COMMON USED INSTRUMENTS
Jenelyn A. Ojoylan, RN, MN
KELLY FORCEPS CURVE
Kelly Hemostatic Forceps
are primarily used for
clamping large blood
vessels or manipulating
heavy tissue. They may
also be used for soft
tissue dissection.
KELLY STRAIGHT
Kelly Hemostatic Forceps
with a serrated blunt tip is
an essential component for
any tactical medical kit to
clamp large blood vessels,
manipulate heavy tissue,
and dissect soft tissue.
ALLIS
With sharp Tooth, it’s used and
designed to grasp and hold
heavy tissue, organs, skin,
fascia tissue, soft tissues like
bowel and breast tissue. also
used in the clamp and hold
operating materials such as
tubes and drapes
BOBCOCK
It is less traumatic due to
their wider and rounded
edges. mostly used in
laparotomy for grasping
tube-like organs or
structures like ureters,
intestine, appendices, and
other delicate tissue.
MIXTERS
Mixter Dissecting and Ligature Forceps is
a specialized device that surgeons in
multiple areas use to grasp and statically
hold soft tissues, locally stop the blood
flow and perform blunt dissection.
A right angle is used to clamp hard-to-
reach vessels and to place sutures
around the vessel. The right angle with a
suture attached is called a “tie on a
passer”.
NEEDLE HOLDER
is a surgical instrument similar to a
hemostat, used by doctors and
surgeons to hold and push a
suturing needle when performing
wound closure, ligation and other
surgical procedures that require re-
anastomosis. A needle holder is
used to grasp/hold and guide the
needle when suturing.
OVUM FORCEP
Ovum Forceps are used to grasp, hold,
manipulate and remove tissue from inside
the uterus including the ovum and
placenta. Ovum forceps are used during
procedures such as caesarean section.
Sponge forceps are mostly used in the
surgical procedure to create a surgical site
using a sponge to paint betadine or spirit.
Another use of sponge forceps is to hold
the hard surface and to hold and retract
the cervix.
Tooth forceps/ Thumb forceps-
Tissue forceps are used in
surgical procedures for grasping
tissue. Often, the tips have
"teeth" to securely hold a tissue.
Typically tissue forceps are
designed to minimize damage to
biological tissue. These forceps
are used for delicate tissue
handling and traction during a
procedure.
ARMY NAVY
used to retract shallow
or superficial incisions.
Other names: USA,
US Army
RICHARDSONS
This retractor is
used to retract
deep abdominal or
chest incisions.
Blade Holder
Blade handle to use for
deep cutting with a blade
no. 10, 11, 12, 15, etc.
Different types of surgical
blades/knives with their
number for cutting
incision and excision.
Blades
surgical blade/
knife of all sizes.
Mayo Scissors Straight
used for cutting
suture thread,
bandage, and
gauze piece.
Mayo Scissors Curve
used to cut heavy
tissue tough
structures like skin,
fascia, muscle, etc.
Metzenbaum
used to cut fine
structures like vessels,
tendons, and other
soft tissue.
Towel Clip
This Surgical
Instrument is used to
hold and grasp towels
and drapes, to
maintain a sterile field
during surgery or any
invasive procedure.
DeBakey
It is atraumatic tissue
forceps, used for
delicate tissue,
particularly in
cardiovascular surgery
to avoid tissue damage
during manipulation.
Adsons Forcep
Nontoothed used to
grasp the delicate
tissue. Or with teeth
used to grasp the
skin.
Kocher forceps
this Surgical Instrument is
used in surgical procedures
and other bleeding
conditions to control
bleeding by application of a
hemostatic clip. mostly used
in vascular surgeries.
Weitlaner Retractor
Which has two
pointed ends, it is
used to retract
small incision.
Balfour with bladder blade Retractor
Surgical Instrument
It’s used to
retract wound edges
during deep abdominal
procedures.
Cat’s Paw Retractor
It has two ends, one side
single right-angled blade
and the cat’s claw-
shaped blade on the
other side. it’s mostly
used in hard skin areas
surgery like hand and
foot.
