The Outsiders was written by S.E Hinton. This young-adult novel was very popular and it became all time popular novel. The story was talk about two groups of gangs in Oklahama in 60s. Those gangs were Greasers and Socs. The most important thing in the story was friendship between two members in a group of gang called Greasers. PonyBoy Curtis and Johnny Cade were best friend. They were innocent kids in gangs. They just want to be tuff. They became gangs because of their neighborhood with gangs. Unfortunately, to be gangs always faced a lot of trouble. Johnny was became murderer for protected his friend from trouble. Pony was very smart and sensitive. He likes to watch movies and sunsets. He also likes to study and read the book too but he tried to hide it to other people. He had to two older brothers named Darrel Curtis and SodaPop Curtis. Darrels nickname was Darry. Darry is his oldest brother. He was worked too much and gave up his college to become guardian of his brothers after their parents died in car wreck accident. He is smarts, means, strongs and likes to do everything with his physical strength. He always yelled at Pony and it made Pony hated him. Soda is his second older brother. Pony likes him very much. Soda listen to Ponys trouble, tried to understand about Pony and treat Pony like Ponys mother. He is handsome guy like an actor and always happy. He was dropped out from school. The most two important character in the story is Johnny and Pony. These boys were youngest members in Greasers and they were best friend. All Greasers are treat Johnny well as family because Johnny had unhappiness and violent family. His father always beat him and his mother is buzzer. Greasers and Socs are enemy and they were had difference life. Socs were riches, sophisticated, live on the West sides and tried to hide their emotions. For Greasers were poors, live on the West sides, like to put grease on their hair and like show their emotions. The beginning of the problems of Pony and Johnny were started movie theater after Johnny and Pony hang out with Socss girl named Cherry Valance and Macia. Those boys were almost fought each other but Cherry stopped them by go home with Socs. After walked home, Pony didnt want to go home yet, so Johnny and Pony went to parking lot for looked at stars. During looking at the stars, Johnny he said he want to kill himself. He wanted the place that no

Greasers or Socs, only ordinary people. He mean he didnt want to risk his life with gangs, scared of have trouble and got jumped by Socs. Then Pony started to jealous Socs. He thought Socs had everything but for Greasers had nothing. Socs lived in happiness family and rich but for Greaser, they lived in violent family and poorer. During their dialogue, they were felt asleep together in parking lot until 2 oclock morning. Darry were mad about that and he slapped across Pony face when Pony arrived home. Pony had never got slapped before even his parents but Darry did for the first time. Pony was cried and ran away. He returned to find Johnny in Parking lot. Johnny tried to comfort Pony by compare their family. Truly, Ponys family is heaven compare to Johnnys family. After that, they decided to go park for relief. Then Socs came around and looked for a fight for their vengeance. Pony and Johnny tried to escape but Socs were surrounded them. While Pony drowning by Socs, Johnny stabbed one of Socs named Bob. Johnny became murderer because of saving his friend. He cant stand to see Pony got drown. He thought Socs were tried to kill Pony. Pony was stupor and didnt know what he going to do but Johnny was. He tried to find the way to escape. A moment later, he had an idea to find Dally. Dallys real name is Dallas Winston but every one called him Dally. He is an informal leader of Greasers. He had ever been in jail before when he was young. He is the person like to break the rules, does everything illegal and always gets what he wants. Pony and Johnny received a gun, money 50 buck and a plan to go to an old abandoned church on top of Jay Mountain after they found Dally. They didnt take responsibility for their murderer and they tried to escape. They sneak into the train to go to Jay Mountain. After arrived Jay Mountain, they disguise themselves by cut off their hair and bleach Ponys hair. Johnny always had his idea during trouble. On Jay Mountain, Johnny was felt sorry, regret, guilty and wanted to take responsibility for his criminal. He was become a murderer because he tried to protect Pony. He wanted to push Pony out of trouble. He said sarcasm to Pony in order to make Pony get away from him. He is a good person and a good friend for Pony. They play card, read book and smoke cigarette for fun. One day, they got up in the early morning. Then they watched sunrise together. Pony recited a Poem for Johnny about Nothing gold can stay . Pony mean happiness cant be stay with you forever. Something good happen now and something bad might be come after. Just like them, they hung out with girls and watched movie very happily but the same night, Darry slapped Pony and Johnny became murderer.

