PWHT Procedure for Centrifugal Pump Components (ASME-based)
1. Objective
Define the Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) procedure for centrifugal pump welded components in strict
accordance with ASME B31.3 and ASME Section VIII UCS-56 requirements.
2. Applicable Standards
- ASME B31.3: Process Piping PWHT clauses (331.1.1, 331.1.3).
- ASME Section VIII, Div.1 UCS-56: PWHT for pressure vessels.
- ASME Section IX: Welding Procedure Qualification.
3. Material-Specific Requirements (ASME B31.3 Table 331.1.1)
P-Number groups with temperature ranges and soak times:
- P-1/3 (Carbon & low-alloy steels): 595-650 deg C, 1 h per 25 mm (min 1 h), +15 min per 25 mm >50 mm.
- P-4 (Alloy steels): 650-705 deg C, same soak basis.
- SA/SB (High-alloy steels): 675-760 deg C, same soak basis.
- Nickel alloys: 760-800 deg C, same soak basis.
- P-7 (Austenitic SS repairs): 730-775 deg C, same soak basis, cooling <=55 deg C/hr above 650 deg C.
- P-8/10H (Stainless & corrosion-resistant): No PWHT unless WPS requires.
4. Exemptions (ASME B31.3 Table 331.1.3)
- P-1 steels (any thickness) with >=95 deg C preheat and multi-pass welds.
- P-1 steels <19 mm with standard preheat; others as per table.
5. Equipment & Instrumentation
- Heating: Electric-resistance blankets or calibrated furnace.
- Thermocouples: Minimum two per zone; data logger with annual calibration.
- Control: Programmable temperature controller.
6. PWHT Cycle Steps
a. Preparation: Inspect (VT, PT/MT), clean welds, attach thermocouples.
b. Heating: Ramp <=200 deg C/hr (P-1/3), extend band >=4x thickness.
c. Soaking: Hold at temp for 1 h per 25 mm (min 1 h), start when +/-10 deg C setpoint reached.
d. Cooling: Furnace cool to ~300 deg C, then air-cool; no quenching.
7. Acceptance & Documentation
- Time-temperature chart: deviations <=+/-14 deg C during soak.
- Calibration certificates for furnace and recorders.
- Post-PWHT NDE (VT/PT/MT or RT) as per ITP.
- Weld map, heat codes, operator and inspector sign-off.
8. Safety & Quality Controls
- PPE: Insulated gloves, face shields.
- Protect surrounding areas and valves.
- Remove flammable residues before heating.
- No further welding until inspection complete.
