3. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.
Mr Chibwe and his two sons, Makumba and Kadam’manja lived on a farm. Mr Chibwe
wanted his sons to learn the importance of hard work. Every morning Makumba and
Kadammanja woke up very early to milk their two cows. After milking the cows, they would
have breakfast before going to school.
On weekends, the father would divide the farm work equally between his sons. Makumba
always helped but Kadam’manja was lazy. Makumba often complained of one ache or
another. His father was, however, very patient with him. Makumba was not happy, but
showed his brother kindness. Makumba kept on encouraging him to work hard and always
finished his brother’s uncompleted chores. At school, Kadam’manja was often given
punishments for not writing in class.

One day, Kadam’manja decided to drop out of school and go to town and look for a job
because he felt that life at the farm was boring. Mr Chibwe was upset with Kadam’manja’s
decision but allowed him to go.
Makumba was angry,” why do you always let him do what he wants?” he asked his father.
Don’t let him go! We need him here to finish his school and help us with the work,” pleaded
Makumba.

Yes, we do,” admitted his father, but there is no point in making him stay . He has no interest
in school neither in farm work.
Kadam’manja went to town and tried to find some work. He imagined himself getting a well
paying easy job, but that was not possible. He met alot of people who promised to give him
work but they never did. The offices he visited wanted someone with better education
qualifications. Kadam’manja did not know what to do. He, therefore, started begging in the
streets.
Life became so hard for Kadam’manja that he thought of going back home. Cold and hungry,
he gathered his torn clothes and began the walk home.
