Topic:
- learning a foreign language at a young age;
- learning a foreign language early on;
- early language exposure.
Why early language exposure is beneficial? - Duyên
1. Children are naturally less self-conscious.
- Why? Making mistakes is a crucial part of language learning, and building confidence
early on lays the foundation for lifelong fluency.
- [so sánh/ đối lập] Older students are often embarrassed and fear making
mistakes in front of their friends → decline the opportunities to
practice → hinder (slow down) their learning progress.
2. Broaden student’s horizons
- Why? Communicating with people from other countries, reading news, reading
books, watching educational videos, listening to podcasts, and watching movies in
another language.
- Result: open the door for studying abroad, living abroad, or simply landing a well-paid
and prestigious (danh tiếng tốt) job at an international company.
- Nhấn mạnh: fast-changing world → need an open mindset and broad
international worldview to ensure a fulfilling professional life.
Why early language exposure is disadvantageous? - Linh
1. It may confuse and overwhelm students.
- Why? Young students need to learn a variety of skills such as writing, reading, maths,
or soft skills in their mother tongue.
- Therefore? Adding a second language into the school curriculum →
create further pressure for students → low academic performance, or
a negative attitude towards language learning in general.
- Nhấn mạnh: underperforming students → left behind compared to their
peers.
2. It may be more beneficial to start later.
- Why? Older students are more focused, determined, and independent in their studies
+ better at understanding complex grammar rules, and vocabularies in their mother
tongue.
- Therefore? Set the foundation for learning a second language.
- [so sánh/ đối lập] In contrast, young students lack the life experience as well as
maturity to fully grasp nuances (sắc thái của ngôn ngữ) and may even struggle to
communicate in their mother tongue, leading to difficulty in communication
regardless of language.
