This paper carries 100 marks.

Question 1(a):
Question 1: (a)
(Similar or justified design are acceptable)
i) Sample idea: Hand sketches must be clear and labelled properly.

[4 marks - sketch, 1 marks – labelling; 5 marks]

ii) Criteria: (other justified answers are acceptable, 4 points)

 Avoid, if possible, fastening by screws as it is expensive and time-consuming.
 Thus, recommended to design parts that will snap together or be joined together
by a press fit.
 If screws must be used, then unify their types and head shapes.
 Reduce the number of different components in an assembly.
[8 marks]

Question 1: (b)
(Similar or justified design are acceptable)
Sample idea: Hand sketches must be clear and labelled properly.

[6 marks]

Criteria: (other justified answers are acceptable, any 2 points)

 Avoid, if possible, fastening by screws as it is expensive and time-consuming.
 Thus, recommended to design parts that will snap together or be joined together
by a press fit.
 If screws must be used, then unify their types and head shapes.
 Go for modular design; reduce the number of different components in an
assembly.
 Pure-material parts
 Avoid contaminant adhesives

Question 2(a)
Figure Q2 (a) i, Non lean Manufacturing:
 Strain on hand, legs, shoulder or neck
 Component are not visible and difficult to reach
 Repeating the same job
 Waste of time
[5 marks]
Figure Q2 (a) ii, Lean workstation:
 Ergonomic design to avoid discomfort while working
 Easy reach and easy to view components
 Gravitational design
 Wide work area
[5 marks]

Question 2(b)
 Sort: All of the things not needed for the job are removed and only the essentials
are kept.
 Set: Find a place for all of the tools needed for the job. Some examples of ways to
accomplish this are through the use of a peg board or by using tape to outline where
items should be. This ensures you have a place for them and people can notice when
they are not there.

 Shine: Making sure the work area and work tools are always arranged in a proper
manner and kept clean. Tools and the work stations are included in this step. Also,
people should be assigned the responsibility of keeping the area and the tools clean.

 Standardize: This is to ensure the same process you laid out originally is done
exactly the same with everyone. This could mean new procedures, or periodic
reviews of the area. Must always follow without fail.
 Sustain: You have built a good amount of momentum right now, so now is the best
time to move to another area. Just be sure to hold the appointed people responsible
for the cleanliness of the area accountable. This ensures you do not need to micro-
manage the area, and can focus on the next area.
[Each point 2 marks; 10 marks]

Question 2(c)
(other justified answers are acceptable)
Improvement: (any 5 point)
 Minimize transportation/ movement of product and material in the floor
 Reduce process time for inspection
 Plant space saved
 Total manufacturing time saved
 Less scrap
 Low inventory
[10 marks]
