Field notes 28/04/2025

We first visited Classic bakers just outside of the gate. The group was comprised of Anjana, Ashin, Adil,
Manisha and Vinit(me). Survey with Classic bakers went smoothly as he was co-operative. But he just
answered the questions we asked. He gave short answers to the questions. As the shop owner only
knew Malayalam, Anjana was asking the question while I was feeling up information on the Google
form. I think it was hectic for her as she was also telling me what to fill up on the form. After the Classic
bakers we proceeded to Margin free super market but Adil was not very confident in using Ashin’s
wheechair as there were many vehicles on the road. So he decided to go back to the campus. I
accompanied him till the gate while Manisha and Anjana went to the next shop. When I came back
Anjana was asking the questions while taking the notes on the notepad. She later told me that it is easier
to note down on the notepad than google form for her. The shop owner was really enthusiastic and was
giving interview level responses. He was talking with us even when there were customers in the shop.

Next the supermarket there was a saloon. Me and Anjana opened the door of the shop and went inside.
There was a worker sleeping inside. He was startled and got up, Anjana started speaking in Malayalam,
he also spoke some. Then Anjana told me that worker speaks hindi, so I can converse with him. So I
introduced myself as student of the college infront of their shop and asked if I can ask him some
questions regarding waste management. But he was not interested as this was his rest time and also he
said that he will not be able to answer most of the questions, so it will be better to come back when the
owner is in the shop.

After that me and Manisha decided to go ahead to the palace restaurant as they had some staff which
spoke hindi. But the staff was busy and said they will have some free time at the evening or the night.
While owner spoke only Malayalam. The same thing was repeated at the Five-star restaurant. Most of
the staff was busy. We were able to get hold of one the boys working there. But he said he has only
worked there for 1 month and doesn’t know much.

After getting rejected continuously three times the morale was already down. But still we hesitantly
went inside a saloon 2 minutes from the 5-star. The owner was cutting the hair of the customer, after
seeing us he came outside. He told us that he can only speak malayalam, so we decided to go back and
Ashin and Anjana with us.

While on the way back, we saw a shop that we missed. So we went inside and talked with the owner.
The owner knew hindi but it was basically a storage fascility and it did not generate any waste as the
owner said. After this we met up with Anjana and Ashin. Ashin and I went back to the barber while
Anjana and Manisha went elsewhere. The barber (Owner of the ‘International Saloon’ ) answered our
questions but he was in bit hurry as he was going to meet his girlfriend (Ashin told me later). I felt it was
difficult for Ashin to ask questions and point out answers to me in the google form.

After this we met with Anjana and Manisha. They had just completed the survey with owner of Kailas
Medical. On the way back we tried to survey one supermarket owner but he was not willing. After this
ordeal everyone was tired and we decided to call it a day.
