Number Theory (Divisibility)

The document outlines a derived divisibility rule for 27, stating that a number is divisible by 27 if it is divisible by both 3 and 9, and the result of dividing by 9 is also divisible by 3. It provides a step-by-step method to check for divisibility, along with multiple examples demonstrating the application of the rule. Each example follows the same process to confirm the divisibility of various numbers by 27.

NUMBER THEORY DECEMBER 20, 2024

There isn't a simple, widely known divisibility rule for 27 like there is for 2, 3, 5, etc. The most
straightforward method is to perform the division. However, we can create a rule based on the
divisibility rules for 3 and 9. Divisibility Rule Rule for 27 (Derived Rule):

A number is divisible by 27 if it's divisible by both 3 and 9, and the result of dividing by 9 is
also divisible by 3. This is because 27 = 3 x 3 x 3 = 3 x 9.

STEPS

1. Check for divisibility by 9: If the sum of the digits is divisible by 9, the number is
divisible by 9.

2. Check for divisibility by 3: If the sum of the digits is divisible by 3, the number is
divisible by 3.

3. Divide by 9: If the number passes steps 1 and 2, divide the number by 9.

4. Check the result for divisibility by 3: If the result from step 3 is divisible by 3 (sum of its
digits is divisible by 3, then the original number is divisible by 27.
