COs Assignment Details Marks
CO 1.1 Ten coins are thrown simultaneously. Find the probability of 10 Marks
2 getting at least seven heads.
1.2 If an event has a probability of 0.7, what is the probability of its complement?
1.3 What is the sum of probabilities of all possible outcomes in a sample space?
1.4 What is the probability of drawing a red ball from a bag containing 3 red and 5
blue balls?
2. The probability that a man aged 60 will live to be 70 is 0.65. What
is the probability that out of 10 men aged 60 now, at least 7 would
live to be 70?
3. A student obtained the following answer to a certain problem
given to him. Mean = 2.4, variance = 3.2 for a binomial distribution.
Comment on the result.
CO 4. The number of telephone calls arriving on an internal switch board 10 Marks
2 of an office is 90 per hour. Find the probability that at the most 1 to
3 calls in a minute on the board arrive.
5. In a certain factory turning out razor blades, there is a small
chance of 0.002 for any blade to be defective. The blades supplied in
packets of 10. Calculate the approximate number of packets
containing no defectives, one defective and two defective blades in a
consignment of 10, 000 packets.
6. If the variance of a Poisson distribution is 2, find the probabilities
for r = 1, 2, 3, 4 from the recurrence relation of the poisson
distribution. Also find P(X>=4).
CO 7. In a normal distribution 31% of items are under 45 and 8% are 10 Marks
2 over 64. Find the mean and standard deviation of the distribution.
8. A sample of 100 dry battery cells is tested to find the length of life

produced the following results: mean = 12 hours and standard
deviation = 3 hours
Assuming the data to be normally distributed, what percentage of
battery cells are expected to have life: (a) more than 15 hours (b)
less than 6 hours and (c) between 10 and 14 hours.
9. The customer accounts of certain department store have an
average balance of Rs. 120 and a standard deviation of Rs. 40.
Assuming that the account balances are normally distributed, find:
(a) What proportion of the account is over Rs. 150 (b) What
proportion of account is between Rs. 100 and Rs. 150 and (c) What
proportion of account is between Rs. 60 and Rs. 90?
10. Suppose 10 percent of probability for a normal distribution is
below 25 and 5 percent above 90, what are the values of mean and
standard deviation.
CO 11. A power supply unit for a computer component is assumed to 10 Marks
2 follow an exponential distribution with a mean life of 1200 hours.
What is the probability that the component will (a) fall in the first
300 hours? (b) survive more than 1500 hours (c) last between 1200
hours and 1500 hours?
12. The sales tax, X, of a shopkeeper has an exponential distribution
with p.d.f
If sales tax is levied at the rate of 5% what is the probability that his
sales exceed Rs. 10,000?
13. The daily consumption of milk in a city, in excess of 20, 000
litres, is approximately distributed as a gamma variate with
parameters alpha = 1/10000 and lambda = 2. The city has a daily
stock of 30, 000 litres. What is the probability that the stock is
insufficient on a particular day?
14. A call center receives an average of 3 calls per minute.
Assuming that the number of calls follows a Poisson distribution,
a) Find the probability that exactly 2 calls are received in a given minute.
b) Find the probability that more than 3 calls are received in a minute.
c) Compute the expected number and variance of calls per minute.
