CHAPTER 2 – Christ an Educator
SUMMARY
The human mind is susceptible to the highest cultivation, and a life devoted to God
should not be a life of ignorance. Many argue that Jesus chose uneducated fishermen to preach
His gospel, but He knew the hearts of all and chose humble men to educate them to carry
forward His great work on earth. Christ was the light of the world, and his teachings were of
mighty significance, as they were to revolutionize the world.
Jesus did not despise education, but the highest culture of the mind, sanctified through
love and fear of God, receives His fullest approval. The humble men chosen by Christ were with
Him for three years, subject to the refining influence of the Majesty of Heaven. They were the
greatest educators the world ever knew.
God accepts the youth with their talent and wealth of affection if they consecrate
themselves to Him. They can reach the highest point of intellectual greatness and, if balanced by
religious principle, carry forward the work Christ came from Heaven to accomplish. Students at
our College have valuable privileges, such as obtaining knowledge of the sciences and learning
to cultivate virtues. Perseverance in the acquisition of knowledge, controlled by the fear and love
of God, will give them an increased power for good in this life, and those who make the most of
their privileges will take these valuable acquisitions with them into the future life.
LESSONS I LEARNED
I learned that teaching the lessons about God or studying the lessons about God is not
only for those people who are educated but also for those people who are humble and have the
willingness of the mind to learn, understand and accept the teaching of God and I believed that
gaining knowledge and turned it to wisdom is the best thing that a Christian could do.
Being a Christian, I also learned from this chapter that our lives must be not a life of
ignorance that is God gave us free will, to think, to decide, to have own opinion, but it is also our
choice to believe it and apply it to our life and if we choose the wrong decision then we will
suffer from its consequences.
Lastly, I learned that we must be contented of what we are and what we have it is our role
to nurture it and develop them, every human being in this world has purpose and it is not all the
same, each purpose is unique for us, “I will not flow along my narrow channel because I am not
a mighty river. The spires of grass do not refuse to grow because they are not forest trees. The
lamp does not refuse to give its little light because it is not a star. The moon and stars do not
refuse to shine because they have not the brilliant light of the sun. Every person has his own
peculiar sphere and vocation.” This thing caught my attention while reading that we must not
envy others because it is their purpose.
HOW I CAN APPLY THOSE LESSONS
First, be susceptible to teaching about God and find your own purpose in order to have a
life that is not living in ignorance, and also, we need to gain and gather knowledge and turn it to
wisdom. Be contented about what we have and what we look, try to appreciate yourself and love
yourself and remember that we are part of the creations of God that everyone is important and
has a purpose.
Second, don’t be full of yourself and always be humble because I believed that those
people who are humble, they are the people that God is lifting while the people who are full of
themselves are people that God is dragging down.
Lastly, always choose to be kind and open for all people who are preaching and sharing
information so that we can obtain knowledge, and develop our understanding skill, listening
skill, etc.
CHAPTER 12 – Courtship and Marriage
SUMMARY
In today's world of peril and corruption, young people face numerous trials and
temptations, often focusing on courtship and marriage. They need an unerring counselor and
infallible guide from the word of God to avoid making grave mistakes that may mar their
happiness and that of others. Many young people are impetuous and headstrong, but have not
heeded the wise counsel of the word of God.
The Bible presents a perfect standard of character, setting forth the duties of both young
and old. It instructs the young to love and cherish their parents, but also to respect the judgment
of men of experience with whom they are connected in the church. A young man who enjoys
society and wins the friendship of a young lady unbeknown to her parents does not act a noble
Christian part toward her or her parents. Instead, he acts a part that is not frank and open, and
proves untrue to those who love them and try to be faithful guardians over them.
The Bible condemns every species of dishonesty and demands right-doing under all
circumstances. If a young man makes the Bible his guide, he needs not to mistake the path of
duty and safety. The blessed book will teach him to preserve his integrity of character, be
truthful, and practice no deception.
The curse of God rests upon many of the ill-timed, inappropriate connections that are
formed in this age of the world. The requirements of the Bible are not halfway injunctions; they
demand perfect purity of thought, word, and deed. The young should make it a business to
consult its pages and heed its counsels, as sad mistakes are always made in departing from its
precepts.
In conclusion, the Bible is a valuable tool for young people to navigate their lives and
make wise decisions.
