Experiment: MIXING OF IDEAL LIQUID STREAMS
Objectives of the Experiment
1. Develop a simple process sheet to mix two liquid streams and estimate the flow rate and composition
of outlet stream.
Methodological Framework
1. Start Simulation
1
a. Open DWSIM (Version 5.1 - Classic UI)
b. Select "New Steady State Simulation" template
2. Add Components
a. Add Water and Methanol from "ChemSep" database
b. Specify the thermodynamic package as Raoult’s law
3. Customize System Units
a. Set the desired units and click “Next”
4. Define Input Streams
a. Drag and drop two material streams:
b. Inlet Stream 1: 20 kmol/h, 10 mol% Methanol, 90 mol% Water, 30°C, 1 bar
c. Inlet Stream 2: 10 kmol/h, 80 mol% Methanol, 20 mol% Water, 30°C, 1 bar
5. Add Mixer
a. Drag and drop the Stream Mixer block and rename it as "Mixer"
6. Connect Streams
a. Connect Inlet Stream 1 and Inlet Stream 2 to the Mixer
b. Add Outlet Stream and connect it to the Mixer
7. Execute the Simulation
a. Click "Solve Flow Sheet" button
8. Evaluate the Results
a. Open "Master Property Table" to display results
Hypothesis: Executing a steady-state simulation in DWSIM is expected to provide accurate calculations of
the composition, temperature, and flow rate of the mixed outlet stream based on the specified inlet stream
conditions. The simulation should yield reliable results for analyzing the mixing process and optimizing
stream conditions.
Key Assumptions:
1. Accurate Input Data - All input specifications, including stream composition, flow rate,
temperature, and pressure, will correctly represent real-world conditions.
2
2. Thermodynamic Validity - The IAPWS-IF97 Raoult’s law thermodynamic package will accurately
model the behavior of the ideal liquid streams, ensuring precise calculation of the mixed stream
properties.
3. Model Reliability - The DWSIM simulation framework, including the stream mixer block and
material streams, will operate as expected, delivering realistic results for the composition and flow
rate of the outlet stream.

Planning and Execution of the Experiment, Mixing of Ideal Liquid Streams
1. Planning the Execution of the Experiment
The objective of the experiment is to develop a
process sheet for mixing two liquid streams and
estimate the flow rate and composition of the outlet
Objective Review stream using DWSIM software.
The team agreed that the experiment will help in
understanding the fundamentals of process
simulation and the behavior of ideal liquid mixtures.
Roles and Responsibilities Marvin: Responsible for setting up the DWSIM
simulation and ensuring the correct input
parameters are entered.
5
Keen: He will assist Marvin in setting up the
simulation and will focus on verifying the
thermodynamic package (Raoult’s Law) and
