CALCULATION SHEET

Subject :- Design of Splice Connections Date :- 22-Nov-24

CONN.TYPE :- FLANGE WELDED / WEB BOLTED SPLICE DETAILS

DESCRIP OF CONN :- Full strength splice detail for BUP500

LOC OF CONN :- Wherever Applicable

REF.DRWGS :-

SECTION PROPERTIES :-

D s = Depth of section = 500 MM

W s = Width of Section = 300 MM
T w = Thks of Web = 25 MM
T f = Thks of flange = 32 MM
d s = Depth bet fillets = 436 MM
A s = Area of section = 30100 MM 2

F y = Steel Yield strength = 250 N/MM 2

I xx = Moment of Inertia = 1225624133 MM 4

Z xx = Mod.of.Section = 4167122 MM 3

DESIGN OF FLANGE BOLTS :-

M =Moment in section = 0.6Fy x Zxx

= 625068308 N-MM
= 625.068 KN-M

T F = Tension force = 1250137 N

= 1250.137 KN

Weld thickness @ Flg = 15 mm

Total weld length reqd = 1091.5 mm

Lap length of Flg. Plate @ each side = 750 mm (say)

FLANGE PLATE DESIGN :-

TFP =Thks of flange plate = 32 MM

W FP = Width of plate = 270 MM

W FPN = Net width = 270 MM

Total Weld Length Provided = 1500 mm > 1091.5 mm required.
(HENCE OK )

T c = Tension capacity of plate = 0.6 Fy x T FP x W FPN

= 1296 > 1250.137 KN (HENCE OK )

WEB SPLICE DESIGN :-

For Beams, web splice is designed for 60 % Shear Capacity

BOLTS DESIGN :- DB = Dia of bolt = 16 MM

Bolt Value = 31.4 KN
F S = Shear force = 0.4Fy x T W x D s Bolts are in = Double Shear

= 654 KN

N = No of Bolts = 10 Nos (USE 8.8 GRADE BOLTS )

≈ 10 Nos (say) at each side web

R = No of rows = 5 Nos FSB = Shear Force in each Bolt = 65.40 KN

(this force is shared by no of effective shear planes)
WEB SPLICE PLATE DESIGN :-

W P = Width of plate = 410 MM

T WP = Thks of web plate = 10 MM
No. of web plates = 2
W NP = Net width = 330 MM

F SC = Shear capacity = 660 > 654 KN (HENCE OK )

FB = Bearing stress in plate/ Web = FSB x 1000

Min. thk x dia of Hole

= 181.667 < 187.5 N/MM 2 (HENCE OK )

Summary:-
1) Flange Plate : 32 mm thk & 270 mm wide 1500 mm long
2) Flange Weld : 15 mm thk
3) Web Plate : 10 mm thk & 410 mm deep 2 numbers
rows at each side of
4) Web Bolt : 16 mm Dia & 10 number in 5 web.

Note: However for actual detailing purpose the flange plate is segregated as 20mm +12mm
20mm outer and 12mm inner flg plt and the welding thickness as 10mm and
8mm respectively.
