Multiplication of a fraction by a fraction

To multiply two fractions, just multiply the numerators to get the numerator of the product,
and multiply the denominators to get the denominator of the product.

Ex 2.3 Practice Question no. 4 & 8

Reciprocal of a fraction:-

The number obtained by interchanging the numerator and denominator of a fraction is known as
the reciprocal of that fraction.

𝟓 𝟕
Ex. Ex.
𝟗 𝟖

𝟓 𝟗 𝟕 𝟖
Thus, reciprocal of is Thus, reciprocal of is
𝟗 𝟓 𝟖 𝟕

Division of fractions:-
Division of whole number by a fraction:-
To divide a whole number by any fraction, multiply that whole number by the reciprocal of that
fraction.
𝟏
Ex-1. 1÷ 𝟐

𝟐
=1x =2
𝟏

𝟏
Ex-2. 3 ÷ 𝟒

𝟒
=3x = 12
𝟏
TLS-MATHEMATICS/VII/Fractions & Decimals/2020-21

Division of a fraction by a whole number:-

A fraction being divided by a whole number is equivalent to the fraction being multiplied by the
reciprocal of the number.

𝟐
Ex. ÷7
𝟑

𝟐 𝟏
= x
𝟑 𝟕

𝟐
= 𝟐𝟏

Division of a fraction by another fraction:-

To divide a fraction by another fraction, multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of another
(second) fraction.

𝟏 𝟔
Ex. ÷𝟓

𝟑 6 𝟏𝟖

Exercise 2.4(NCERT)

1. Find:

(i) 12 ÷ ¾

Solution:-

= 12 × reciprocal of ¾

= 12 × (4/3)

=4×4

= 16

(ii) 14 ÷ (5/6)

Solution:-

= 14 × reciprocal of (5/6)

= 14 × (6/5)
TLS-MATHEMATICS/VII/Fractions & Decimals/2020-21

= 84/5

3. Find:

(iii) (6/13) ÷ 7

Solution:-

We have,

= (6/13) × reciprocal of 7

= (6/13) × (1/7)

= (6 × 1) / (13 × 7)

= 6/91

(iv) ÷3

Solution:-

First, convert the mixed fraction into an improper fraction.

We have,

= 13/3

Then,

= (13/3) × reciprocal of 3

= (13/3) × (1/3)

= (13 × 1) / (3 × 3)

= 13/9

(v) 3 ½ ÷ 4

Solution:-

First, convert the mixed fraction into an improper fraction.

We have,

3 ½ = 7/2
TLS-MATHEMATICS/VII/Fractions & Decimals/2020-21

Then,

= (7/2) × reciprocal of 4

= (7/2) × (1/4)

= (7 × 1) / (2 × 4)

= 7/8

(vi) ÷7

Solution:-

First, convert the mixed fraction into an improper fraction.

= = 31/7

Then,

= (31/7) × reciprocal of 7

= (31/7) × (1/7)

= (31 × 1) / (7 × 7)

= 31/49
