QUESTIONS.
Advocacy Skills: As a social worker, how would you support John in advocating
for stronger enforcement of the Jamaican Disability Act (2014) to ensure he
receives necessary accommodations in educational and public spaces? (4
points)
As a social worker, my role is to advocate in order for him to receive the care and help needed.
First of all, I would bring awareness to the public by educating them about disability. The dignity
of others is to be valued and respected in all circumstances. The legislation protects and
promotes equal rights for persons with disabilities, prohibits discrimination against them, and
ensures access to education no one is exempt. I would also engage in lobbying efforts to make
sure these laws are properly enforced and that John and other individuals with disabilities
receive the services, accommodations, and support they deserve.
Social Work Role: Given John’s challenges with accessing public spaces, how would
you apply the role of a social worker to address and challenge the structural barriers
that limit his participation in everyday life? (4 points)
My role as a social worker is to connect clients with the right services needed to support them,
be their voice, and also empower them to speak up for themselves. I would work alongside
families and communities to promote active involvement and inclusion.
To challenge the structural barriers John faces, I would first assess the specific obstacles such as
limited transportation, lack of ramps, and missing handicap signs. I would then collaborate with
relevant agencies, including local government and advocacy groups, to push for changes that
meet accessibility standards.
Additionally, I would help John understand his rights and how to request the accommodations he
needs, while promoting policies that support full access and inclusion in everyday community
life.

Human Rights: What Are They?
Human Rights and Dignity God created all of us equally no one should be treated unequally.
It’s funny how some people look down on others without respect or value. Human dignity
signifies the respect due to all human beings, regardless of their background, abilities, or status.
It means understanding that every person has worth simply because they are human, and that
worth must be recognized and upheld.
This belief is the foundation of human rights: the basic freedoms and protections every person
deserves. As human beings, we have the right to life, freedom of speech, access to education,
shelter, food, healthcare, and protection from abuse or discrimination.
As a social work student in training , I understand the importance of standing up for those whose
voices are often ignored. In my community, I see how the lack of proper healthcare and housing
for the less fortunate causes others to look down on them, as if their circumstances define their
worth. This is a painful reminder that human dignity is still not a reality for everyone. Human
rights are not just about laws, they are about how we treat each other. As children of God, it is
our duty to love our neighbors, speak out against injustice, and stand up for what is right. Every
act of kindness, respect, and justice upholds human dignity.
