UG Dissertation Guidelines
The following guidelines should be followed for the conduct, preparation and submission of
Bachelor Dissertations.
1. Identification of Area of Research Work: Preparations for the UG Dissertation
shall begin at the start of the sixth semester. Students will be oriented towards
research from the start of the sixth semester. In the sixth semester, students shall
prepare a report, analyzing five research papers critically and shall submit a report.
The students can choose the area of work from the listed areas of research or student
themselves can propose the research topic.
2. Allotment of Supervisor: The students can choose the supervisor based on the listed
areas of research or student themselves can propose the research topic. If any student
expresses his/ her willingness to work in a particular area, the principal concerned
shall constitute a committee to approve project topic/ research problem for
dissertation consisting of minimum 3 faculty members. The committee will interview
the student and allot the project / research mentor. The proposal shall be approved
based on the following
The candidate possesses the competence for the proposed research
The research work can be suitably undertaken at the institution/college
The proposed area of research can contribute to new/additional knowledge
principal shall approve the recommendation of the committee after satisfying
herself/ himself about the project topic / research problem / mentor recommended.
3. Preparation of Synopsis: In the sixth semester, the students should prepare the
synopsis of the research work in consultation with the research supervisor. The
proposed area of research work shall be presented for approval. The synopsis shall
include a brief introduction, purpose of the study, aim and objectives, hypothesis,
expected outcome and methods to be used and references. The guidelines followed for
the thesis preparation may be followed for size of the margins, typeface, type of font,
spacing, numbering and bibliography etc.

4. Institutional Ethical Committee Approval: The student must submit obtain Institutional
Ethics Approval before undertaking research involving human participants.
5. Execution of Project: If the project demands, the student is allowed to work with
other faculty members from the same department. However, the guide should be from
the same faculty and co-guide can be from other faculty of our institute. The resources
available in the department/university can be availed for the dissertation work. A
fixed budget may be allocated by the university to each faculty member for this
purpose.
6. Submission of Project: Each student / team, as the case may be, shall submit
minimum 3 copies of dissertation in the specified format. The dissertation/thesis shall
have an undertaking from the student and a certificate from the Research Supervisor
attesting to the originality of the work, vouching that there is no plagiarism and that
the work has not been submitted for the award of any other degree/diploma of the
same institution where the work was carried out, or to any other Institution.
7. Evaluation of Project / Dissertation: A dissertation undertaken by students shall be
evaluated by external and internal examiners and shall be done as per the Uttaranchal
University rules. The viva-voce examination shall be open to all faculty members of
the Department, other research scholars and other interested experts/researchers.
8. Publication: It will be desirable for each student to publish at-least one review /
research paper in SCOPUS / Web of Science indexed/ UGC approved journals.
AUTHORSHIP
STUDENT
The UG student shall be the first author of a publication resulting from his/her
research project and preferably the guides will be corresponding author, rest all other
contributors will be co-author(s) to be decided by the guides.
The UG student is expected to submit the work for publication within 3 months of
completion of the thesis. Otherwise, the supervisor may prepare a manuscript for
publication taking help from others and they will be entitled to authorship.
The UG supervisor shall be the corresponding author and co-supervisors/ other
contributors in the research work shall be co-authors as per the mutual agreement of
first and corresponding author

ABSTRACT
The abstract should not be more than 300 words. It should have objectives, methods, results,
discussion and brief summary of the thesis. A maximum of 10 key words should be included
at the end of the abstract.
THE TEXT OF THE THESIS
Introduction (Chapter – I): Introduction may be the sixth chapter. It should contain a
brief statement of the problem investigated. It should outline the scope, aim,
objectives, hypothesis and the expected outcome
Review of Literature (Chapter – II): It should include a critical review of the current
literature and can be divided into sections/ subsections based on the objectives
Materials and Methods (Chapter – III): The area of study, study participants, ethical
committee approval, methods or used tools and statistical methods should be
included.
Results and Discussion (Chapter – IV): The results, tables and figures related to the
research work should be included.
Summary and Conclusions (Chapter – V): The last major division (chapter) of the
text. A further and final sub-division titled “Scope for Further Work” may be
included.
Reference Material: The list of references should appear as a consolidated list with
references listed either alphabetically or sequentially as they appear in the text of the
thesis. Spacing and font size should be consistent inside a single reference, and there
should be double spacing between two different references.
Reference Format: The reference should be
Scientific Journal: Authors, title, journal, volume number, page numbers and year
Book: Authors, title, editors, publisher, year, page number
Thesis: Author, title, university, submitted or awarded year
Appendix or Appendices: Supplementary material, original data, and quotations too
lengthy for inclusion in the text can be presented in Appendix or Appendices (as
Appendix A, Appendix B etc.). The title of the appendix should be listed separately in
the table of contents. Tables and figures contained in the Appendices shall be listed in
the lists of tables and figures, respectively.

SPECIFICATIONS FOR THESIS FORMAT
PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPT AND COPIES
The thesis should have a maximum of 100 pages
A4 size paper should be used for printing of thesis
The thesis should be prepared using a standard text processing software
The student should submit the copies of the thesis in a fully bound form and soft copy
in PDF format in a CD
The front cover of the bound copy should be the same as the title page of the thesis.
The pages of all copies of the thesis should have uniform size, spaced characters, lines
and margins on every page
The pages of the thesis should of good quality white paper
Thesis should be free from typographical errors.
All the pages should be single page printed
SIZE AND MARGINS
1. A4 is the recommended thesis size.
2. The top, bottom and right-side margins should be 25 mm, whereas the left side margin
should be 35 mm
3. Content should not extend beyond the bottom margin except for completing a
footnote, last line of chapter/subdivision, or figure/table caption.
4. A sub-head at the bottom of the page should have at least two full lines of content
below it. If the sub-head is too short to allow this, it should begin on the next page.
5. All tables and figures should conform to the same requirements as text.
6. Color may be used for figures.
NUMBER OF PAGES AND NUMBERING
1. It should begin with sixth page of chapter -1, consecutively, all the pages should
be numbered
2. Appendices should be in Roman numerals.
3. Page numbers prior to Chapter 1 should be in lower case Roman numerals.
4. The title page is considered to be the page (i) but the number is not printed.
5. Page numbers should be placed without punctuation in the lower right-hand corner 1.2
cms from the top edge

LINE SPACING
The general text of the manuscript should be in 1.5 spacing. Long tables, quotations,
footnotes, multi-line captions and references should be in single spacing
The text size should be in12 points and typeface should be Times New Roman.
TABLES, FIGURES AND EQUATIONS
All tables (tabulated data) and figures (charts, graphs, maps, images, diagrams,
etc.) should be prepared and inserted as close to the textual reference as possible.
Tables, figures and equations should be numbered sequentially either throughout
the thesis or chapter-wise using Arabic numerals.
They are referred to in the body of the text capitalizing the sixth letter of the word
and number, as for instance, Table 1.1, Figure 3.01 etc.
If tables and figures are of only half a page or less, they may appear on the same
page as text. Font size for text should be the same as for the general text.
Good quality line drawings/figures must be drawn using standard software.
Figures must be scalable.
Images, Photographs, etc. must be scanned in resolution exceeding 600 dpi with 256
grayscales for the monochrome images and 24 bit per pixel for the color images.