LESSONS I LEARNED
I thought at first by doing a lot of mistakes makes me stronger and wiser and that mistake
will not be repeated but I learned from this chapter that Bible served as a guide and without
guide there is no development or improvements because bible is all about fact and it will serve as
a proof or evidence that we could apply to ourselves in order to make it better. A lot of young
people are following wrong path meaning to say they have no guide such as the Bible and it will
lead to a sin.
Also, I learned that young people are easily tempted by the sins such as lust, thief,
blasphemy, etc. They thought it was fine doing it because no one thought them about the sins so
it is necessarily for us to have a guide such as Bible, especially in every family because inside
the family it starts to nurture our skills and behavior.
Lastly, I learned that having a Bible that served as our guide we can avoid doing sins and
save our integrity of character, and not easily tempted by the sins surround us.
HOW I CAN APPLY THOSE LESSONS
The first thing to do to apply those lessons to our life is have a Bible that served as a
guide for us in order to avoid making some mistakes. Also, Bible will teach us what is wrong and
what is right and good and by having it and read it daily it will improve our personality, behavior
and thinking, ad making ourself a good example to the next generations.
Next step is for the parents it is their part or role to observe and be a good example to
their children in order to make their child choose the right path and follow the teaching of God.
In this generations a lot of practices are wrong such as teaching sex education by using condoms
or pills to prevent getting pregnant and it will just make young people curious about sex and they
think it is safe as long as the have protect and doing sex is a sacred thing that only meant for
husband and wife not for girlfriend and boyfriend, doing sex is meant to make child and using
condom you are disobeying the God’s law.
CHAPTER 17 – Parental Responsibility
SUMMARY
In this text, the author discusses the dangers of intemperance and the importance of
parents in educating their children. Satan is working to lead men to indulge in appetite, gratify
inclination, and spend their days in heedless folly. He presents attractions in a life of selfish
enjoyment and sensual indulgence, sapping the energies of both mind and body. Overcoming this
will place one on Satan's ground, where they will be tempted and controlled at pleasure by the
enemy of all righteousness.
Parents need to be impressed with their obligation to give their children well-developed
characters who will have moral power to resist temptation and whose life will be an honor to
God and a blessing to their fellow men. Mothers should improve every opportunity to educate
their children for usefulness. The work of the mother is sacred and important, as she should teach
her children habits of self-denial and self-control from the cradle up.
Many mothers who deplore intemperance do not look deep enough to see the cause,
which often lies at the home table. Many parents indulge in rich and highly seasoned food, which
tempts the appetite and encourages overeating. This leads to unhealthy habits and weakens the
ability to resist other appetites and passions.
The author emphasizes that the world needs mothers who will teach their children to
control passion, deny appetite, and overcome selfishness. Women should fill the position of God
originally designed for them, as their husband's equal.
The position of a woman in her family is more sacred than that of a king upon his throne.
Her great work is to make her life an example for her children, storing their minds with useful
knowledge and leading them to self-sacrificing labor for the good of others. Christian mothers
should realize their responsibility and live to glorify God.
Christ humbled Himself to serve His family and teach His disciples about humility and
self-sacrifice for others. He taught them that His kingdom is not a worldly one, but a kingdom of
humbleness and self-sacrifice. Mothers should focus on teaching their children to adhere to
temperance principles in eating and drinking. Parents should guard their children's physical and
moral constitutions, and should avoid using stimulants or narcotics. A healthy state of mind
depends on the normal condition of vital forces, and every true Christian should have control
over their appetites and passions. The indulgence of appetite and passion blunts the effect of
truth on the heart, making it impossible for the spirit and power of the truth to sanctify a person.
LESSONS I LEARNED
The first thing that I learned from this chapter is the responsibility of the parents or role
of the parents to their child’s life is very important, because it will reflect in the future on how
their child was raised. Also, I noticed that how about those family who don’t have a mother
figure? So, I suggest that even you are a father you should make yourself the role model for your
child and teach him/her to control their passion, eagerness, appetite and so on, to make the well-
mannered, humble and know how to self-sacrifice.
Second, the things that parents should teach to their child, like not the worldly things,
because Jesus’s teaching His kingdom is not a worldly one, but a kingdom of humbleness and
self-sacrifice. Parents should choose the right teaching and what is good for their children in
order to make them the perfect generations that God expected.
