The Mysteries of the Pyramids
1 The largest of the 138 pyramids in Egypt is the Great Pyramid of Giza. It is
455 meters tall. It was built from more than two million heavy stones. How did
the Egyptians manage to build such a huge building more than 4,500 years ago?
What secrets did they leave inside? These questions are the mysteries of the
10
pyramids.
2 Scientists are still not sure how the pyramids were built. They believe that at
least 20,000 people worked together for more than 23 years to build the Great
Pyramid of Giza. It is possible that the workers used water and sand to make the
big stones slide1. Other people think the scientists are wrong. They say that the
15
pyramids are so huge that aliens2 built them.
3 The Egyptians put their dead kings in rooms inside the pyramids and filled
these rooms with gold. They believed that the kings could use the gold after their
death. The Egyptians didn't want thieves3 to take the gold, so they built traps4 in
the rooms. They also built more rooms than they needed and made the rooms
20 with the gold harder to find.
4 The Egyptians’ efforts to protect the gold did not stop all the thieves. When
modern scientists opened the pyramids, they found only a very small amount of
gold. They still don’t know if there are more secret rooms that no one explored.
5 Scientists continue to study the pyramids. They find new information and try
to use it to explain how the pyramids were built. They explore the pyramids from
20
the inside and look for more secret rooms. Maybe one day they will be able to
solve all the mysteries. Who knows what they will find in the future?
