TASK 1
The bar chart shows types of media to get daily news, by age group 2011.
Given is a bar-chart which illustrates a handful of remarkable comparisons the percentage of
people from 5 age groups using 3 different media channels to keep up with daily news in the year
2011. Overall, the two youngest groups got news via social networking, while radio was the most
commonly-used amongst the elderly and the percentage of micro-blogging users from all of the
ages was fairly slight at that time.
Regarding radio, approximately over 85% of people aged from 18 to over 65 listened to radio for
the purpose of seeking for daily news, much higher than the proportion of youngsters from 10 to
17 years old standing at 40%.
With respect to microblogging, roughly 22% of people aged 10 to 29 used micro-blogging to
find daily news in 2011, compared to a modestly-lower rate of users from 30 to over 65 years old
accounting for about 14%.
As far as social networking is concerned, the proportion of social networking users aged 10-17
was precisely equal to the proportion of those from 18 to 29 years old, each with at 80% which
was exactly two times as much as the percentage of those aged 50-64. Meanwhile, there were
50% of people aged 30 to 49 using this type of media to get daily news, twice as much as the rate
of the oldest group.

Coachers Referees Managers Analysts Broadcasters
Given is a bar-chart which illustrates a handful of remarkable comparisons in the number of
workers from two different age groups employed in 5 different sections of sports in an unknown
Australian town in 2015. Overall, more workers aged 41+ were recruited in the coaching sector,
while the managerial one was the most popular with those aged 25-40.
In greater detail, the most significant disparity in the number of workers can be seen in the
coaching section in which roughly 72 people at the age of 41+ took part, nearly 2 times as much
as that of the 25-40 age group standing at 38 people. The same difference can be witnessed in the
numbers of analysts and referees; particularly, there were approximately 65 and 42 people aged
41 and over respectively, compared to 40 and 35 those from the younger group.
As far as the others are concerned, both of the aforesaid age groups shared the nearly same
number of managers, each with at roughly 46. Noticeably, the broadcasting section was the only
one in which more younger people worked than the older group, at 30 and 14 workers
correspondingly.

Skateboarding Bike riding Watching TV Computer games Art and craft
Boys aged 5-14 Girls aged 5-14
Given is a bar-chart which illustrates a handful of remarkable comparisons in the proportion of
Australian children aged 5-14 from both genders interested in 5 different free-time activities.
Overall, watching TV is the most popular with Australian children at that age, as opposed to
skateboarding.
In greater detail, the most noticeable feature can be seen in watching TV which 100% both of
boys and girls enjoy doing during their spare time. By contrast, skateboarding is the least favorite
with both genders; more particularly, 38% boys are interested in skateboarding, almost 2 times as
much as the percentage of girls standing at merely 22%.
As far as the other activities are concerned, 75% boys and 58% girls are excited about bike
riding; meanwhile, computer games are preferred by 80% boys and 60% girls. As for art and
craft, 62% boys are fond of this form of entertainment, significantly higher than the proportion of
girls making up 33%.
The table below shows the expenditure on some consumer goods by Vietnamese people in
2020.
Units are measured in dollars for each person per year.
Food Entertainment Transport Healthcare
20-30 $1,750 $750 $240 $370
31-40 $1,750 $375 $320 $580
41-50 $1,400 $240 $295 $1,200
Given is a table which illustrates a handful of remarkable comparisons in the average amount of
money spent annually on 4 different aspects by each Vietnamese person from 3 age groups in the
year 2020. Overall, more money was paid for food by all of the surveyed age groups than the
other sectors at that time.
In greater detail, the expenditure of a person at the age of 20-30 was exactly equal to the
spending of one aged 31-40, each with at 1,750 dollars which was slightly larger than the amount
of money spent by one aged 41-50 standing at 1,400 dollars. Meanwhile, 750 dollars was
expended on entertainment by a person from the youngest group, either precisely two times or
just over three times as much as the amount of moneys paid by a person aged 31-40 and one
from the oldest group accounting for 375 and 240 dollars, respectively.
As for transport, a person from 31 to 40 years old spent 320 dollars on this sector, in comparison
with 295 dollars paid by one from the oldest group and 240 dollars paid by one from the
youngest group. Regarding healthcare, 1,200 dollars was spent by a consumer aged 41-50; in the
meantime, those aged 31-40 and 20-30 expensed 580 and 370 dollars, correspondingly.
