The Importance of Tropical Rainforests
A rainforest (1) defined as a forest which receives between 250 and 450 centimetres of rain
each year. Tropical rainforests are rainforests which (2) located close to the equator. But
why (3) people talk so much about saving the rainforests? Last year I visited Brazil and while
I (4) staying there I discovered why.
Although tropical rainforests only cover about 7% of the Earth’s land surface, 50% of all species (5)
found in them. Did you know that about a quarter of today’s natural medicines (6) discovered here?
Rainforests are also important because they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Rainforests
(7) sometimes called the ‘lungs’ of the Earth because they produce much of the oxygen that humans
need to survive. Also, because a large part of global warming (8) caused by carbon dioxide,
rainforests help reduce climate change.
Even though people know about the importance of the rainforests, they are still (9) destroyed for
their wood and also to make space for farms. If you want to help, try not to waste wood or paper and support any
action group which has (10) created in your area to put pressure on companies that destroy
rainforests.

‘Everybody should have a pet.’ Do you agree?
‘People should stop using palm oil.’
(1) you agree?
I believe that everybody should stop using
palm oil. The (2)
reason is that the production of palm oil
causes loss of habitat through deforestation,
and this can lead to animals becoming
endangered or extinct.
(3) reason is that
although palm oil is cheaper than other
vegetable oils, the way it’s produced is very
harmful to the environment, and I don’t think
people would mind paying a little more if they
realised they were saving animals from
extinction.
(4) , there are
plenty of alternatives to palm oil which don’t
harm the environment.
(5) conclude, I
would say that if we stop using palm oil, we
greatly reduce the risk of animals such as
the orangutan becoming extinct.
