COURSE SYLLABUS
Course Name: CHEMISTRY LABORATORY
Course Code: CH012IU
Course designation This subject will provide knowledge on following:
- This one-semester course is designed for engineering
students those who are pursuing a nonchemistry
engineering degree such as information technology,
bio-technology, civil, biomedical, electronic and
telecommunication engineering. The course will
introduce students to basic laboratory safety, techniques
and apparatus, and complement the information gained
in lecture. Prior to each lab, students must read the lab
manual about the experiment and complete a pre-
laboratory report. All students must complete
mandatory safety training to participate in the course,
which will be provided at the first day of the class.
Students are expected to come to each lab on time and
be prepared to carry out the day’s tasks.
Semester(s) in which the 1, 2, and 3 (optional)
module is taught
Person responsible for the MSc. Le, Nguyen Thien Phuc
module
Language English
Relation to curriculum Compulsory
Teaching methods Lectures, Labworks, Assignments, Examination
Workload (incl. contact (Estimated) Total workload: 60 h
hours, self-study hours) + Contact hours (please specify whether lecture, exercise,
laboratory session, etc.): 30 h for labworks
+ Private study including examination preparation, specified
in hours1: 30 h
Credit points 1 (Lab)
Required and recommended None
prerequisites for joining the
module
Course objectives After studying this course, the students will be able to:
- Understand the basic of general chemistry laboratory.
- Build a firm foundation in chemistry laboratory for
careers in science and engineering.
Course learning outcomes Upon the successful completion of this course students will
be able to:
Competency Course learning outcome (CLO)
level
Knowledge CLO1. Understanding laboratory safety and
reaction kinetics; and applying chemical
concepts to draw logical conclusions about
the applicability of data to real world
problems.
Skill CLO2. Being able to perform experiments
in chemistry; analyze data; answer
questions; make conclusion; research
assignments; and report writing, including
collecting and managing data to express
their results in a precise and reliable
quantitative or qualitative form on lab
reports.
Attitude CLO3. Developing teamwork skills that
include not only the efficient acquisition of
experimental data, but also the awareness of
safety in the laboratory setting.
1
When calculating contact time, each contact hour is counted as a full hour because the organisation of the
schedule, moving from room to room, and individual questions to lecturers after the class, all mean that about 60
minutes should be counted.
Content The description of the contents should clearly indicate the
weighting of the content and the level.
Weight: lab session (6 hours)
Teaching levels: I (Introduce); T (teach); U (Utilize)
Topic Weight Level
Chemical Reactions 1 T, U
pH and Buffers 1 T, U
Redox Titration 1 T, U
Chemical Equilibrium 1 T, U
Factors Affecting Reaction Rate 1 T, U
Examination forms Practical test and Multiple choice questions
Study and examination + Attendance: An attendance of 100 percent is compulsory
requirements for the class sessions. Students will be assessed on the basis
of their class participation. Questions and comments are
strongly encouraged.
+ Assignments/Examination: Students must have more than
50/100 points overall to pass this course.