The table shows the proportion of women in the labor force and women in management in
five countries.
Given is a table which illustrates a handful of comparisons in the percentages of women in the
labor force and women in management in five countries. Overall, Japan records the highest rate
of women in labor force, while Australia and United States share the first rank in the rate of
women in leadership positions.
Regarding the rate of women in labor force, there are 48% of Japanese women employed,
compared to 46% of American women and 20% of Egyptian women. Meanwhile, Australia and
Sri Lanka share the same proportion of women working, each with at 42%.
When it comes to managerial roles, Australia and United States have the similar percentage of
women, each with at 43% and these rates are much higher than that of Egypt accounting for
12%. In the meantime, the proportion of female managers represented 17%, and this was nearly
two times as much as that of Sri Lanka standing at only 9%.
TASK 2
The best way to solve the world’s environmental problem is to increase the cost of fuel for
cars and other vehicles. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Due to the increasing pollution in every corner of the world, some people suppose that governing
bodies should rise the price of fuel for all forms of transportation as it is the best way to mitigate
the problem. Although the given is a good approach, I strongly contend that there are many
better alternatives which could be implemented to remedy the situation.
When it comes to the effectiveness of given solution, it certainly prevents people from overusing
their private vehicles which become more and more unaffordable. That is to say, the number of
private vehicles in some particular areas could decrease significantly, which is in turns
instrumental in enhancing the air quality. However, this aforementioned approach is seemingly
inappropriate in some areas as it can cause inconveniences for a group of people and the
escalation in the cost of other goods in the market.
Therefore, I will suggest some other measures which are possible and more effective. Firstly, the
government should encourage their citizens to go by means of public transportation by
improving the infrastructure and the quality of services, rendering them more accessible and
user-friendly. As a result, people may gradually quit going by private vehicles and change to use
public ones. Secondly, making eco-friendly forms of transportation more accessible and
affordable by discounting the cost and lowering the tax can make a perfect sense for this
scenario. In Vietnam, to be best illustrated, the number of electric vehicles has been increasing
day by day thanks to their low cost, proportionate to the reduction in carbon footprint.
All in all, while increasing the price of fuel for vehicles is a good solution, I strongly believe that
the aforementioned ones are better. When it comes to pollution particularly air pollution, using
public and eco-friendly transportation is pivotal to eliminate the root causes.
Plastic shopping bags are used widely and cause many environmental problems. Some
people say they should be banned. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
No one would deny that the commonly-used plastic bags in supermarkets and shops have a
negative effect on the environment because they do not degrade and end up as litter in our cities
or oceans. However, the replacements for plastic bags also carry significant environmental risks.
That is why I think plastic bags should not be banned.
The main environmental side effect related to plastic bags is that they pollute both the land and
water. An insignificant percentage of people may reuse or recycle plastic bags, but most
ultimately litter or throw them in the trash. If they are thrown in the trash, plastic bags will wind
up in the ever-increasing number of landfills and contribute to soil pollution. The ones that are
simply tossed in the street clog drains in cities and eventually find their way to the sea and
entangle marine life. This is why many feel that plastic bags should be banned.
Despite the advantages of banning plastic bags, the solutions for plastic bags are worse than the
original problem. Most people who advocate banning plastic bags suggest paper bags (which are
biodegradable) or reusable bags that are typically made from cotton or plastic. Both of these
replacements are flawed. Paper bags require us to continue clearing forests and also carry a large
carbon footprint. Reusable bags are plagued by similar problems. Independent studies have
shown that the production of cotton and reusable plastic causes more harm to the environment
than disposable plastic bags. Coupled with the fact that reusable bags are more difficult to
recycle, their overall effect on the environment is worse.
In recapitulation, I do not think overly simplistic restrictions on plastic bags would have the
desired positive effect. Rather than thoughtlessly banning them, policy makers should come up
with a policy that balances the materials we use for bags in order to produce an overall positive
impact on the environment.
The most essential component of a person’s life is his or her time at working place, and life
turns meaningless once no job satisfaction is obtained. To what extent do you agree or
disagree?
These days, there is a big focus on job satisfaction. Some people believe that without it, their life
would be meaningless. I completely disagree with this idea because although job satisfaction is
important, I believe it is not the only thing that can bring meaning to a person’s life. In fact, I
believe there are many other things that can bring far greater meaning to a person’s life than their
career choice.
