SAP Quality Management Master Data

Quality Management (QM), master data refers to the important data elements that are foundational for managing
quality-related processes within the SAP system. This data is crucial for ensuring that products meet specified
quality standards and includes several key components.

Types of Master data in SAP QM

A. MIC – Master Inspection Characteristic
B. Inspection Method
C. Sampling
D. Inspection Plan

A. MIC -> Master inspection characteristics MIC is a parameter to be inspected during inspection of any
material.

MIC are required to describe the inspection specifications for materials like length, width, viscosity, etc.

We create master inspection characteristics at the plant level to simplify and standardize the Master Recipe,
Inspection Plan and maintenance task list. We can also create the different versions for the single
MIC.inspection planning activities.

These characteristics can be used in Routings, The below are the types of Master Inspection characteristics
available in SAP.

a. Quantitative
Quantitative characteristics are used to record the results of the Quantitative inspection.

Values of inspection can be directly feed to these type of characteristics while performing results recording.
Characteristics specification limits like Upper Limit, Lower Limit, and central limits can be defined for each
inspection characteristics at master level or while creating an inspection plan.

Inspection Method can also be attached to inspection characteristics level.

b. Qualitative:
Qualitative characteristics are used to record the results of Attribute inspection like “Ok” or “Not ok”.

Code groups / Selected sets of Catalog type 1 can be used for recording result against Qualitative
inspection characteristics. Appropriate inspection method can be attached to inspection characteristics.

Color: Describing a product as "bright red" or "deep blue."

Surface Quality: Terms like "smooth," "rough," or "blemished."

SAP Quality Management Master Data
 Enter Plant Code.
 Enter master inspection characteristic code to be created.
 Enter the valid from date and click ENTER.

 Select the checkbox for quantitative if you are creating Quantitative Characteristic which can be
measured.
 Select the status as "Released"
 Select Complete copy model from the drop-down list as the MIC data needs to be maintained
completely.
 Enter the Short text and search field as per your choice.
 Click the Control indicators button at the top to maintain other important data like lower and
upper limits. You can define the range when material is accepted for production.

click the Control Indicator button, a new dialog box appears. This is to maintain the lower and upper
limit data.

 Select Lower specification limit.

 Select upper specification limit.
 Select sampling procedure to use sampling procedure.

To move to the next screen, press ENTER and you will be redirected to the Tolerance window.

Enter lower limit & Upper limit

Click the tick mark and you will be on the main screen. To save the master inspection characteristics, click the save
button.

B. Inspection Method

inspection method is a systematic approach used to evaluate the quality and compliance of products, processes,
or services against predefined standards. It plays a crucial role in quality management by ensuring that items meet
specific requirements and identifying any defects or non-conformities.

What is an Inspection Method?

An inspection method is a way to check the quality of products or services to make sure they meet certain
standards. It involves specific steps and tools used to evaluate whether something is good enough or if there are
any problems.

Why Do We Use Inspection Methods?

Find Problems Early: Inspection methods help identify defects or issues before products reach customers,
ensuring only quality items are delivered.

Ensure Compliance: They verify that products meet legal and industry standards, which is important for safety
and quality.

Consistency: Using standardized methods ensures that inspections are done the same way every time, leading to
reliable results.

Improve Quality: Feedback from inspections helps organizations learn from mistakes and improve their processes
over time.

Train Inspectors: They provide guidelines for what inspectors should look for and how to evaluate products,
ensuring that everyone is on the same page.
 Enter Plant Code.
 Enter inspection method to be created.
 Enter the valid from the date that determines the inspection method valid date.

 Enter status as Released.

 Enter the short text of the inspection method and search field for searching for inspection methods.
 To save the Inspection method, click the save button.

C. Sampling
SAP Quality Management Master Data

sampling procedure is used to determine the sample size for an inspection lot during quality planning. It
defines the criteria for selecting a subset of items from a larger population for inspection.

In sampling plan, you define the sample size specification for the inspection lot, to determine if a sample is
accepted or not accepted.

To create a sampling procedure, use T-Code: QDV1. The image given below shows how to create a
Sampling procedure.

In the next window, you have to enter the Sampling procedure name and click the tick icon at the top.

 Sampling type
 Valuation mode
 Inspection Points

Press ENTER, select Control chart type. At the top, you have a Sample button. Click the Sample button to
open a Sample attribute window. Enter the sample size and click the tick button.

D. Inspection Plan
In the inspection plan, you have to define the sequence of inspection steps to be performed and the range of
specifications as per the Master Inspection Characteristics, sampling procedure to calculate the sample size for
inspection, inspection method, etc.

You can define the status of Inspection plan as Active/ Inactive and usage of the plan.
You need an inspection plan to capture the results of quality records.

To create Inspection plan, use T-Code: QP01.

 Enter input material code, which we need to create an inspection plan.

 Enter Plant code.
 Enter the key date from which inspection plan to be valid
 To move to next screen, press ENTER

 Enter the input usage as 5, which means inspection plan will be valid for goods received and status
as 4, which means the plan is released.
 Select the lot size as 99999999 that allows an inspection plan to be valid for inspection lot quantity
of 99999999.
 Press the Operations button at the top to move to the next screen.

 Enter the work center.

 Enter the control key as QM01 to show a quality check.

 Enter the maintain inspection characteristics for the operation.

 Input the Master inspection characteristic name .
 Enter the Inspection method.
 Input sampling Procedure to determine the sample.
 Enter the lower and upper limits automatically click the save button.
