Qigong Techniques for Constipation Relief

The document discusses the treatment of constipation and hypochondriac pain, outlining causes, symptoms, and self-treatment methods. It identifies six common causes of constipation, including deficiency and Qi stagnation, and suggests Qigong exercises and specific acupressure points for relief. For hypochondriac pain, it emphasizes the relationship with liver health and recommends similar self-treatment techniques and Qi emission practices.

5.7 Constlpatlon
Constiparion may be regarded as a single disease oras a complica-
tion of other diseases. There are six common causes of conscipacion:
deficiency, excess, wind, cold, Qi sragnation, and heat. Deficiency
implies a Y,,ng or Yritdeficiency of rhe lowerjiao (Xiajiao). If deficien-
cy of Ya-ng occurs, Y,i,-Qi may scagnate and fail to circulate. If deficien-
cy of Yrn occurs, secretion of the body fluid may become imbalanced
giving rise co dryness in che inc:escines. Excess refers to excess syndrome
of the sromach, which causes consriparion through poor food digesrion.
Wind implies an unbalanced circulation sysrem, which cannot easily
eliminate waste. Cold implies the accumulation of pachogenic cold,
which impairs rhe funcrional acrivities of Qi. Qi stagnation implies the
energetk impairmenc of Qi. Hear refers co rhe heac chat hinders che
secretion of the body fluid.
Symptoms. Symptoms of constipation are usually dry and hard
srool, prolonged duration or infrequency of defecation and difficulry in
defecation chough che parient has srrong desire co defecace. Infrequency
of defecacion usually means every 3-5 days or even 6-7 days. Clear
urine, dry srool, and difficulty in defecarion are usually found among
parienrs wirh consriparion due ro cold and deficiency. Dark urine and
preference for cold food are seen arnong parienrs with consripation due
to excess and heat. Cough, difficulry in brearhing, cold extremiries,
fullness and discenrion of rhe abdomen and difficulry in defecation are
found arnong parienrs with consripation due to wind and cold.
Belching, depression in the chest and abdomen, and fullness and
discention in rhe chesr and hypochondrium are found among patienrs
with consriparion due to Qi sragnarion.
1. Self-Treatment wid, Qigong Exerciae. Practice Auromatic
Qi Circulacion Exercise wich an emphasis on clockwise turn-
ing. Abdominal Exercise may also be used.
Patients with constipation due to excess, heat, deficiency, or
cold should also practice Rubbing Z6ongtP4n and "Hu"
described in Spleen Regulation Exercise.
2. Treattnent with Outgoing Qi. Press and knead the points
Dac,óang1.bu(U.B. 25), S.b,·111.bu(U.B. 23), C,hao(U.B. 32) and
the eight-/iao points (on the sacrum) to induce movement in
the back (S.bu) poinrs. Then, push Qiji,g11, the seven-segment
bone, SO rimes.

5.8 Hypochondrlac Paln

The cause of hypochondriac pain was clearly explained in Ti,, Y,,//ow
Emperorí Canon o//111,,,,,,,/ Af,dicin, (Hua11g Di N,iJing) which says,
"Pain occurs below che hypochondrium when pachogenic faccors invade
the li ver... Though hypochondriac pain may also be caused by Qi
sragnarion, accumularion, channel blockage, phlegm srasis, deficiency
and excess, ir is always relaced to rhe li ver and is commonly seen among
patiencs with hyperactivity of li ver Ytr11g or sragnarion of che liver Qi.
Sympioms. Hypochondriac pain on one side is more common chan
on boch sides. Severe pain, cough, and difficulcy in breaching are seen
among patients with excess syndrome. When patients possess excessive
fire in rhe liver one may see hypochondriac pain on boch sides, a cauc
pulse, and a biccer rasre in rhe mouch. Weak pulse, dry chroar, poor
appetite, and dull or sringing pain are found among paciencs with
deficiency syndromes, including insufficiency of liver and kidney >711.
1. Self-Treatment witb Qigoog J!urcile. Practice of Massaging
che Hypochondrium and "Xu·· of che Liver Regulation Exercise
is beneficial for paciencs wich excess syndrome. Taking Black,
which is included in Kidney Regularion Exercise, is beneficial
to paciencs wich deficiency syndrome. Chest Hypochondrium
Exercise will also help alleviate this condition.
2. Treatment witb Outgoing Qi. Conducr digital tapping,
pressing, and kneading on the points Ta11z/,qng (Ren 17), Qi,,,,,,
(Liv 14), Z/Ja11gmm(Liv 13), Ga11,hu(U.B. 18), Gu/Ju(U.B.

break chrough rhem. This will also promore rhe flow of Qi and
the circulation of blood in the Li ver Channel.
Emit Qi using Fiar Palm gescure and pushing-pulling-leading
manipulation towards che painful region for a period of 11 or

manipulation, to flow downward along the Liver Channel. Tap

rhe poinc G11411y11411 (Ren 4) and knead rhe poinc S/Jm,/Ju (U.B.

manipulacion coward the lower abdomen, with che point
G11anyuan (Ren 4) as the center, for a period of 8 or 16 normal
respirations.
