End of term exam IGCSE PHYSICS (core)

Duration: 1hr 30mins

READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST

Answer all questions.

Electronic calculators may be used.
You may lose marks if you do not show your working or if you do not use appropriate
units.
Take the weight of 1.0kg to be 10N (acceleration of free fall = 10m/s 2).
At the end of the examination, fasten all your work securely together.
The number of marks is given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part question.
The total marks is 60.
1 a) A student has a pile of A4 paper for his computer printer. Fig. 1.1 shows the dimensions of the
pile of paper.

The pile contains 500 sheets of paper. Calculate the average thickness of one sheet of paper. (1)

(b) Show that the pile of paper has a volume of 3000 cm3 . Use the information shown in Fig.1.1. (1)

(c) The mass of the paper in the pile is 2400 g. Calculate the density of the paper. (3)

2 a) During a training flight, a fighter jet travelling at 300 m/s makes a turn to avoid bad weather.

Fig 2.1

Compare the speed and velocity between points A and B in Fig. 2.1 (3)

b) The speed-time graph of a different test flight is presented to an analyst. State how she uses the
graph to determine the distance travelled during the test flight. (1)

(c) The speed-time graph for the initial part of the fighter jet's test flight is shown in Fig 2.2:
Fig 2.2

(i) State the length of time for which the jet is travelling at constant speed. (1)
(ii) Calculate the distance covered by the jet during this time. (2)

(d) A student drops a ball from a high window. The mass of the ball is 0.12 kg. Calculate the weight
of the ball. (3)

(g) What is terminal velocity? (2)

3 a) State Newton’s first law (1)

b) A model aircraft is flying through air. Fig. 3.1 shows the forces acting on the model aircraft.
The weight of the model aircraft is 15.0 N.

(i) Determine the size and direction of the resultant horizontal force acting on the model
aircraft (2)
(ii) Describe the change in the motion of the model aircraft. (2)

4 (a) Define the term moment.(1)

(b) A 50 cm rule is balanced at its mid-point. A force of 8.0 N acts at a distance of 10 cm from
one end of the rule. Fig. 4.1 shows the arrangement.
Fig 4.1
Calculate the moment of the 8.0 N force about the pivot. Give the unit. (5)
5 (a) A group of students want to measure their power output when climbing a ladder. Student
A has a mass of 54 kg and takes 15 s to climb the ladder which has a vertical height of 1.8 m.
Calculate the work done in raising the student's body mass as they climb the ladder. (2)
b) Calculate the power output of Student A in raising their body mass up the ladder. (2)

6 Solar farms have advantages and disadvantages.

(i) State two advantages of a solar farm. (ii) State one disadvantage of a solar farm. (3)

7 a) Describe how the pressure beneath the surface of a liquid changes

(i) With depth. (ii) With density of the liquid. (2)

b) All matter is made up of atoms and molecules.

Describe the arrangement, separation and motion of gas molecules. (3)

8 a) Equal volumes of steel, oil and hydrogen are heated from 20 °C to 60 °C.

Their volumes increase by thermal expansion.

State which of these substances has the greatest increase in volume. (1)

b) Fig. 5.1 shows a liquid-in-glass thermometer.

Fig 5.1

(i) State the temperature reading on the thermometer. (1)

(ii) State the temperature range of the thermometer. (1)
(iii) State the values of the fixed points of the Celsius scale of temperature. (1)

c) The liquid-in-glass thermometer uses the thermal expansion of mercury. State and explain
one other application or consequence of thermal expansion in science or engineering. (3)