Dally came to visit and brought them some news for them. He also brought letter from Soda to Pony. Soda told Pony about Darrys regret for slapped Pony. After that, Dally brought them to eat something in town for some excited and relief. During they eating their food, Dally told Johnny and Pony about Two-Bit got jumped in parking lot, Greasers going to have big rumble with Socs and Cherry became spy for them. It made Johnny want to go back to town and confess his crime to police because he dont want Pony separate from his brother. He wanted to take responsibility for his mistake again like on Jay Mountain. Truly, Johnny didnt respond for his mistake but he think about his friend than himself. On other hand, Johnny thought about Cherry going to testify for him crime. He thought his crime was only self-defense. It was shocked Dally. Dally gave them gun and plan. If the police found out that Dally help murderer, he might be sent to jail too. Johnny asked about his parents but it made him sad. His parents didnt even take care of him or ask about something that had been happen to him. When they went back to the abandoned church, they saw church was in the fire. Many kids were still in church. Pony and Johnny were thought about their cigarettes ember is the reason that made that church burn. They ran into church without any other idea than save the kid. In this situation, they were took responsible for their mistake. Even Johnny was an escaped murderer that didnt take responsibility or run away. But in this situation, he became hero that took responsibility for his mistake. If he went to the court to confess his crime, he might be not punish on electric chair. He was a manslaughter that killed other people had good purpose. He had his own reason. Unless Bob had jumped Johnny before and he also drown Pony that almost killed Pony. By the way, he was an underage kid. He might be sent to jail or something better. Between run into burning church and confess his crime, run into burning church is more dangerous than go to confess his crime. Running into burning church was very dangerous because a lot of fire and burning timber can be fall over his body and can be kills him any minutes. May be he didnt want to live in regret life forever or didnt have enough time to think about dangerous too much. In Pony and Johnnys mind had only save kids life. During saving kids life, a burning timber fell over Johnnys back. He might be worse than this if Dally didnt help him. Dally also helped Pony by hit the flame off Ponys back. Dally got burned his hand but he was okay. The person that got badly burned was only Johnny. The timber that fell cross his back had been broke his back. When Pony arrived the hospital, he met his older brothers again and figured about Darrys feeling. Darry was felt sorry about his mistake that slapped across Ponys face. He have

a fear that Pony never knew before. He was fear of losing sibling or relative. He already lost his parents and he became guidance of his brother. He had many things that he had to responds and took care after his parents died. He had to work hard for money to pay for his brothers daily life. He became mean and cold because he had a lot of contemptuous of himself after his parents died. He gave up his college to keep his brother together. He really love his brother because he can sacrifice his future for his brother. Pony, Johnny and Dally became delinquent hero at the day after burned church. Pony and Two-Bit went to visit Johnny and Dally. On the way to hospital, they met Socs and it made Pony scare to dead. Randy came and wanted to have a conversation with Pony. Randy is Macias boyfriend and Bobs best friend. He told Pony about Bob and Socss emotion. After they talked to each other, Pony knew a lot of stuff that he had never known before. Pony started to realize that, Socs also the same as Greaser. They had their own problem, emotion and live in the same world that can see the same sunrise and sunset. Socs and Greasers just different only attitude, behave, clad and money. His conversation between him and Randy became more individual than gangs. He also regarded Randy as an ordinary person. He said that conversation were between two people, not Socs or Greasers. Pony and Two-Bit continued their way to visit Johnny and Dally after conversation with Randy. Johnny was in critical condition and no visitor allowed. However, they could visit Johnny because Johnny asked for them. Johnny told Two-Bit to bring grease for put on his hair. He also told Two-Bit to make a copy of a book named Gone with the Wind . After Two-Bit left, Pony and Johnny talked to each other. Johnny was happy and proud to become hero. He realized about his back was badly hurt. He cant move his back and he knew he is dying. He also told Pony that, he didnt want to die yet because he is too young to die. He was 16 years old kid that grown up on street. He ever said about killed himself because he didnt know about the beautiful of world. His parents had never brought him to see sunrise and sunset even once. He wanted to see more things that he had never seen yet. Many minute later, his mother come and wanted to visit him but he refused it. It might be his mother was a boozer that had never took care of him before. His couldnt control his anger on his mother until he pass out cold. After Johnny pass out cold, Pony and Two-Bit continued their way to visited Dally. Dally was didnt have very much injure. He got burned only his hand. He asked about Johnnys situation but he didnt visit Johnny. May be he didnt want to cry. Then he also asked for TwoBits switchblade for join the rumble. He hated Socs and wanted to win that rumble for Johnny.

He wanted to revenge for his brother and might be wanted to kill Socs with that switchblade. He and Johnny were had the same kind of family but Johnny share experience to other gangs. For Dally, he had never shown it to other gangs. Pony just knew about it on Jay Mountain. Dally had father didnt care about him even if he die. He knew about Johnnys feeling and wanted to look after Johnny and treat Johnny as his own brother. During came back home after visited Dally and Johnny, Pony got concussion and headache very much but he told Two-Bit to keep it secret and especially from Darry. He wanted to join the rumble. On their way back home, Pony and Two-Bit met Cherry Valance. Cherry bring news from Randy for them that, rumble will be fight in Greasers rule and no weapon. Then she had a conversation with Pony. She asked about Johnnys situation but she said she cant visit Johnny because he was the person that killed Bob, her boyfriend. Bob was the person that made trouble with Pony and Johnny. The first reason for Bobs dead was Cherrys fail. She hung out with Pony and Johnny that made Bob angry with Pony and looking for fight. Pony was out of control about Cherrys refused to visit Johnny. He was said with anger to Cherry that he didnt want her charity. It made Cherry sad about that and almost cried. Pony couldnt able to stand and see girl cry, so he comforted her by talk about sunrise and sunset. He told Cherry that she could see beautiful of sunrise from east side and sunset from west side too. Sunrises and sunsets always shine golden light on the sky. Sunrise is beginning of new day and sunset is the end of the day. It always occur everyday. If today is bad day, then wait for tomorrow to have a new day that might be better. After Pony and Two-Bit arrived home, all Greasers include Darry and Soda were prepare themselves to join the rumble. Darry didnt want Pony to join the rumble because Pony was too young and look sick. All Greasers that join the rumble were had their own purpose. Darry was proud about his muscle and want to show it. Soda wanted to fight for fun and Steve wanted to fight for revenge. Two-Bit was fight for conformity. Only Pony didnt have enough good reason to fight. He just knew that he didnt want to stay at home alone and fight for Johnny. Johnny already killed one of Socs. There no more reason to revenge but Pony used that reason to fight for plead. Dally also came to join the rumble. Tim Shepards gangs and Greasers were together in one group. As the result, Greasers won the rumble. Pony got fought badly from Socs. While he was stupor, Dally was dragged him to see Johnny together.

