Experiment 1: Measurement of Diameter using Vernier Callipers
Experiment 1: Measurement of Diameter using Vernier Callipers
Aim:
To measure the diameter of a small spherical/cylindrical object using Vernier Callipers.
Apparatus Required:
Vernier Callipers, spherical object, scale.
Formula Used:
Least Count (L.C.) = 1 MSD - 1 VSD
Diameter = MSR + (VSD L.C.)
Procedure:
1. Find the least count of Vernier Callipers.
2. Check for zero error and note it.
3. Place the object between the jaws.
4. Take readings at three positions.
5. Use the formula to find total reading.
6. Calculate mean diameter.
Observations:
| MSR | VSDLC | Total |
|-----|--------|-------|
Class 11 Physics Lab Manual (CBSE)
| 2.10 | 0.03 | 2.13 |
| 2.11 | 0.03 | 2.14 |
| 2.09 | 0.04 | 2.13 |
Mean Diameter = (2.13 + 2.14 + 2.13)/3 = 2.13 cm
Result:
Diameter of the given object is 2.13 cm.
Precautions:
- Check zero error.
- Hold object gently.
- Take multiple readings.
- Avoid parallax error.
Experiment 2: Measurement of Diameter using Screw Gauge
Experiment 2: Measurement of Diameter using Screw Gauge
Aim:
To measure the diameter of a given wire using a Screw Gauge.
Apparatus Required:
Screw Gauge, wire.
Class 11 Physics Lab Manual (CBSE)
Formula Used:
Least Count = Pitch / No. of divisions on circular scale
Diameter = Main Scale Reading + (Circular Scale Reading Least Count)
Procedure:
1. Determine the least count of the screw gauge.
2. Check for zero error and correct it.
3. Insert the wire between the studs.
4. Take 3 readings at different points.
5. Apply the formula to calculate diameter.
Observations:
| MSR | CSRLC | Total |
|-----|--------|-------|
| 0.50 | 0.03 | 0.53 |
| 0.50 | 0.02 | 0.52 |
| 0.50 | 0.03 | 0.53 |
Mean Diameter = (0.53 + 0.52 + 0.53)/3 = 0.53 cm
Result:
Diameter of the wire is 0.53 cm.
Precautions:
- Avoid excessive pressure.
Class 11 Physics Lab Manual (CBSE)
- Ensure zero error is checked.
- Take multiple readings.
Experiment 3: Simple Pendulum - Time Period and L-T^2 Graph
Experiment 3: Determination of Time Period using Simple Pendulum
Aim:
To determine the time period of a simple pendulum and plot L-T graph.
Apparatus Required:
Thread, bob, stand, stopwatch, meter scale.
Formula Used:
T = 2(L/g)
Procedure:
1. Set up the pendulum with fixed length.
2. Displace and release the bob slightly.
3. Measure time for 20 oscillations.
4. Calculate time period for one oscillation.
5. Repeat for different lengths and plot L vs T graph.
Observations:
| Length (cm) | Time (20 osc) | T (s) | T (s) |
Class 11 Physics Lab Manual (CBSE)
|-------------|----------------|-------|--------|
| 60 | 34.6 | 1.73 | 2.99 |
| 70 | 37.4 | 1.87 | 3.50 |
| 80 | 40.2 | 2.01 | 4.04 |
Result:
Time period increases with length. The graph of L vs T is a straight line.
Precautions:
- Take exact 20 oscillations.
- Avoid fan or wind.
- Release bob gently.
