Assignment 2

The assignment involves analyzing fricatives using Praat, focusing on their duration, intensity, and spectral characteristics. Students are required to annotate segments and analyze specific fricatives, noting differences in duration and intensity based on their place of articulation. A spectrogram of the words is also to be created as part of the assignment.

Assignment 2 Using Praat to analyze fricatives

2. Analyze fricatives from the audio file.

Fricative Duration Intensity COG

ʃ 0.18 s 64 dB 3040 Hz
s 0.17 s 62 dB 7050 Hz
f 0.12 s 60 dB 6498 Hz
θ 0.11 s 56 dB 5329 Hz

3.
a-How do fricatives of various places of articulation differ in terms of duration? What
observations do you see?

Fricatives differ slightly in term of duration especially between ʃ (the longest ) and S , also
between f and θ ( the shortest ) . it looks like the more posterior the place of articulation is
(further back in the oral cavity as in ʃ ), the longer the fricative sound last before the air exits out
of the mouth.

b- How do the fricatives differ in terms of intensity?

ʃ has the highest intensity (64 dB) then s (62 dB) followed by f (60 dB) and θ has the lowest (56
dB) . they look like ordered from posterior (high intensity) to anterior (lower intensity )
according to place of articulation and also according to intensity and the energy they have.

c-How do the four fricatives differ in terms of their spectra? How do centre of gravity values for
each fricative correspond to their differences in places of articulation?

The four fricatives differ in their spectra based on how the energy is distributed across
frequencies. Sibilant fricatives (s and ʃ ) have more concentrated high-frequency energy, while
non-sibilants ( f and θ) show weaker and more diffuse spectral patterns.

ʃ has the lowest COG (3040 Hz) due to its postalveolar position, where energy shifts to lower
frequencies.
s has the highest COG (7050 Hz), showing strong high-frequency energy because of its alveolar
articulation.

F has a high but slightly lower COG than s (6498 Hz) as a labiodental and as having a diffuse
noise
θ shows a moderate COG and lower than f (5329 Hz), consistent with its dental place and has
diffuse noise.
