Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into glucose and oxygen, occurring in chloroplasts containing chlorophyll. This process is crucial as it provides food for plants and animals, produces oxygen for respiration, and helps regulate atmospheric gases. Notably, around 70% of the world's oxygen is generated by oceanic plants such as phytoplankton.

Class Notes: Photosynthesis

Definition

 Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants use sunlight to make food from
carbon dioxide and water.
 Occurs in chloroplasts of plant cells, which contain chlorophyll.

Equation

CO2+H2O+Sunlight→ChlorophyllGlucose+O2\text{CO}_2 + \text{H}_2\text{O} +
\text{Sunlight} \xrightarrow{\text{Chlorophyll}} \text{Glucose} + \text{O}_2CO2+H2
O+SunlightChlorophyllGlucose+O2

Importance

 Provides food for plants and animals.

 Produces oxygen necessary for breathing.
 Helps maintain the balance of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the atmosphere.

Fun Fact

 About 70% of the world’s oxygen comes from ocean plants like phytoplankton!
