A. LESSON PREVIEW/REVIEW
1) Introduction (2 mins)
V-Belting: As is true of the machine elements, Flexible connectors for transmitting power
appear in many different forms: flat belts, V-belts, flat-V, “toothed” belts, ropes (manila, cotton, wire).
It has a factors that effect the capacity of the V-belt are much the same as those previously
described, except the wedging action. As you take a look on FIGURE 17.13 page 455 on our
textbook by Faires is that the results is much larger normal force N for the same belt tension and
therefore a larger tangential (transmitted) force is obtainable for the same coefficient of friction.
F1
By the same token the reasonably attainable tension ratio is greater than for flat belts.

V-BELTING

What is V-belt?
A V-belt is a wedge-shaped belt manufactured out a rubber compound, reinforced with a tensile cord
specifically engineered to transmit power into movement. V-belts can be found in driving mechanisms,
such as engines in air compressors, fans, and pumps.

Section: ____________ Schedule: ________________________________________ Date: ________________

Why is named V-belt?

The name V belt is derived from the belt's shape, which is approximately trapezoidal, like a “V”. Formerly,
flat belts were used, but V belts replaced them for their superior performance. V belts have a wedge type
of shape, and are used in power transmission.
