In this short video I’m going to demonstrate how to create a new map using Google maps

and importing some data that I've already downloaded onto my computer. So I’m going to
start by creating a new map by clicking this button here and here's my map. I’m going to give
it a name so I’m going to call it Peru, and then I’m going to save that.

I then need to import my data, so see this button here we see on title layer, under that we
see this import, I’m going to click on that and I’ve already downloaded the data that I want to
use so I’m just going to drag that in off my computer here.

The next step is to decide on the columns of this data that we want to map. We can't map
everything that's in this spreadsheet that I’ve uploaded but I’m really interested in mapping
out the different types of sites the different camps etc that people are living in. So the first
thing we need to do is select the columns that are going to tell us the places on the map so
this one is my latitude and this one here is my longitude. So that gives us the spatial
information that we need on the map and then I’m going to select site type because that's
the data that I want mapped against the places on my map. And I click finish and we see it
thinks about it for a moment and then it's mapped out this data.

We can see all the various different sites built out on this map. I want to distinguish between
the different types of sites so I’m going to click on here and I’m going to select rather than
uniform style I’m going to select site type and we can see now that it's chosen a different
colour scheme here for the different sites. I think I’m going to change that maybe I’ll go blue
with campsites, let's say red for host communities and yellow for the collective centres.
Obviously you can choose whatever you want there and then we can see that we've got this
map
here showing the different types of camps and other types of sites that people are living in.
But obviously if I wanted to look in a little more detail maybe around where there seemed to
be lots of people living here, I can zoom in and see in more detail where people are living.
So that's a simple way of designing a map using google maps and importing your own data
