Module 10 Ch 3 Assignment - Data Warehousing vs Data Mining Brenda Arnold
Data Warehousing
Data warehousing can be defined differently depending on the
business organization. However, its primary purpose is combining multiple
databases or resources into a more centralized database where data can be
retrieved quickly. The data is then structured and/or processed for reporting
purposes to be analyzed.
It is essential, especially in healthcare, because providers would have
the most current and comprehensive information concerning their patients.
Therefore, offering the most valued care in resource planning enables a
comprehensive approach. It also allows the executive administration team to
access vital information for last-minute situations that can occur quickly. Not
only does it improve efficiency and speed by being able to access different
data sets, but it also promotes better communication between health
departments. Clinical, HIM, and other professionals learning different
machines, electronics, and/or other advanced techniques, can gain more
profound knowledge and insights regarding treatment plans and be more
efficient.
Healthcare utilizes it in many ways, such as using data to identify,
analyze, make decisions, and many more. By combining data from different
IS systems like clinical provider order entry, financial, administrative, clinical,
and others in patient care, executives and providers can develop benchmark
reports. The benchmark reports can demonstrate how the healthcare
organization performs and the specific problem areas. It can improve
efficiency, insight for financial modeling, and patient care; it can look for
trends. With the gathered data combined with all the different IS systems, it
gains knowledge about the healthcare organization, how it can improve its
decision-making process, and how it operates.

In healthcare, HIM professionals and data warehousing are essential to
the organization for numberless reasons. HIM professionals wear many hats
and have distinct roles depending on the department; however, data is their
primary focus. Therefore, data warehousing should be second nature to
them. The HIM professional has a better understanding of the data needed to
gain better knowledge for precise information at the right time in developing
an IS system for the healthcare organization with the IT team. HIM
professionals can be utilized as either a consultant and/or give input to the IT
personnel due to their extensive background in healthcare, including medical
terminology, patient care, HIPAA, and security laws to design and coordinate
implementation for training purposes to the healthcare professionals.
Analyzing the data and exporting it for reporting purposes to create
benchmark reports will help providers improve patient care where needed.
Data Mining
Data mining is a process of sorting through a large volume of data sets
that have been extracted to identify patterns and relationships that could be
hidden that would help in solving problems when viewing data analysis. It
assists in predicting behaviors from those problems found. The data is also
used to make more informed decisions for executives, determine changes in
patient care, predict future trends, and determine how providers practice
medicine for decision-making.
It is vital for many businesses, especially in healthcare, because it
helps with marketing, patient care, finance, and advertising. The data
obtained can support risk management, be used in business intelligence for
advanced applications in analysis and be useful for cybersecurity planning.
Healthcare data mining is utilized in many ways, such as enhancing
clinical decision-making and morbidity and mortality patterns. It can provide
the best patient care by improving treatment efficiency, increasing diagnosis

accuracy, and avoiding harmful drug interactions with predictive medicine. It
assists providers in making conclusive and more evidence-based diagnoses
in a brief period and the finance department for potential fraud, violations
being abused, and watch patterns of denials.
It also benefits HIM professionals since data is their specialty, need it
to analyze and function as a liaison between the IT department and other
end users if required. It assists them by defining the collected data and
building quality from it, which will be stored later in the data warehouse.
