Module 6 Activity – Caesar Cipher Decryption

Decrypted Message: COMPUTER

Ciphertext Letter Alphabet Position Shift Back by 3 Decrypted Letter

F 6 6-3=3 C

R 18 18 - 3 = 15 O

P 16 16 - 3 = 13 M

S 19 19 - 3 = 16 P

X 24 24 - 3 = 21 U

W 23 23 - 3 = 20 T

H 8 8-3=5 E

U 21 21 - 3 = 18 R

Explanation of Steps:
The encrypted message given is "FRPSXWHU," and it is with the help of a Caesar Cipher key
that we know to be 3. To decrypt such a message, we have to shift every letter of the
ciphertext backward through the alphabet by 3 positions. For example, we have, "F"
becomes "C," "R" becomes "O," and so on. This backward shifting would continue for each
and every character. After shifting all letters backward, the message becomes,
"COMPUTER," which is a common English word.
