Developmental Theorist Talk Show

Adolescence is the stage between childhood and adulthood. During this, period adolescents establish
some independence and learn specialized skills required for adult life. However, we generally
associate adolescence with emotional challenges and social turmoil: young people experience
conflict with their parents and struggle to develop their own separate identities. (Macionis and
Gerber, 2010, p. 120)

➢ Task: You and your group are invited to host a “Talk Show” that focuses on Teens social challenges that
will be aired live on CTV during Children’s Month June 2014. You are responsible to identify the
challenging social issue the teen is experiencing, organize an informed show that will stimulate public
awareness and create social control strategies that can be implemented. Highlight useful services that are
accessible to the community. Collaborate in an online forum like office365 for final presentation.
Talk Show Must highlight the following key components:

➢ Create an original name for your “Talk Show” (Oprah, Dr. Phil….use them as inspiration for personality!!!
➢ Identify the goals and objectives of your “Talk Show”
➢ Organize the panel that is comprised of: assigned psychologist, school support worker /social worker/Child
youth worker, parent(s) and/or the problem child
➢ Create an original PSA advertisement that will highlight services that are available in the peel board and in
the community (This will be aired during commercial break of your Talk Show)

Before creating your script, you must present your “problem” to the teacher in the form of a mini case study.
For example:

Julie is 10. She refuses to eat at the kitchen table, and when she does she will not use utensils. Her parents
don’t know how to react and it is affecting family outings.

Tips:

➢ Create questions that will explain the social issue the child is experiencing. Explanation and solution
the theorist will offer, according to their theory. Other community workers will give input based their
knowledge and training and offer services and solutions to help the individual experiencing these
social challenges
➢ Use humour and drama – you want an interested audience
➢ Be creative in your “problem” – it will make script writing easier
➢ Costumes, voice and gestures help you be more believable
➢ Make sure you apply your assigned theory
➢ If you can’t memorize, use cue cards
➢ Assigned individual roles MUST be identifiable
➢ Presentations should be no longer than 30 minutes.
