mix of lectures, workshops and laboratory sessions.
content)
You’ll study topics such as:
Project-based statistics, from data collection to conclusions
Statistical programming
Data manipulation, summary and visualisation
Commonly used statistical techniques and statistical modelling
Working with employers as a data analyst
Consultancy and project management skills
Learning and Students will learn through teaching in lectures and interactive practical
teaching workshops; with supervised support on collaborative projects with external
summary clients allowing students to develop as data analysts (learning by doing);
:
online using the virtual learning environment and industry standard software
platforms; and through independent study.
The learning and teaching activities in this module will specifically embed the
Hallam Model throughout.
Taught content is scaffolded and integrated with real world application to
provide authentic learning experiences and enable students to thrive
professionally. Networking with professionals in the sector will allow reflection
on their career plans, personal and professional development.
Students will engage with local partners from industrial, charitable and
government sectors to work on live data sets and solve real-world problems.
Students will learn to work effectively in groups to collaborate with employers
and staff, develop their team working and project management skills, and
individually to critically reflect and challenge their professional development
with respect to their written and oral communication skills.
Students will receive feedback in weekly tutorials and seminars, from peers
and from academic staff.
The module materials and instruction are designed to be accessible to
students with diverse backgrounds and abilities. Clear explanations, visual
aids, and real-world examples are utilized to cater to different learning styles
and ensure that all students can comprehend and engage with the content.
The module also emphasises collaborative learning, encouraging students to
work in diverse teams, where they can learn from each other's unique
perspectives and experiences.
Inclusive assessment methods are employed, considering multiple ways for
students to demonstrate their understanding of data analysis, such as written
reports, presentations, or practical applications.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, you will be able to:
Demonstrate a reasonable understanding of appropriate mathematical and statistical knowledge
and a reasonable level of skill in calculation and manipulation within this body of knowledge;
Develop, sustain and evaluate logical arguments and analysis, identifying assumptions made and
conclusions drawn and, where appropriate, acknowledging the degree of uncertainty associated
with conclusions;
Develop digital capabilities, including retrieval of information and assessment of its veracity, and
the ability to employ digital tools to support mathematical reasoning and communication;
