Introduction & Tips
Welcome to our series of levelled reading workbooks. Each workbook contains several
texts. Each text is followed by exercises designed to reinforce literacy skills including
reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling and writing.
The books include both fiction and non-fiction passages and explore a wide range of
topics in social studies, nature, history, science and more.
Our readers are “leveled” from A to Z based on factors related to text complexity such
as vocabulary, average word size, sentence lengths, amount of repetitiveness, types of
sentence structures and subject matter complexity.
Early reading levels use simple words, short sentences, big fonts and a lot of repetition.
Each successive level introduces a greater reading challenge. Stories relate to topics
young children are familiar with.

Some tips on using our leveled readers
• Review the vocabulary words on the first page of each story with your student.
Ask your child to read these words and talk about what they mean.
• Ask younger students to read the stories out loud and use their finger to point to
words as they read from left to right. Help them as needed.
• Ask younger students to also read the directions of the exercises out loud.
Remind them to use complete sentences when answering.
• Ask older students to look up words they don’t know in a dictionary.
• Point out punctuation; for example, when there is an exclamation mark ask
them to reread the sentence using more enthusiasm.
• Review your student’s work and guide him or her through any answers that are
not correct.
• Discuss the stories, the characters, the topics, the settings, the pictures –
anything about the text to make it more interesting, relevant or fun.
• Monitor your student’s progress and adjust reading levels as needed.
• Keep the reading fun!

Real Soup
On Saturday morning, my mom asked me to
help her make some tomato soup.
“Sure,” I said. I walked over to the cupboard
and started looking through the tin cans.
“What are you doing?” asked my mom.
“I’m looking for the tomato soup,” I replied.
“Well, it doesn’t come in a can,”
she said, looking at me.
“It does when I make it
with Dad,” I informed
her.

Mom laughed. “Let’s make real
tomato soup. Can you guess
what the most important
ingredient is?”
I thought about this. It
sounded like a trick question,
and my mom could be very
tricky. Still, I couldn’t think of anything else, so I
said, “Tomato?”
“Bingo!” my mom exclaimed. “Get some
tomatoes out of the fridge. Also get
some carrots, onions and garlic.”
I got everything out of the
fridge. Together we sliced.
Together we diced.
Together we made
the soup.

When it was all done, I took the first spoonful. It
was really good.
After lunch, my mom told me I could have some
ice cream. I did want ice cream, but I wanted
real ice cream. Not stuff out of a tub!
I went to the fridge and took out some ice and
some cream.
My mom looked at me and said, “Good luck .”

The Seasons
We have four seasons. They are spring, summer,
fall and winter. A lot of changes happen when
we begin a new season. I wonder what your
favorite season is?
In the spring, we get lots of rain and the
weather becomes warmer. Sometimes it is cool
in the morning, and you need a jacket. You
may need an umbrella,
too! Then it warms up in
the afternoon. As the
snow melts, you can ride
your bike, play catch, or
fly a kite. What do you
like to do in the spring?
[Link] © K5 Learning 2019 10
Level H Reader
In the summer, the weather is
hot. You can wear shorts,
t-shirts, and sandals. You may
need a hat to protect your skin
from the sun. In the hot
weather, you can go swimming. Have you ever
run through a sprinkler to cool down?
In the fall, the weather gets a little cooler , and
you may need to wear your jacket again. The
leaves begin to change color, and it is probably
the best time of the year to walk in the woods.
Do you know what also happens in the fall? It’s
time to go back to school!
[Link] © K5 Learning 2019 11
Level H Reader
When winter is here, it’s time to get out your
hat, gloves, coat, and snow pants. We have
many snowy days in the winter. The weather is
good for sledding, ice skating, and making
snowmen. Do you like to play in the snow?

Silly Lilly
Lilly loves rhyming words. She tries to use rhymes
in her sentences all the time.
Lilly also loves to read, but she only wants to
read rhyming words. It drives her teachers and
her parents wild.
“Lilly, that’s silly! You're missing out on so many
good books,” her mom told her.

“Mom, look at this book,” Lilly said.
“It is all about a fish with a wish.”
“That looks like a great book. I

others, too. What about
this book about a pet
cat? Or this one about a
frog?” suggested Lilly’s
mom.
“I don't want to read about a cat on a mat or a
toad by a road!” Lilly replied.
Then, she picked up another book. “I can read
this text next! I will read the story, and I'll be in
my glory!” she told her mom.
Lilly began taking more books off the shelf and
piling them up.

my silly child?” She stopped and began

Silly Lilly grinned. She said, “Stay calm, mom,

Jeremy’s Houseboat
Jeremy lives on a boat. His home is on the
water, but it’s not just a boat. It’s a house that
floats. It’s called a houseboat.
Houseboats are just like normal houses in many
ways. Jeremy has his own bedroom. The
houseboat has a kitchen, a bathroom and a
living room. All the rooms are smaller than in a
normal house, though.

Jeremy has no yard to play in,
but he does have a play area
on the deck of the boat. He

There are things you can do on
Jeremy’s houseboat that you
can’t do in a normal house.
Jeremy can fish from his
house. He loves to fish.
Jeremy has a small rowing boat. He uses it to
row to land. Rowing the boat makes Jeremy
feel like he is driving his own car.
Jeremy doesn’t go to a normal school. He does
his school work on a computer. Jeremy’s friends
also live on houseboats. They love to fish
together.

everybody could live in a houseboat all the

holiday. Would you like to go on a houseboat
for your next holiday?

