a liquid. Time taken to cool from 40°C to 32°C in the two cases is 4 mins
and 3 mins respectively. The mass of water is 25 g and that of liquid is
30 g.
i. Calculate the rate of heat lost by water and calorimeter.
ii. Calculate the rate of heat lost by liquid and calorimeter.
iii. Calculate the specific heat of the liquid. (The specific heat of

16. a. A student claimed that thermometers are useless because a thermometer
always registers its own temperature. How would you respond? [2]
b. A copper vessel with a volume of exactly 100m3 at a temperature of
15oC is filled with glycerin. If the temperature rises to 25oC, how much
glycerin will spill out? [Given: for copper 16.7 × 10-6/°C, for glycerin

a. You are looking to buy a small piece of land in Kathmandu. The price
is “only” Rs 60,000 per square meter. The land title says the dimensions
are 20m×30m. By how much would the total price change if you
measured the parcel with a steel tape measure on a day when the
temperature was 20oC above the temperature that the tape measure was
designed for? The dimensions of the land do not change. (linear
expansivity for steel is 12×10-6/K). [3]

i. Calculate the magnitude of impulse that acts

force is applied. Assume friction is
negligible, calculate the mass of trolley. [2]
iii. Explain why trolley continues to move at constant velocity after the

21. a. In a report of an experiment to measure the specific latent heat of
vaporisation of water, a student wrote the following.
“Steam at 100 oC was added to cold water in a calorimeter.
When the steam had condensed, measurements were taken.
The specific latent heat of vaporisation of water was then calculated.”
