Upstream and Downstream Processing

Fermentation technology is divided into two main stages:

Upstream Processing

This includes all the steps leading to fermentation:

●​ Strain Selection and Improvement: Selecting or engineering high-yielding microbial strains.​

●​ Media Preparation: Providing essential nutrients like carbon, nitrogen, vitamins, and minerals.​

●​ Sterilization: Ensuring a contamination-free environment.​

●​ Inoculum Development: Scaling up microbial culture before inoculating the main fermenter.​

Downstream Processing

These are post-fermentation steps to recover and purify the product:

●​ Cell Separation: Removing microbial biomass using centrifugation or filtration.​

●​ Product Extraction: Solvent extraction, precipitation, or chromatography.​

●​ Purification: Refining the product to acceptable purity levels, especially for pharmaceuticals.​

●​ Drying and Packaging: Final processing for storage and distribution.
