THE INTERN
I recently came across a particularly good movie that is most likely to stay with me for a long time.
The 2015 movie ‘The Intern’ starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro tells the story of a retired
businessman who becomes a senior intern at an e-commerce fashion startup called About-The-Fit
The film explores themes of ageism mentorship and the ever-evolving world of technology and
business and struck particularly a chord with me. The difficulties and the reality of the contemporary
workplace are depicted in various ways in the movie. The film's characters struggle with the conflict
that is becoming more prevalent between tech-savvy millennials and seasoned elder workers in the
work place. The interns character Ben Whittaker brings valuable knowledge and experience to the
startup but struggles to adapt to the fast-paced, tech-driven environment.
Few things I observed in the movie are: -
1) Mentorship: The movie touches on the importance of mentorship in the workplace, something
that made perfect sense to me. Anne Hathaway plays Jules Ostin, the CEO of the venture and Ben
serves as her mentor. He guides her through the trials and tribulations of managing a company. This
emphasizes the relevance of intergenerational cooperation in the workplace and the value of senior
employees as mentors.
Lesson: You need to always train your team members properly and guide them through career
growth at all steps.
2) Ageism: The movie also delves into the theme of ageism in the workplace. Younger coworkers
initially treat Ben with suspicion and prejudice because they believe he is out of touch and can't keep
up with the fast-paced start-up environment. As the narrative progresses, it becomes clear that Ben
is a great addition to the business and his knowledge and insight are crucial for overcoming the
difficulties of managing a company. Ageism is a serious problem that many older workers deal with in
the workplace. Older workers are more likely to experience bias and discrimination at work and are
often passed over for promotions and new positions according to studies. The Intern urges viewers
to reconsider their preconceptions regarding elder workers and contributes to the awareness-raising
of this subject.
Lesson: Everyone should be respectful and mindful of the elders in the organization and should never
judge them on the basis of age.
3) Generation Gap: One of the most interesting aspects of The Intern is how it depicts the
relationship between the older and young generation. The film demonstrates that intergenerational
cooperation is essential for a successful business and that both generations may learn from one
another through the mentorship between Ben and Jules. This is particularly relevant in today's fast-
paced technologically driven world where the skills and perspectives of different generations are
more important than ever. A discussion of the role of older people in older people's role in
employment is presented in The Intern. Ben his character shows that older people can still contribute
to the workforce and can still learn new skills. This is a significant social message since it dispels the
myth that elderly people are incapable of working or picking up new skills.
Lesson: Everyone should contemplate people based on their skills and talent.
4) Diversity: The Intern also touches on the importance of diversity and inclusivity the work
environment. The staff at the business is made up of individuals of all ages, genders and origins
which reflects the variety found in modern workplaces. The film demonstrates that an inclusive and
diverse workplace is not only the right thing to do but it also helps the company to succeed.
Lesson: Hiring people based on their merits and not just because they graduated from a big school or
they live in a metro city. Invest in people who are interested in learning.
5) Work-Life Balance: Another important aspect of the movie is how it deals with the theme of work-
life balance. The startup’s CEO Jules, played by Anne Hathaway, is a working mother who is having a
hard time in balancing the demands of her business with her responsibilities as a mother and wife.
She is always busy with her work and is always on the go, which leads to her feeling overwhelmed
and stressed. Ben, on the other hand, brings a sense of calm and balance to the startup, and his
mentorship helps Jules to reassess her priorities and make changes to her lifestyle. He advises her to
strike a balance between her personal and professional life and to take time for herself and her
family. In today’s society, the pressure to always being available and to prioritize work over
everything else is a common problem that many people face. In this film the importance of work-life
balance and the detrimental effects that an imbalanced lifestyle can have on one's mental and
physical health are emphasized.
Lesson: Everyone needs to focus on the fact that our jobs are not our life, they are a part of our life.
Maintaining a healthy and cool environment in your office and trying to know the people beyond
their work
.
6) Technology: The Intern also showcases the effects of technology on the fashion industry and how
it is changing the way business is done. The movie's startup is an online fashion retailer that relies
largely on technology to function and connect with its customers. Technology is essential to a
startup's success from website design to social media promotion.
Lesson: You should always find a way on keeping on upgrading your skills and also being open to
learn new things.
In conclusion, The Intern is a film that offers an interesting and provocative look at the contemporary
workplace. It brings up significant problems such as ageism and mentoring and accurately portrays
some of the difficulties and reality of working in a fast-paced, tech-driven workplace. It emphasizes
the value of work-life balance, mentoring and the contribution of senior citizens to the workforce.
The film effectively illustrates the difficulties faced by working professionals and provides insightful
advice on how to overcome them. Even though it makes some artistic concessions to startups and
the fashion industry it serves as a reminder that intergenerational cooperation is crucial for success
in today's business environment and that both younger and older generations can learn a lot from
one another.
Few things I learned from the movie: -
1) He embodies the saying, "No matter how you feel, get up, dress up, show up, and never give up."
He just doesn't stop dressing to impress. Ben (De Niro) and Jules (Hathaway) have shown that they
do not ever stop moving even when you are stuck on a project, in a difficult stage of a relationship, or
need a fresh perspective.
2) The enormous love and enthusiasm for work: Hathaway's work is characterized by a genuine
passion that is simply inspirational. She serves as an inspiration to all young women who aspire to
achieve greatness.
3) Adopt a Caring Mentality: De Niro and Hathaway are consistently approachable and visible
throughout the movie. Both are exhibiting beneficial behaviors that are grounded on values.
Throughout the movie, Hathaway and Robert are portrayed as growing closer to one another
(friendship is precious) and working through the complex mess that life can sometimes be. In a very
open and casual manner, both were providing emotional connections to other coworkers. The entire
workforce thereby improved their engagement with their environment and became more open-
minded in their thinking. fostering excellent relationships. That was clearly evident throughout the
entire film.
