1 Cor 9

The document argues against the OSAS (Once Saved, Always Saved) heresy, asserting that adherents ignore clear biblical teachings that emphasize the necessity of obedience and sanctification for salvation. It cites numerous passages from the book of Matthew to illustrate the consequences of failing to follow God's commandments and warns that salvation, while a free gift, requires a life of faith and obedience. The author contends that misinterpretations of scripture by OSAS proponents lead to a dangerous misunderstanding of salvation and its conditions.

Those who adopt the OSAS heresy will not be convinced by any amount of scripture that

would correct their error. They can’t see what the scripture is clearly saying due to having
been deceived by the heresy.

Take for example these passages taken only from Matthew among hundreds of examples
that could be cited … They will simply say things like “They weren’t born again” or “They
only seemed to be saved” or “That doesn’t apply to Christians” or “The will of the Father is
to ONLY believe” (while forgetting that the NT teaches clearly that the will of the Father is
ALSO that his people be entirely sanctified and separate from sin) etc. etc.

Matthew 5:22 KJV

But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in
danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of
the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Matthew 5:29-30 KJV

And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee
that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
[30] And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for
thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into
hell.

Matthew 6:15 KJV

But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Matthew 7:19 KJV

Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

Matthew 7:21-23 KJV

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he
that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. [22] Many will say to me in that day,
Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? And
in thy name done many wonderful works? [23] And then will I profess unto them, I never
knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Matthew 10:33 KJV

But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in
heaven.

Matthew 10:38-39 KJV

And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. [39] He that
findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Matthew 12:36-37 KJV

But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account
thereof in the day of judgment. [37] For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy
words thou shalt be condemned.

Matthew 13:20-22 KJV

But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and
anon with joy receiveth it; [21] Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for
when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. [22]
He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of
this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

Matthew 16:25-27 KJV

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall
find it. [26] For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own
soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? [27] For the Son of man shall come
in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to
his works.

Matthew 18:8-9 KJV

Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is
better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to
be cast into everlasting fire. [9] And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from
thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be
cast into hell fire.

Matthew 18:32-35 KJV

Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave
thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: [33] Shouldest not thou also have had
compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? [34] And his lord was wroth,
and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. [35] So
likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every
one his brother their trespasses.

Matthew 22:12-14 KJV

And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment?
And he was speechless. [13] Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and
take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of
teeth. [14] For many are called, but few are chosen.

Matthew 24:10-13 KJV

And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
[11] And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. [12] And because iniquity
shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. [13] But he that shall endure unto the end,
the same shall be saved.

Matthew 24:45-51 KJV

Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household,
to give them meat in due season? [46] Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he
cometh shall find so doing. [47] Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all
his goods. [48] But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his
coming; [49] And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the
drunken; [50] The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and
in an hour that he is not aware of, [51] And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his
portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 25:1-3,10-12 KJV

Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and
went forth to meet the bridegroom. [2] And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. [3]
They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: [10] And while they went
to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage:
and the door was shut. [11] Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open
to us. [12] But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

Matthew 25:28-30 KJV

Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. [29] For unto
every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not
shall be taken away even that which he hath. [30] And cast ye the unprofitable servant into
outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 25:41-46 KJV

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into
everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: [42] For I was an hungred, and ye
gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: [43] I was a stranger, and ye took
me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. [44]
Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a
stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? [45] Then shall he
answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of
these, ye did it not to me. [46] And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the
righteous into life eternal.

Sadly OSAS promoters will undoubtedly have their favorite ways of denying all these
passages.

You can give them 1,000 clear New Testament passages that state or strongly suggest that
OSAS is false but they seem to have trained themselves to deny each and every one.

---------------------------------------------------------

Regarding your properly cited 1 Cor. 9 passage:

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 KJV

Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that
ye may obtain. [25] And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things.
Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. [26] I therefore so run,
not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: [27] But I keep under my body,
and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself
should be a castaway.
The OSAS teacher wants to add the words “…from the ministry” at the end of verse 27 – I’ve
even heard one do that while also claiming “Paul said”, which is particularly disturbing.

The answer that the OSAS fellow gives to 1 Cor. 9:27 is that salvation is a gift, so it can’t be
a crown, because a crown has to be earned. Well he’s right in that salvation is a free gift,
but he’s wrong in implying that it’s ONLY a free gift – salvation is also a battle to the death …
either your flesh wins or the Spirit:

Luke 9:23-25 KJV

And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his
cross daily, and follow me. [24] For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever
will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. [25] For what is a man advantaged, if he
gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

Romans 8:1,12-14 KJV

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not
after the flesh, but after the Spirit. [12] Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh,
to live after the flesh. [13] For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the
Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. [14] For as many as are led by the
Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

So the gift being free does not mean it is without condition, which is what the OSAS people
imply. Salvation being free speaks of it being offered universally to all and provided for
entirely by Christ:

Romans 5:18 KJV

Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so
by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

The offer of the gift of salvation is free and universal, but not all men are saved, because
receiving the gift involves running a valid race course. The valid course is a life that OBEYS
God: Starting with JUSTIFICATION, continuing with SANCTIFICATION, and ending in
GLORIFICATION. This is only achieved by walking in the light; abiding in Jesus. Notice too that
the SANCTIFICATION stage can be quite short, like the thief saved on his cross beside Jesus.

Hebrews 3:12-14 KJV

Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from
the living God. [13] But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be
hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. [14] For we are made partakers of Christ, if we
hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;

The life that obeys God doesn’t itself MERIT salvation, but it RECEIVES salvation on the
merits of Christ’s atoning work which made the free gift available to all people.

Matthew 28:20 KJV

Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with
you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

John 14:21 KJV

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that
loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

James 1:12 KJV

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown
of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

The one that fails to run the race lawfully does not receive a crown.

2 Timothy 2:4-5,11-12 KJV

No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him
who hath chosen him to be a soldier. [5] And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not
crowned, except he strive lawfully. [11] It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we
shall also live with him: [12] If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he
also will deny us:

Which is to say that the one that fails to abide in Jesus the True Vine will be cast into the fire
-- which is of course another contradiction of OSAS:

John 15:1,4-6 KJV

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. [4] Abide in me, and I in you. As the
branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye
abide in me. [5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the
same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. [6] If a man abide not in
me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into
the fire, and they are burned.

None of this contradicts Paul. Indeed, his sound doctrine was according to the wholesome
foundation of Jesus’ doctrine which he did not detract from in any way. (Be careful with so-
called Dispensationalism as it teaches contempt for Jesus’ doctrine … C.I. Scofield was a
great deceiver):

1 Timothy 6:3 KJV

If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our
Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

And Peter warned that many would wrest Paul’s letters to their own destruction (another
contradiction of OSAS):

2 Peter 3:15-16 KJV

And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul
also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; [16] As also in all his
epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood,
which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto
their own destruction.