Lastly, many parents indulge in rich and highly seasoned food, which tempts the appetite
and encourages overeating. This leads to unhealthy habits and weakens the ability to resist other
appetites and passions. The parents should teach their child to manage their habits.
HOW I CAN APPLY THOSE LESSONS
Control myself about over eating, what I mean to say is learn to be contented and have
self-control at all times, don’t be too greedy. Being greedy makes us a sinner, and a sin makes us
imperfect and not acceptable to the kingdom of God.
Follow the right thing that our parents told us and teach us, because it is for our own good
to makes us a better person, well-mannered and know how to self-sacrifice. No parents want
their children became miserable and evil, sometimes our parents are being strict but it is for our
safety and for own good.
CHAPTER 22 - The Teacher of Truth the Only Safe Educator
SUMMARY
There are two classes of educators in the world: those who God makes channels of light
and those who Satan uses as his agents to teach evil. The first class contemplates the character of
God and increases in the knowledge of Jesus, while the second class is in alliance with the prince
of darkness.
There is a great need to elevate the standard of righteousness in our schools and give
instruction after God's order. If Christ enters our institutions for the education of the youth, He
would cleanse them, banishing many defiling influences. Many of the books that the youth study
would be expelled, and their places would be filled with others that would inculcate substantial
knowledge and abound in sentiments that might be treasured in the heart.
The Lord bestowed upon these men whom the world admires intellectual gifts, but they
did not use them to the glory of God. They separated themselves from Him and retained many of
the precious gems of thought which He had given them. They placed these in a framework of
error to give luster to their own human sentiments, making attractive the utterances inspired by
the prince of evil.
Satan has ascribed all the evils to which flesh is heir and represented God as a God who
delights in the sufferings of His creatures. He originated the doctrine of eternal torment as a
punishment for sin, leading men into infidelity and rebellion, distracting souls, and dethroning
human reason. Truth looked down from heaven and saw not the reflection of her image, as dense
clouds of moral darkness enveloped the world.
The Son of God, Jesus Christ, came to earth to reveal the character of the Father to men,
teaching them the importance of prayer, repentance, confession, and the abandonment of sin. He
emphasized the paternal love of the Father, who gave His only-begotten Son to ensure eternal
life for those who believe in Him. Jesus taught them honesty, forbearance, mercy, and
compassion, urging them to love not only those who loved them but also those who hated them.
He emphasized the importance of a connection with Christ, as He is one with the Father. This
divine love enters the soul, inspiring gratitude and freeing it from spiritual feebleness, pride,
vanity, and selfishness. The life of Christ was charged with a divine message of the love of God,
and His life was filled with compassion, grace, humility, truth, and love. The love of Christ is so
profound that it is beyond words to describe. The themes of redemption are momentous, and only
spiritually minded individuals can discern their depth and significance.
LESSONS I LEARNED
The chapter begins by establishing that true education is rooted in truth. It emphasizes
that knowledge should not simply be for the sake of acquiring facts, but for understanding deeper
realities and principles that govern life. In a world increasingly filled with misinformation and
superficial knowledge, the idea of seeking truth above all else serves as the foundation for an
education that has lasting value. Education, in this sense, is not just the learning of external
information, but an inner process of uncovering and aligning with what is real and meaningful.
A core lesson from this chapter is the integration of the spiritual aspect of learning. The
"Teacher of Truth" is not merely a physical instructor but also a spiritual guide who helps
learners discover their higher purpose. True education involves an awakening to deeper truths
that go beyond the material world, helping individuals find peace, clarity, and purpose. As such,
the chapter argues that education is not merely an intellectual pursuit but a spiritual journey that
connects the mind with the soul.
A significant part of the chapter is devoted to warning against false or misleading
education. The author suggests that not all teachings are beneficial, and many ideas in the world
can lead individuals astray. The "Teacher of Truth" serves as a safeguard, helping to steer
learners away from harmful ideologies that can distort their understanding and lead them down
destructive paths. In this context, the chapter serves as a reminder that education should never
merely serve an agenda or be used for manipulation, but rather be rooted in a commitment to
what is truly beneficial for the individual and society.
HOW I CAN APPLY THOSE LESSONS
I would first need to evaluate my own approach to learning. Often, we are taught to focus
on memorizing facts or passing exams. However, to truly embody the lesson of seeking truth, I
would aim to go beyond surface-level knowledge and seek a deeper understanding of the
subjects I study. This means not only learning the “what” of a subject but also seeking to
understand the “why” and “how”—the underlying principles and truths that shape the subject
matter.
