Experiment No: 06

Experiment Name: Study of the waveform of a clipper circuit.

Objectives:

To observe, measure and calculate readings, draw curve and study the characteristics
of clipper circuit.

Equipment’s:

1. Diode ( 1 piece )
2. Resistor ( 1 piece ) ( 10 kΩ )
3. Function Generator
4. DC Power supply ( 5 V )
5. Connecting Probe
6. Oscilloscope

Theory:

There are a variety of diode networks called clippers that have the ability to “clip” off
a portion of the input signal without distorting the remaining part of the alternating
waveform. The half-wave rectifier is an example of the simplest form of diode clipper
—one resistor and diode. Depending on the orientation of the diode, the positive or
negative region of the input signal is “clipped” off. There are two general categories
of clippers: series and parallel. The series configuration is defined as one where the
diode is in series with the load, while the parallel variety has the diode in a branch
parallel to the load. The network of Fig. 1 is the simplest of parallel diode
configurations.

If any voltage source is connected in series with the diode in reverse direction with
input source, then diode configuration and output is like fig. 2. Here, V o = Vi – V and
-Vo = – 2V

Experimental Diagram:

Experimental Data:

Input : Input voltage, vi = 15.4 volt

Frequency, f =100 Hz

Time period, T = 12.2 ms

Output: Output voltage, Vm = 5.7 volt ( positive half cycle )

And, - Vm = 15.5 volt ( negative half cycle )

Time period, T = 11.9 ms  12 ms

Conclusion:

The Clipper circuit design output waveforms have been studied and the required
parameters are compared. Today’s lab is about the understanding of clippers that what
are clippers circuits how and why they are formed and how to use diodes to make
clipper circuits. Moreover, to analysis the working of diode in limiters or clippers and
to find the waveforms. At the end, all the required values and circuits are obtained
with the help of oscilloscope