Firstly, being satisfied with your job is of some importance. Most people spend approximately 40
hours a week or more at work, and therefore it is important to have a job that brings the highest
level of satisfaction to enrich our lives. Having a job that provides meaning to a person’s life, also
brings that person a sense of purpose and fulfillment, which are two of the key ingredients for true
happiness. Those who find themselves stuck in boring, monotonous, and menial jobs for years on
end may end up developing a low sense of self-worth and suffer from somes form of mental illness,
such as depression or anxiety.
However, that is not to say that without career satisfaction you cannot have a meaningful life.
These days, many people do not have the luxury of being able to choose the career of their choice
as they may not have had the opportunity to pursue it, due to lack of education or money. These
people can still find meaning in other parts of their life, whether it be in raising their children and
taking care of their family, or even pursuing their passions and hobbies outside of work hours. For
example, someone may find the most meaning in their life by creating art, but may not be able to
make a living by doing this and therefore have to get a job that may not bring them much
satisfaction.
In conclusion, there are several other aspects of people’s lives where meaning can be found, be it
children, hobbies, or even religion. That is not to say that job satisfaction is not important, but
rather just one possible source of happiness out of many.
Smoking is a major cause of serious illness and death throughout the world today. In the
interest of public health, governments should ban cigarettes and other tobacco products.
Do you agree or disagree?
Banning tobacco products has become a controversial issue around the world. It is commonly-
thought that these products and cigarettes should be prohibited because they are the main reason
for the modern global health crisis. Although I am in the agreement with this policy, the
government should only restrict the use of tobacco in some extent due to some factors related to
economic benefits and human rights.
On the one hand, smoking is detrimental to physical and mental health for not only smokers but
also passive ones. Apart from inducing short-term relaxation benefits, smoking causes many
negative consequences and smokers are more vulnerable to dangerous and chronic diseases
related to lung and heart than non-smokers. Based on this conjecture, governments would incur a
large amount of expenses for subsidizing the failing health of smokers. With a ban in place, the
general population will get healthier and more productive at work.
On the other hand, cigarettes and tobacco products are considered as one of the most profitable
daily goods in many countries. If such products were banned completely, it would be a smash hit
directly to the global economy. Moreover, someone has his own choice of what he consumes
provided that it is licit. Thus, banning tobacco is likely to deny the human rights for smokers. It
is not mentioned that the smoker may find another way to satisfy himself when the policy comes
in reality, which can trigger worse cases than smoking.
In recapitulation, it is undeniable that smoking is extremely harmful to well-being. However,
banning should be taken more into consideration because of some adverse effects on economy
and human rights. Thus, I strongly believe that instead of offering a total smoking ban we could
take other alternatives namely raising the public awareness about smoking in a right way and in a
right place or inventing other smoking ways which are mostly harmless to the health.
Environmental protection should be the responsibility of politicians, not individuals as
individuals can do too little. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Some people think that politicians should be responsible for protecting the environment as there
is nothing much that each individual can do about this problem. In my opinion, the responsibility
to protect the environment should not fall upon politicians alone because ordinary citizens can
make a significant contribution.
Firstly, politicians can urge the government to impose new laws against actions that damage the
environment. For instance, one of the major factors leading to environmental pollution is the
overuse of plastic products, like bottles and bags, and this can be stopped if the government
issues an official ban on all companies from using plastic packaging. In addition, the rate of
deforestation can also be reduced if high-ranking bureaucrats agree to impose strict punishments,
such as long-term imprisonment and heavy fines, on those who cut down trees illegally.
However, besides introducing and enforcing new laws and regulations, I doubt that there is any
further action that politicians can take to protect the environment.
On the other hand, I believe that ordinary people, through small, everyday actions, can also
greatly contribute to protecting the environment. First, citizens in many countries, like the
Netherlands, have now shifted towards using bicycles and subway trains for their daily travel
instead of cars, which has so far helped reduce a tremendous amount of CO2 released into the
air, and improved air quality. Second, the problem of polluted oceans has also been tackled in
many places thanks to groups of young people who voluntarily spend their time cleaning up
beaches, or even diving into water to pick up trash.
In conclusion, I hold the view that politicians alone cannot deal with all environmental problems,
and therefore individuals should also make a contribution to protecting our environment.