For example, in studying history, instead of merely memorizing dates and events, I would seek to
understand the broader context and the human experiences behind those events. I could research
multiple perspectives and critically engage with different sources of information, thereby gaining
a more holistic view of the past. This approach can be applied across all subjects, ensuring that
learning is not just about facts, but about developing a deeper understanding of the world around
us.
CHAPTER 30 - The Best Education and Its Purpose
SUMMARY
The best education for children and youth is one that closely relates to their future,
immortal life. This education should be provided by godly parents, devoted teachers, and the
church, with the goal of preparing them to become zealous missionaries for both home and
foreign fields. The youth should be educated in the truths of the Bible, becoming pillars in the
church and champions for truth. They should be trained to be agents for God, messengers of
mercy, and blessings to those ready to perish.
The schools established by the church should be of a higher order, focusing on practical
Christianity and the Bible as the highest textbook. There is a great demand for Christian teachers
and medical missionaries worldwide, and there should be open doors for those who can do good
to body and soul, presenting the precious light of truth.
Submitting ourselves to God offers great advantages, as it unites us to One who is mighty
to save. Connected with the Lord God of Israel, we will have power from above to overcome evil
and find access to the hearts of men. By understanding the favor and love of God in the heart, the
youth will realize the value of their blood-bought privileges and strive to increase their talents to
use in the Master's service.
In this age of sin and crime, the only safety for our youth is having a living connection
with God. They must learn how to seek God, be filled with His Holy Spirit, and act as though
they realized that the whole host of heaven was looking upon them.
The author expresses concern about the prostitution of noble powers to Satan, leading to
corruption, crime, embezzlements, and extortions. They argue that Jesus has ransomed these
individuals from Satan's bonds, but they still refuse to live a life of obedience and attain
everlasting life. The author argues that those who believe in Christ as their personal Savior have
the promise of eternal glories and a better life. They urge people to choose the heavenly gift, as
their allegiance is due to God, and to strive towards the mark for the prize of their high calling in
Christ Jesus.
LESSONS I LEARNED
One of the primary lessons in this chapter is that education should be centered on the
development of a person's character. The best education does not focus solely on intellectual
achievements or technical skills; it also emphasizes cultivating virtues such as integrity,
compassion, and responsibility. The goal is to develop well-rounded individuals who not only
possess knowledge but also embody qualities that contribute to the betterment of society.
Another important lesson from the chapter is the idea that the best education is a lifelong
journey. True education doesn’t stop at graduation or the acquisition of a degree; it is an ongoing
process of learning, growth, and self-improvement. The purpose of education is to inspire
individuals to continue seeking knowledge, wisdom, and understanding throughout their lives,
regardless of age or circumstance.
Finally, the chapter suggests that the best education is one that also nurtures the spiritual
aspect of the individual. True education involves more than just intellectual growth; it also
includes the cultivation of inner peace, self-awareness, and connection to something greater than
oneself. This spiritual fulfillment may be achieved through reflection, meditation, or a deeper
understanding of one’s purpose in life.
HOW I CAN APPLY THOSE LESSONS
To apply this lesson in my own life, I could prioritize learning experiences that challenge
and strengthen my moral and ethical values. This could involve reflecting on how the knowledge
I gain aligns with principles such as honesty, empathy, and justice. In academic or professional
settings, I could aim to make choices that demonstrate these values, ensuring that my education
is not only about gaining information but also about becoming a better person.
To incorporate this lesson into my life, I could adopt a mindset that views education as a
continuous pursuit. Whether through formal study, reading, engaging in intellectual discussions,
or personal reflection, I can remain committed to learning new things and deepening my
understanding of the world. Additionally, I could encourage others to do the same, fostering a
community of lifelong learners who are dedicated to personal and collective growth.
To apply this lesson, I could dedicate time to nurturing my spiritual well-being alongside
my intellectual development. This might involve practices such as mindfulness, meditation, or
prayer, which help me cultivate a sense of inner peace and alignment with higher principles.
Additionally, I could explore spiritual teachings that offer wisdom and guidance on how to live a
more meaningful life. By balancing my intellectual and spiritual growth, I can strive for a more
holistic education that nourishes both my mind and soul.
