Upstream and Downstream Processing
Fermentation technology is divided into two main stages:
Upstream Processing
This includes all the steps leading to fermentation:
● Strain Selection and Improvement: Selecting or engineering high-yielding microbial strains.
● Media Preparation: Providing essential nutrients like carbon, nitrogen, vitamins, and minerals.
● Sterilization: Ensuring a contamination-free environment.
● Inoculum Development: Scaling up microbial culture before inoculating the main fermenter.
Downstream Processing
These are post-fermentation steps to recover and purify the product:
● Cell Separation: Removing microbial biomass using centrifugation or filtration.
● Product Extraction: Solvent extraction, precipitation, or chromatography.
● Purification: Refining the product to acceptable purity levels, especially for pharmaceuticals.
● Drying and Packaging: Final processing for storage and distribution.
