Pulse polio
Pulse Polio is an immunisation campaign
established by the government of India to
eliminate poliomyelitis in India by vaccinating
all children under the age of fiveyears
against the polio virus.
Milestones in pulse polio immunisation
campaign
1972: Vaccination against polio started with EPI
1985: UIP was launched to cover all the districts of country
1995: Global Polio Eradication Initiative of WHO (1988)
2010: number of reported cases of polio declined
2011: The last reported case of wild polio in India were in West Bengal and
Gujarat on 13 Jan 2011
2014: On 27 March 2014 the WHO declared India a polio free country.

Period of communicability 10 paralysis

Polio vaccine
All IPV/OPV immunised children should
receive OPV on all “Pulse Polio” days till 5
years of age.
IPV is preferred vaccine , if not available or
feasible, 3 doses of OPV are offered at 6-
10-14 weeks.
Aims
The pulse polio initiative was started with an objective of achieving hundred
coverage under oral polio vaccine.

Replacement of wild poliovirus in the community.


Intensified pulse polio immunisation program.
All children upto 5 years should be vaccinated.
There should be 3 zones-
low burden, middle burden, high burden.
Wild poliovirus transmission is limited to a focal area
To interrupt transmission of wild polio virus as soon as possible.

Introduction
Chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
It usually affects the skin and peripheral nerves.
Long incubation period generally 5-7 years.
Classified as paucibacillary or multibacillary.

1983: lauched NLEP and introduced MDT for treatment
1991: WHO declaration to eliminate leprosy at global
level by 2000.
