2nd Shift Maintenance Guide

Hematology
 Sed Rate:
o Maintenance
 Daily Maintenance- Emptying the Waste container
 Before emptying the waste container, you must run a washing cycle. Press the little yellow
sponge button on the bottom. This will force a wash cycle to run. When the instrument says
idle- you can now change the waste.
 Open the door and unscrew the waste container lid. Dump the liquid waste down a dirty
sink. Rinse the container with some water. If the container is extremely soiled- replace it
with a new waste container.
 Make sure when you put the waste container back in the instrument and screw the lid on-
that the “Vent Hole This Side Up” is facing the right direction.
 Press the emptied waste icon (The full pink container button that has an arrow pointing to
an empty container).
 Monthly Maintenance- Deep Clean
 Done on the 1st of the month or every 1000 samples run.
 Grab an empty purple tube and add approximately 3.5 ml of 6-7 % hypochlorite (bleach).
 Press the Deep Clean Button (the blue sponge with bubbles). Once screen prompts you,
insert the Deep Clean tube into the sample loading position and press continue.
 Once the deep clean procedure is completed, remove and discard the bleach-filled tube.

o QC
 QC is usually ran around 2 pm.
 QC needs to rock on a mechanical rocker for at least 5 minutes before running. If it’s a new bottle of
QC, it needs to rock for 20 minutes prior to first use.
 We switch days of which level of QC we run first.
 On Odd days- We run Level 1 QC first
 On Even days- We run level 2 QC first.
 QC needs to be entered into Unity.
 Maintenance and QC gets documented in the GCMC Hematology iSED binder.

 P2Y12
o Maintenance
o Maintenance is done on the 1st and 15th of the month.
o Internal Cleaning of Instrument
o Locate the cleaning device pack. Cleaning devices come individually packed in a
clear plastic bag with a brightly colored label
o Grasp the cleaning device using the finger grip and remove the clear plastic
tape. Discard the tape.
o Open the cover and insert the cleaning device into the assay device port until it
clicks. The adhesive strip removes dust and debris on the internal pneumatic
port cleaning strip.
o Leave the cleaning device in the assay port for five seconds, but never longer
than ten seconds.
o Remove the cleaning device completely from the assay device port. Discard the
device. The cleaning device is for single use only.
o Clean External Surface with Lint free cloth damped with isopropyl alcohol.
o Clean/Replace Fan Filter
o Power off the instrument. The fan filter is held in place by a press fit retainer.
Using your fingernail or a small tool, gently pull from the center of the filter
retainer.
o Remove the fan filter and inspect it for dust accumulation. You can clean it
using your hands, a vacuum, or canned air.
o If necessary, replace it with a new filter.
o Gently replace the fan filter and plastic filter retainer. Do not position the
instrument so that airflow to the fan is obstructed.
o Turn the instrument back on.
o All Maintenance needs to be performed BEFORE QC is ran on the 1st and 15th of the
month.
o QC
o QC needs to be ran at the beginning of the shift (Around 2pm ish). This is to be done on the 1 st
and 15th after performing Maintenance or when we have a new lot of P2Y12 cartridges (there is
a crossover log in the P2Y12 Binder).
o Our instrument is Instrument B.
o There are two parts to the QC- The EQC and the Wet QC.
2|Page
o The EQC needs to be ran first and is just one cartridge
o The Wet QC is two levels
o Check policy for QC instructions.
o QC will get documented in Unity as well as in the P2Y12 Binder.

Coagulation
 Stago QC gets ran at 4 pm. We use the QC material made up by the previous shift for our QC. We run PT,
PTT, D-Dimer, and Fibrinogen controls.
 QC needs to be accepted in Stago Expert.

Manual Bench
 Clinitek:
o Maintenance:
 Daily Maintenance- Clean the test table insert
 Remove the insert and thoroughly clean by rinsing both sides of the table under
running water
 Dry and replace insert.
 Weekly Maintenance- Clean the test table
 Done every Friday
 Remove the test table by pulling it slowly out of the analyzer. Lift the insert from the
test table. Using an alcohol prep pad, carefully clean the test table (except for white
calibration bar). Dry the test table thoroughly (except for the white calibration bar)
with a (Kimwipe).
o DO NOT TOUCH THE WHITE CALIBRATION BAR.
 Inspect the calibration bar for scratches, dirt, or discoloration.
 Reinsert the test table into the analyzer by holding the table at the end opposite the
white calibration bar, with the white calibration bar facing upwards.
 Push the test table firmly but slowly, just over halfway into the analyzer. Do not
push the test table fully into the analyzer. Replace the test table insert.
 Monthly Maintenance- Disinfect the test table and insert
 Done the 1st of the Month

3|Page
 Using a germicidal wipe, wipe the top and sides of the test table and allow to air
dry.
o Avoid the calibration bar.
 Rinse with water.
 Dry with a soft cloth and replace in the analyzer.
o QC:
 QC is usually run around 2pm. The Clinitek will say QC Test Due when it is ready to run. Do
not run it before it says this.
 When you click the QC button; it prompts you to enter the lot number of QC and expiration
date. Follow the prompts on the screen.
 You will run QC level 1 first, followed by level 2.
 Be sure to print your QC results when they pop up on the screen. We use these printouts
and stick them in a binder.
 Document your QC results in the Urinalysis Clinitek Status + Maintenance Binder. Make sure
the results that you write down are in range. Write your initials and the date on the QC
result print out, and stick it on a blank sheet of paper.
o Maintenance and QC gets documented in the GCMC Urinalysis Clinitek Status + binder.

 Refractometer
o QC is usually run around 2pm.
o The refractometer must be QC’d using deionized water and two levels of urine controls once each
day of use.
o Write your results in the GCMC Refractometer Binder
o Make sure that your results are within range.

Chemistry
 AVL
o 2nd shift is responsible for checking the reagent level on each AVL
 Cycle through the options by pressing the No button on the front of the AVL until you see
Operator Functions, then press the Yes button.
 Cycle through the options until it says Check/ Change Snap pack then press the Yes button.
 The first thing that pops up should be the percentage.
4|Page
 If the percentage is 5% or less- we need to replace the SnapPack with a new one.
 If the percentage is higher than 5%- we are okay to continue running on the current
SnapPack.
 Vitros #2
o Daily Maintenance
 We usually start maintenance around 1:30pm.
 We perform ERF maintenance every day

 Make sure that all of the QC crosses over into Unity; and Review and validate all of your
results.
 Vitros Automation Solutions (VAS)
o Daily
 Done daily whenever you have free time to do so. We usually try to flip the sign on the
Track to “Not In Use” right when we come in, and start maintenance on it about 20 mins
later while day shift is still here to help us front load specimens.
 For instructions on what to do or how to perform the necessary maintenance consult
the VAS Routine Maintenance procedure.
o Weekly
 Done on Fridays.
 Do the regular maintenance but stop in the guide where it says to Exit the TCA
application.
 Do all of your weekly maintenance then shut down the Track computers and the
TCA computer according to policy (This counts as the exit TCA application).
 For instructions on what to do or how to perform the necessary maintenance
consult the VAS Routine Maintenance procedure.
 Be sure to dump the liquid compressor waste on the track system- this tends to
get missed a lot and isn’t listed in the maintenance procedure.