The New Principal
Macy and her family had a great time at the
school fair. There were games, cotton candy,
and even a dunk tank.
The fair had prizes, and Macy won the best

joined their game. The morning flew by!
When it was time for recess, Macy made her
next big announcement. She told everyone that
recess would be an extra ten minutes! She
could hear all the kids cheering.
In the afternoon, Macy played on

very odd day.
The day started when he woke up and looked
around his room. A tree was
growing up from the floor by his
bed! Up in the tree was a monkey
wearing a purple cowboy hat.
The monkey asked Rob, “Do you
want a banana?”
Rob didn't want a banana; he wanted
pancakes, so he went down to the kitchen.
Rob's mom was there. He told her about the

“Oh, yes, do you like it?” said his mom. “ If you
do, I will let you eat it for lunch!”
Everything in the house was too goofy, so Rob
ate his pancakes quickly and went to school.
There, he saw all the kids

“I’m so bored,” Cohen said.
Then Trent had an idea.

he said to his brother. He told Cohen that he

“Use this to brush your teeth,”

All Kinds of Puppets
Have you ever seen a puppet show? Perhaps
you’ve seen “The Muppet Show” or “Sesame
Street” on TV? They are both puppet shows.
Puppet shows are fun to watch. A person hides
behind the stage and moves the puppets’ arms,
legs, and mouth. This person speaks for the
puppets. This brings the puppets
to life.
Puppets look like dolls that move.
Sometimes the puppets have
strings on them. These strings
help make the puppets move.

Some puppets are worn over the
hand, like a glove. Your
thumb and little finger
become the arms of the puppet.
These are called hand puppets.
Other puppets have sticks
supporting their arms and legs.
When you move the sticks, it looks like the arms
and legs are moving.
Sometimes puppets are made from socks. A
person puts his or her hand
into the sock. They move
their fingers and
thumb to make the
puppets move and
speak. Try it with one
of your own socks!

Funhouse Mirrors
Pablo and his sister Rosa were at the carnival.
Rosa wanted to visit the funhouse mirrors.
When Rosa looked into a mirror, she started to
cry.
“What’s wrong?” asked Pablo.
Rosa pointed to her reflection
in the mirror. Rosa looked so
short and funny! She didn’t
like that at all.
We see our real reflections in
mirrors when they reflect light
straight back. To do this,
mirrors must be flat.
[Link] © K5 Learning 2019 84

Funhouse mirrors are not flat. This means they
do not reflect light straight back. They reflect
light at different angles. This is why we see
ourselves as different shapes.
The mirror Rosa was looking in had a bulge in it.
Reflections from the bulge made her look
shorter and wider than she was. When you look
into the back of a metal spoon, you see the
same kind of reflection. Can you see how big
and wide your cheeks are?

How a Submarine Works
Have you ever wondered how a submarine
works? How can a submarine dive under water?
How can it float back to the surface?
Let’s try a little experiment. First, fill a bucket
with water. Then grab a mug. Turn the mug
upside down. Now try to push the
empty mug into the bucket of
water.
Do you find it hard to press
the mug down? What
happens when you release
the mug? Does it
float back to the
top?
[Link] © K5 Learning 2019 96
Level H Reader
The mug floats back up because air is lighter
than water. The air trapped inside the mug
makes the mug lighter than water. The mug
floats because of the air trapped inside it.
That is how a submarine works. A submarine has
huge tanks called ballast tanks. When the tanks
are full of air the submarine floats. The same
thing happens when we are swimming and we
fill our lungs with air.
Can you think of how you’d make a submarine
dive under the water? What would make the
submarine heavy? You would
have to fill the ballast
tanks with something.
What would you fill them
with? What is all around
the submarine?
[Link] © K5 Learning 2019 97
Level H Reader
Water! To make the submarine dive into the
ocean, you fill the ballast tanks with water.
Now, the submarine will sink below the surface.
When it is time to go back up, you just pump
the water out of the tanks. The tanks will then
be filled with air again. The submarine will be
light and will float to the surface. A submarine
can go up and down just like that.

exciting! He got to spend time exploring the
moon. He picked up moon rocks to bring back
with him. He took lots of pictures. Today, his
footsteps are still on the moon!
Neil became very famous after he walked on

The Assembly Line
A long time ago, a fellow named Henry Ford
spent many weeks to make one car, all by
himself.
This is too slow! he thought. I need a better way
to make cars.
Henry got his friends to help. They made a long
line. One person put on the wheels. Another
person added the seats. One man put the doors
on the car. A different man did the windows. It
was like putting together a jigsaw puzzle.

After a while, the man putting on the wheels
became very fast at putting on wheels.
Everyone on the long line became very good at
their jobs. Together, they could make cars very
quickly. The long line of working men was called
an “assembly line.”
Assembly lines made it faster and cheaper to
build cars. Henry Ford made lots of cars. The
only color, though, was black. He said “ You can
have any color - as long as it is black!”
Now people use assembly lines to make all sorts
of different things
quickly and
cheaply and in
many different
colors.
