THE CROSSROADS

By Craig Fox and Arley Dial

A MISSION FOR LEVEL 1-4 RANGERS

Bloodied but unbroken, you emerge from the Shadow Deep after completing your assigned
mission. The companion you sent to scout ahead returns with news that you have emerged from the
dark realm near Tor Glaucous, one of the few watch towers along the Lorenthian frontier still held by
the forces of Alladore. It seems that Lady Luck's wayward green eyes have finally deigned to spare you
a glance.
Weary beyond measure, you and your surviving companions take your rest within the relative
safety of the watch tower for the night. The officer in charge informs you that great efforts have been
made to defend Tor Glaucous against the forces of the Shadow Deep due to it's position near a major
crossroads. During more peaceful times, the crossroads was vital to trade between Alladore and
Lorenthia. Ever since the Night of Green Fire however, the dust of the crossroads has been churned not
by the traders' wagon-wheels, but by the by the boots of marching infantry.
The night seems to pass too quickly and you emerge from your billet to find the area around the
tor blanketed in thick fog. Despite the damp weather, you and your companions are soon ready to begin
the long trek back to Tallis. Thanking the soldiers who provided you with nourishment and shelter you
set out from the tower, grateful that the grim curtain of the Shadow Deep is behind you.
The morning fog begins to clear as you approach the crossroads. A half-heard sound causes
you to pause and signal your companions to halt. Silence reigns for only a moment before you hear a
pained curse followed by the unmistakable yapping of gnolls. As you signal your companions forward,
a young woman, stained with mud and blood, emerges from the thinning mist.
“Praise St. Emilia,” cries the half-hysterical woman. “You must help Da and the others!”
“We will form and line of defense here,” you reply glancing at your companions. “Your folk
will be safe in the tower yonder once they-”
“But the wagon has thrown a wheel,” the weeping girl sobs. “It is full of our seed stock, it's all
we were able to get way with when they came. It's all we have left!”
Muttering a curse, you start toward the growing commotion at the crossroads. It seems that
your respite from battle will be short lived indeed...
SET-UP
The scenario is played on a 30”x30” table. One side of the table should be designated as the
hero edge. Two roads, each 2” wide, run from the center of the table to the table edges. The roads are
bordered by a low wall or hedgerow. Place two gnoll archers behind the cover of the wall on the
opposite side of the road from the hero edge. Place a disabled wagon at the center of the crossroads.
Place four civilians (see the main rule book for civilian stats) on or near the wagon. Place a draft animal
(stats below) at the front of the wagon. The roads should be clear of obstructions (besides the disabled
wagon) but the rest of the table should contain several rocks and trees.
Heroes should be placed within 3 inches of the hero edge.

Special Rules
The object of this scenario is to help the civilians repair their wagon and protect them as they
make their way off the board on the hero edge.
The low wall bordering the roads count as Light Cover +2, as does the wagon. The wall (or
fence, or hedge) and all of the terrain beyond it count as rough ground.
Before the card phase of each round the players will make a repair roll (TN 14) each figure on
or adjacent to the wagon that spends an action helping repair the wagon adds +2 to the repair roll. The
four civilians which start the scenario near the wagon may assist with the repair roll, but any refugees
which enter the table during the scenario may not. For each successful repair roll, add the amount the
TN was exceeded by to a cumulative “repair tracker”. Once the repair tracker equals or exceeds 10, the
wagon is repaired and may get underway. The wagon is heavily laden so the draft animals may not take
the dash action (maximum move 6” per activation).

Draft Animal RP 5
Move Fight Shoot Armour Will Health Notes
6 1 0 11 5 16 Pack animal

Refugees that come onto the table during the card phase are controlled by the players and act as
companions during the remainder of the scenario. Refugees have the stats of a civilian, but are not
armed and may not make the fight action or intentionally move into contact with any creatures on the
board.

Draw one card from the deck during the card phase of each round.

The when the last card is drawn, ignore it and read the following:

A horn sounds in the retreating mist and you realize that the enemy has arrived in
force. There is nothing left to do save fall back to Tor Glaucous and prepare for the
onslaught...
