Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.
Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or
near the machine.
Prevent possible injury by performing the procedure that follows before
working on the machine.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog"
for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat®
products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.
2. Place the transmission control lever in the PARK position.
3. Place blocks in front of the wheels and behind the wheels.
4. Raise the body and install the body retaining pins.
5. Allow only authorized personnel on the machine. Keep unauthorized personnel off the machine and in
clear sight of the operator.
Note: All tests and all adjustments must be made while the transmission oil is at normal operating
temperature.
NOTICE
Do not connect or disconnect hose fittings to or from the quick
disconnect nipples when there is pressure in the system. This will
prevent damage to the seals that are in the fitting.

2. With the transmission control lever in the PARK position, start the engine and operate the engine at low
idle.
Check the transmission lubrication pressure by using pressure tap (9). Record the pressure.
Move the pressure gauge to pressure tap (8) for the system pressure for the transmission. Run the
engine at low idle. Record the pressure.
Move the pressure gauge to pressure tap (1). Record the static pressure.
3. With the transmission control lever in the PARK position, move the pressure gauge to pressure tap (6).
Make sure that the area is clear of all personnel. Apply the service brakes and shift the transmission
control into FIRST gear. Record the pressure. Place the transmission control lever in the PARK
position.
4. With the transmission control lever in the PARK position, move the pressure gauge to pressure tap (2).
Make sure that the area is clear of all personnel. Apply the service brakes and shift the transmission
control into FIRST gear. Record the pressure. Place the transmission control lever in the PARK
position.
5. With the transmission control lever in the PARK position, move the pressure gauge to pressure tap (7).

control into REVERSE gear. Record the pressure. Place the transmission control lever in the PARK
position.
6. With the transmission control lever in the PARK position, move the pressure gauge to pressure tap (1).
Make sure that the area is clear of all personnel. Apply the service brakes and shift the transmission
control into REVERSE gear. Record the pressure. Place the transmission control lever in the PARK
position.
7. Remove all measuring tools and replace all the caps on the test ports.
If a pressure rise is noted, the solenoid and the related electrical circuit are functioning.
If a pressure rise is not noted, one of the following problems could be the cause:
a bent solenoid stem
a dirty screen or a plugged screen
a weak spring or a broken spring
a problem in the electrical circuit
Adjustments for the Transmission Clutch Pressure
If the pressure reading for the energized clutch is not within the values, recalibrate the clutch. After
recalibration, If the pressure reading is not within the values, the solenoid modulating valve for the
transmission clutch may need to be replaced or the pump pressure may need adjustment.
Note: The engagement pressure for a lockup clutch should be recalibrated whenever the engagement
pressures for the transmission clutches are recalibrated. Refer to the “Topic Torque Converter Lockup Clutch
Pressure - Test and Adjust”.
Reference: For additional information about calibrating the solenoid modulating valve for the transmission
clutches, refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, RENR8342, "773F and 775F Off-
Highway Truck/Tractor and 775F Quarry Truck Chassis Electronic Control System", "Transmission Clutch -
Calibrate" and perform the “Transmission Clutch Engagement Pressure Calibration” for the machine that is
being serviced.
Reference: For additional information about calibrating the solenoid modulating valve for the transmission
clutches, refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, RENR8342, "773F and 775F Off-
Highway Truck/Tractor and 775F Quarry Truck Chassis Electronic Control System", "Transmission Fill -
Calibrate (Using the Caterpillar Electronic Technician)" for the machine that is being serviced.
Note: Calibration for clutch engagement may be performed on an individual transmission clutch or the
lockup clutch. Fill calibration is performed on all the transmission clutches and the lockup clutch during the
calibration.
Reference: For additional information about electrical system troubleshooting, refer to the Service Manual
module Testing and Adjusting, RENR8342, "773F and 775F Off-Highway Truck/Tractor and 775F Quarry
Truck Chassis Electronic Control System", "Troubleshooting Diagnostic Codes" for the machine that is being
serviced.

(13) Adjustment screw
If the pressure for the transmission system at pressure tap (8) is not within the values in Table 2, adjust the
spring of the transmission hydraulic control relief valve. Use the following procedure.
1. Remove cover (12).
2. Turn adjustment screw (13) in the proper direction.
Turning the adjustment screw clockwise increases pump pressure. Turning the adjustment screw
counterclockwise decreases pump pressure. One full turn of the adjustment screw changes pump
pressure 160 kPa (23 psi).
3. Install cover (12).
4. Check the transmission oil pump pressure again. Make sure that the transmission oil pump pressure is