When they arrived hospital, they rushed to visit Johnny. Dally told Johnny that Greasers had won the rumble but Johnnys replied was fighting is no good . Johnny wanted to tell Dally to stop fight. Dally was Johnnys hero. He said he proud of Johnny for the last time before Johnny die. Johnny was very happy and proud because he wanted to hear Dallys admire for a long time. Then Johnny gave Pony his last advice was stay gold . He wanted pony to stay innocent and keep his good way like before. Gold is value and beautiful. Pony was a smart kid that was changed by environment into violent world. If he still innocent and try to study, then he will become pure gold. Johnny died after he gave advice to his two closest buddies. Dally was mad about Johnnys death and he cant take it. He was out of control. Then he ran away. He went to robbed a grocery store and the cops were chased him. He was scared and called all Greasers to help him and meet him at parking lot. When all Greasers arrived parking lot, Dally was there but the cops also there too. Dally was point his unload gun to the cops, so the cops shot him until he die. His gun was always unloaded. He never put bullied on it. He just used it to bluff other people but he didnt want to kill other people. Pony started to realize about Dallys feeling. Johnny was the only thing that Dally had. He regarded Johnny as his only brother or family. His family and Johnnys family didnt have happiness family. He always a tuff guy that very mean and cold become very soft. By the way, he didnt want to go to jail again. His only way is death. Pony knew that, Dally want to die. Only one day, two of Ponys friend died. Johnny was died as a hero but Dally was died as a hoodlum. Johnny was happy and proud to died. Dally was die with fear, lonely, disappoint and guilty. After Dally died, Pony was knocked out by his concussion or his sickness. When Pony wake up, he was on the bed. He stayed on bed for the whole week. He always escaped from the true. He pretended to Johnny and Dally didnt dead. He didnt want to remember everything that happened. After the rest, Pony went to the court with his brother. The judge could separate Pony and Soda from Darry for Pony didnt go to school many days and lived in hood life or violent life. But the judge didnt separate them because Johnny was the one that killed Bob. Pony was a victim and witness. By the way, the doctor was talk something in private and secret with the judge. So the judge didnt ask Pony to be a witness but he asked about some other stuff about his friend, his brother and school

About Ponys school is better than before because he start to make more difference friends. Teachers in his also start to take care of him and give charity on him. On the other hand, Darry also help check Ponys homework. Two-Bit also tell Pony dont try to become gang. He knew that Pony was a smart kid and innocent that try to be tuff. Pony is difference from other Greasers. On Ponys graduate years, he wants to give up his college for help his brothers work. However, he still goes to college after he knows about Darrys responsibility. Darry was given up his college for his responded over his brothers. He could go to college if he left his brother to orphan house. Soda was drop out of school. Only Pony has opportunity to go to college. One day, Pony take the book Gone with the Wind that Johnny left to nurse for him. He started to accept everything that happened. Johnny and Dally were died. He was pretended to while he was sick. When he opened the book, one paper fell out on the floor. It was the letter from Johnny wrote for him before his dead. Johnny was proud when he died. He knew the worth of being a hero. He also told Pony about the poem that Pony recited for him at Jay Mountain. He said youre gold when youre a kid, like green . It mean when you young everything was new when you grow up wiser, you become gold. Johnny also wanted Pony to ask Dally for him to look at sunrise or sunset once. He thought Dally also never seen it too. In the end, he told Pony to be better person and dont try to become gang. After Pony read the letter, he started to realize about himself. He still young and had enough time to make himself better. It was too late to tell Dally and he didnt want to end up like Dally. It didnt mean die but it mean late. He also stop try to be gang and become more individual. He can to make more friends that not gangs. The Outsiders mostly was talk about teenager to be a gang. However, friendship between Johnny and Pony is the most important idea of the story. Friendship if the most important thing that everyone need. Even some friends are bad friend but there still can have good friend. Good friend can change life better. They always help each other, share experience, acknowledge to each other and protect each other. The friendship between these two kids in The Outsiders was very impressive. Because of friendship, Johnny became stronger and more respond. Pony became better guy or gold. He changed his life and idea after many bad things happen. On other hand, Johnny was tried to acknowledge Pony before he die. Pony was listened to his best friends advice and then he change himself into better person.
