Direct Data Entry

What is a direct data entry device?

 A direct data entry device is a device capable of inputting data into a computer with little/no human
interaction
 Data collection and transfer is completed automatically
Types of direct data entry devices

Direct data entry device Advantages Disadvantages

 Fast  Magnetic stripes can get damaged

Magnetic stripe reader
 Simple to use and become unreadable
(Debit/credit cards)
 Secure (unreadable)  Reader must be in close contact

 Requires PIN input

 Secure  Potential for skimming
Chip and PIN reader
 Reduced fraud risk  High payment limits an issue for
stolen cards

 Fast transaction (no pin)

 Data wirelessly transferred  Transaction limit is smaller
RFID reader (read only)
securely  RFID signals can be
(Contactless payment)
 Retailers don't have to access read/intercepted
customer credit/debit information

 Radio waves can be

RFID reader  Very fast
blocked/jammed
(Security tags on clothes, location  Data can be sent both ways
 Tag collisions
tracking )  Bulk detection
 Possible to hack

 Limited to specific forms

Optical Mark Recognition (OMR, read  Fast processing  Cannot read handwriting
marks on exam paper in pen/pencil)  Reduced human error  Form must be completed
accurately
 Can struggle with complex layouts
Optical Character Recognition  Fast data entry  Font dependent
(OCR, text to digital data)  Accurate and less error prone  Not always 100% accurate
 Expensive

 Fast and accurate  Requires line-of-sight

Barcode reader  Low cost  Barcodes are easily damaged
(reads barcode labels)  Allows for automatic stock control  Barcodes can be swapped/altered
 Tried & trusted by consumers

 Can store more data than barcodes

 QR codes can store malicious
QR scanner  Versatile uses
code
(QR codes)  Easy to read
 Different QR code formats
 Can be encrypted
