AMR WB Speech
› Introduction

› AMR-WB is a wideband codec standardized by 3GPP, and

supports 50-7000 Hz audio frequency with 16 kHz sampling
compared to 200-3400 Hz and 8 kHz used in narrowband
codecs.

› This wider speech bandwidth offers communication quality

significantly surpassing that of the PSTN in intelligibility
and naturalness, giving an experience that is equivalent to
face-to-face interaction.

AMR WB Speech/Combinations
› Description
› FAJ 121 1059, AMR WB Speech
› This feature is a conversational RAB for AMR WB (AMR wideband) coded speech
towards the circuit switched core network domain, which gives a clear improved speech
quality for mobile to mobile calls compared to AMR NB coded speech.

› FAJ 121 1060, AMR WB Speech and PS Interactive RAB combination

› This feature are the combinations of a conversational RAB for (12.65, 8.85, 6.6) kbps
AMR WB coded speech and a PS interactive RAB, with the PS radio bearers 0/0, 64/64,
64/128 and 128/64 (UL/DL).

› FAJ 121 1061, AMR WB Speech and HSDPA Interactive RAB combination
› This feature is the combinations of a conversational RAB for (12.65, 8.85, 6.6) kbps AMR
WB coded speech and an interactive RAB for HSDPA with an uplink 384 or 64 kbps bit
rate and a downlink max bit rate depending on UE capability.

Important lesson learned
› After loading and activating the AMR WB Speech feature at RNC and MSC-S/MGW, the
AMR Speech call was established successfully but with a major flaw.

› If only the AMR WB Speech feature [FAJ 121 1059] is activated and not the PS and HS
combinations [FAJ 121 1060/FAJ 121 1061], In order to establish an AMR coded call -
PS traffic has to be disabled at the UE first! This is due to the fact that the feature is
AMR WB Speech only; not AMR WB Speech and PS Int or HS combination.

› Having PS or HS enabled causes the CS blockages
