animation is often used in video
production, advertising, and user interface design.

 Object animation can be used in various contexts, including film,


television, video games, advertising, and educational materials. It
requires a combination of creativity, technical skill, and attention to
detail to bring objects to life convincingly.

PIXILATION:

o Pixilation is a stop motion technique where live actors are used frame-by-
frame in an animated film, creating a unique and comical effect. This
technique involves actors posing while one or more frames are taken,
resulting in jerky and surreal movement

cameras. Historically, this was the most common way of doing motion capture. Large studios
commonly use this type as it's the most accurate, yielding the impressive photorealistic
tracking required for feature films. However, it can be resource-hungry and isn’t suitable to
run on entry-level systems.

Optical-Active: LED suit markers & cameras

Light-emitting LED markets are placed on actors the same way as optical-passive tracking,
and special cameras record their movement. This isn’t used often anymore as the actors also
need to carry some kind of charger or battery case, and the LED light can potentially spill
into other filmed elements.

Video (Markerless): A sophisticated camera stage is used

Actors do not use suit markers of any kind. Instead, the acting area is covered by a grid on the
floor and a network of cameras that shoot the scene from every possible angle. The recorded
footage is analyzed by software and translated into motion data that animation software can
read. However, the end result takes more time and includes more errors than other methods,
meaning that a lot of data cleanup is needed in post-production. This type of motion capture
is useful for large-scale productions that have post-production budgets. It captures the scene
from every angle, reducing the need for retakes.

Inertial (Cameraless): Motion sensor suit

Unlike the other types, Inertial requires no cameras to capture the motion. Instead, inertial
sensors (IMUs) are placed within a bodysuit and worn by the actor. The motion data is
transmitted wirelessly to a nearby device. The gyroscopic motion sensors record the angle,
position, and momentum of your body and accurately transcribe it into animated

The benefits of using motion capture
There are three core benefits to using motion capture in your production

1. VFX costs and animation timelines are significantly reduced

Typically, 3D animators place keyframes for every major movement. Then, they adjust every
frame with micro-movements. Sometimes repeating this process hundreds of times for each
limb. Considering there are at least 24 frames per second, many productions quickly go over
budget and miss deadlines due to animation. Using motion capture, the bulk of animation
work is completed with the live-action actor's movements.

2. Facial animation becomes way easier

Accurate facial animation is known to be one of the most challenging tasks - especially if

1. Decide on a type of motion capture

As you learned earlier in this article, there are four main types of motion capture. However,
two types currently dominate the market; Optical-Passive and Inertial. We recommend that
you only consider Optical Passive for larger projects with bigger budgets. It requires a
bodysuit, software, and cameras capable of infrared capture. For all other purposes, the
Inertial type is best suited. Intertial mocap can be captured in any location with any props as
long as you have Wi-Fi access.

2. Decide on a system & software

Most motion capture systems provide their own propriety software built to perform optimally

Motion capture software isn't always what your animators will work in. Many studios operate

While motion capture data can be exceptionally accurate, it's not immune to errors. And that

and refine the animation.

Rotoscoping is an animation technique that consists of drawing or tracing
over a photo or live-action footage frame by frame to create more
accurate and smoother animations. The result is having the live-action
footage as a reference to produce realistic movements in the animation.
Rotoscoping was used for intricate dance movements, walking, running,
jumping, and other smooth motions, such as facial expressions that were
difÏcult to replicate in the hand-drawing animation process.

Instead of drawing by hand, animators projected the reference live-action


footage onto glass panels and traced over the image frame by frame. It
was a tedious and time-consuming process, but it was faster than drawing
frame by frame, resulting in more realistic animations, enhanced artistic
style, and more emphasis on a dramatic scene.

Today, most rotoscoping is done digitally as a special effect on live-action


footage to create an animated film version or as a visual effect to
composite the footage on a different background. Before diving into digital
rotoscoping, let’s take a look at the history of rotoscoping.

The History of Rotoscoping:

Rotoscoping originated in 1915 when animator Max Fleischer created the

rotoscoping technique to produce his Out of the Inkwell series. Fleischer wanted

to create a realistic animation where cartoons moved and looked more like real

people; therefore, he decided to film his brother Dave dressed as a clown to


breathe life into his cartoon character Koko the Clown, the first rotoscoped

cartoon character.

From that moment, Fleischer and his rotoscoping technique revolutionized


the film animation industry, bringing other iconic cartoon characters such
as Betty Boop, Popeye, and Superman to the screen.

Back then, everyone wanted to try this new technique for their
animations. When the Fleischer Process patent expired, other studios
could use the rotoscope process. The first full-length animated feature
films using rotoscoping were Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
(1937) and Gulliver's Travels (1939) by Fleischer Studios.

Rotoscoping became popular and mainly stayed the same until the mid-
90s when a computer scientist veteran, Bob Sabiston, developed the
interpolated rotoscoping process and created Rotoshop, an advanced
computer software for hand-tracing frame-by-frame over layers of frames.
Rotoshop allowed shifting the rotoscoping technique to a computer,
though as of today, it’s a technique only the company Flat Black Films can
use.

Director Richard Linklater was the first filmmaker to use digital


rotoscoping to make a live-action full-feature film. Linklater's full-length

The best option is to first record players to capture their actions to


make it more realistic as if you were creating motion picture
footage. Then, using a movie projector, play the movie through
glass or use a lightbox to trace over the footage.

Filmmakers have used rotoscoping in various ways. Walt Disney
used reference films to define a character's movement from a live
movie reference and animate Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs accordingly. Having a reference film allowed Disney to reuse
many of their motion scenes: you can find the same motion in many
Disney films, like the dancing scene from Snow White and Robin
Hood, and other rotoscoping movements across movies like The
Jungle Book, Winnie the Pooh, 101 Dalmatians, Pinocchio, The
