REPORT ON CABBAGE PRODUCTION
(HYBRID GLORIA)
INTRODUCTION
Cabbage is a cool-season vegetable that grow in many parts of the world. It’s are member of
Brassicaceae family, Cabbage is good source of vitamin A, C and K as well as fiber it's also low
in calories and fats.
NURSERY BED PREPARATION
ON date 2/Feb/2025
I allocated a nursery bed in the green house. This was to avoid the loosing much water from the
nursery bed through evaporation. I started by digging the land using jembe , add compost or well
-rotted manure to , raised the bed and create small drills for sowing the seeds. Place the Gloria
seeds sparingly then cover the seeds with slightly soil. And water the seed bed gently using
watering cane.
LAND PREPARATION
I choose the area of land which was 4m by 4 m. Clear the land using panga and slasher. After
clearing up the land, tractor plough the land to improve drainage. Using jembe to do harrowing
to split into fine tilt add manure and incorporate with soil and allow it to decompose for two
weeks to improve the soil nutrients. This was done on date 28/Feb/2025
TRANSPLANTING THE SEEDLINGS
On 13 / March/2025 this is the date that I did transplanting. This is after three weeks. The
seedlings moved from the nursery bed to the main farm. Seedlings Which are strong are the ones
that are transplanted to the main farm using a spacing of 45 cm by 60 cm. With a shallow depth
of 3 to 4 cm. Transplanting the seedlings when its roots are compact with the soil from the
nursery bed. After transplanting the seedlings. I place a mulching then water the planted
seedlings. This mulching is to avoid loss water from the soil through evaporation.
FIELD MANAGEMENT PRACTICES
Watering: watering is done in the morning and in the evening twice a day. Weeds control: using
jembe to digging out all the weed or you can use chemical weed control method to reduce
competition for nutrients and water last option you may use hand picking but it somehow slow
Pests and diseases management
Regularly inspect the plants for pests such as cabbage months and aphids. Utilize a combination
of cultural, biological and chemical to control pests and diseases like planting companions’
plants like merigolds can dater pests and introduce natural predators can also help control pests
and popular.
Fertilizer application
Apply fertilizers based on the soil test recommendation to meet the crop nutrients cabbage.
Typically requires nitrogen (150-200) kg/phosphorus (80-120) kg/ha and potassium (180-250)
kg/ha, calcium (110-150) kg/ha and magnesium (20-40) kg/ha.
Harvesting:
Harvesting cabbage is done when the heads of the cabbage are firm and reach the desired size.
Use sharp tools to cut the head clearly minimizing damage to the plants around.
Marketing
Send your cabbage to the market while fresh so that it will get more customers and people will
buy them very first compared to the other cabbages that a not fresh sell then 150 to 200 each
according to the size and its weight.
Conclusion
Effective field management is essential for successful Cabbage cultivation encompassing site
selection, soil preparation, planting, irrigation, pests and diseases control and crop rotation. By
implementing those practice, you can enhance the growth yields and quality of your cabbage
leading to a successful harvest.
Recommendations
Cabbage plantation should be planted in a large scale and cabbage plantation or cultivation one
should consider the following before planting the cabbage: Soil pH, fertilizer, water accessibility,
transplanting e.g. spacing and pests and diseases control management.
