Turkish History
After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire following World War I, Türkiye became a new country
under the rule of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. In 1923, the Republic of Türkiye was created, which put an
end to sultan rule. Atatürk made it his priority to modernize Türkiye, changing the alphabet,
providing more rights for women, and setting up a democratic government. Throughout the mid to
late 20th century, the country did experience many troubles—economically and politically. In recent
years, however, Türkiye has slowly recovered in these fields under the leadership of Recep Tayyip
Erdogan, although he faces criticisms over the manner in which he governs and secularism.
