Toolkit - Functions Gr11

Students are tasked with creating an original emoji using various functions and graphing software, and must produce a written report of at least three pages. The report should include a title, introduction, discussion of methodology, conclusion, and bibliography, while demonstrating understanding of functions and transformations. The project will be assessed based on originality, complexity, and the proper application of mathematical processes and notation.

Student Name: Unit/Subject:

Functions -
Transformations
Due Date : November 25, 2023 Class: 11 AA SL

Assessment Instructions:
Emoji Transformations & Modelling Functions

Goal:
Your task by PAIR is:
A. To (A)create an original EMOJI from different kinds of functions
using any graphing softwares (Desmos, Geogebra, GDC, etc),
(B)Model/Trace any objects or (C)Tracking any motions using
functions. Create a “Written/Research Report” of minimum of 3
pages from Introduction to Bibliography/Sources.

B. Expectations & Standard

1. Apply and explain concepts of functions and transformations
(parent functions, limiting domains, other functions not
discussed in class like conics)
2. Use different kinds of functions (as many as possible).
3. Originality and Complexity of the Emoji and Objects to be
modelled.
4. Apply properly technology and math equation editor when
transferring math symbols and processes to the report.
5. Evidence of “exploration or investigation”

PARTS of Written Report:

A. Title (catchy)
B. Short Introduction and Rationale
C. Discussion / Methodology
D. Short Conclusion
E. Bibliography in MLA format

Please follow the general format in doing a Research Paper.

Parts:
1. Cover/Title Page

2. Introduction
In this context, the word “task” is defined as “what you are going to
do”, the word “plan” is defined as “how are you going to do it”. A
statement of the task should appear at the beginning of each project. It
is expected that each project has a clear title (which is already in your
cover page)

3. Discussion (should include the following)

a) Information/Measurement – Mathematical information includes
geometrical figures and data that is collected empirically or
assembled from outside sources. This list is not exhaustive and
mathematical information does not solely imply data for statistical
analysis.
b) Mathematical Processes – You are expected to use rules where
necessary and not merely a sketch since it is not considered a
correct math process. When technology is used, you are expected
to show a clear understanding of the mathematical process used.
The teacher is responsible for determining the accuracy of the
mathematics used.
c) Validity – it addresses whether appropriate techniques were used to
collect information, whether appropriate mathematics was used to
deal with this information, and whether the mathematics used has
any limitations in its applicability within the project.
d) Structure and Communication – it is referred to the organization of
the information, calculations and interpretations in such a way as to
present the project as a logical sequence of thought and activities
starting with the task and the plan, and finishing with the
conclusions and limitations.
e) Notation and Terminology – this refers to the use of correct
terminology and mathematical notation. The use of calculator or
spreadsheet notation is acceptable.

4. Conclusion, Evaluation & Limitation

Use of the terms “interpretation” and “conclusion” refer very

specifically to statements about what the mathematics used tells us
after it has been used to process the original information or data.
Discussion of limitations and validity of the process is assessed
elsewhere.

5. Bibliography
